Lesson 10 – The garden of Jetavana

In the Buddha’s time, there lived in India a rich merchant who was renowned for his generosity and kindness. He always look after the sick and helped poor and lonely people. The merchant’s name was Anathapindaka, which means the man who helps the lonely.

Anathapindaka wanted to buy some land and build a large dwelling to accommodate the Buddha and his monks. He had found the ideal spot – a pleasure garden belonging to Prince Jeta. But Prince Jeta refused to sell the land.

The rich merchant suddenly had a marvelous idea – he sent cart loads of gold coins to the park, and had the coins spread all over the land like a carpet, leaving out only the trees. Then he offered to buy  the park with as many coins as covered the land. Prince Jeta was so moved by Anathapindaka’s devotion to the Buddha and his followers that he not only accepted to sell the park, but offered all the trees on his land as a gift.

This place henceforth became known as the Jetavana monastery in memory of the two kind benefactors who contributed to the foundation of one of the main centers of Buddhism in the land of Sravasti.
