Lesson 7 – Founding the Triple Jewel

Once he had become fully enlightened, Buddha began to spread his teachings (the Dharma) to others.

First of all, near a place called the Deer Park, the Buddha met the five ministers who had lived with him as monks in the forest. The five men immediately saw something special in the Buddha’s majestic, serene air, and they were filled with respect. They bowed down before the Buddha and asked him to teach them the truth.

The Buddha taught the five men how to avoid harming others, to help people and do good…They were overjoyed and pledged to become monks to study and practice the Buddha’s teachings. Thereafter, the five monks travelled all over India with the Buddha to spread his teachings to the people.

Thus, these three precious elements – the Buddha, his teachings (the Dharma) and his disciples (the Sangha or Order of Monks) were united as one. From then on, they became known as the “Triple Jewel”.
