Lesson 8 – The Deer Park

According to ancient stories, there was in India a large woodland, full of flowers and trees where deer used to gather and play.

One day, a King came to hunt in the woodland with a troop of soldier. A mother deer was badly wounded by their arrows, but she managed to drag herself away and escape. The hunters chased after her, and finally found the doe hidden in the deep grass, giving milk to her baby fawn.

The mother struggled to stay alive until the little fawn had sucked his fill, but finally, unable to bear the agony caused by her wounds, she fell dead on the spot. Before dying, she made an ultimate effort to look at her baby for the very last time. Her soft eyes brimming with tears…

The King was deeply moved by the mother deer’s love. He picked the fawn up and tenderly in his arms, and vowed: “I shall look after you in your mother’s place, and from this day on, I promise never to go hunting again.”

After that, the place became known as the “Deer Park.”
