Lesson 6 – Yasa

Lecon 6 – Yasa

Nghe vậy, không chút do dự, Gia Xá lập tức lội qua sông.

One night, after the Buddha had attained enlightenment, a young man named Yasa, the son of a wealthy household, came to look for him.

The young man has just reached the bank of a river, when he saw the Buddha sitting under a tree on the other side. Beneath the moonlight, Buddha’s handsome, graceful body and noble demeanor were more striking than ever. Yasa was filled with admiration for him, and longed to come nearer to the Buddha. But he was afraid to cross the river. Sensing Yasa’s fear, the Buddha spoke, reassuring and encouraging the young man: “Have Faith, and you are bound to succeed. Do not be afraid!”

On hearing these words, without a moment of hesitation, Yasa jumped into the river and swam across. The Buddha then explained to him the teachings of Buddhism. The young man listen intently and decided there and then to follow the Buddha and learn his teachings.

Later, Yasa’s father, Thien Giac, also asked to become a disciple of the Buddha. The two men were amongst the very first Buddhist lay-followers.
