Chúc Đại Hội thành công viên mãn, kính chúc Chư Tôn Thiền Đức, Tăng Ni, quý vị quan khách, quý vị đại biểu và toàn thể đồng hương Phật tử thân tâm thường an lạc, vạn sự kiết tường, sớm thành đạo quả Bồ đề.

Trân trọng đa tạ và kính chào quý Ngài cùng liệt quý vị.

FIFTH GENERAL CONGRESS OPENING ADDRESS

by The Most Venerable Thích Như Huệ, Congregation President.

Homage to the Śākyamuni Buddha

– Most Venerable, Venerable, and Reverend Members of the Sangha

– Honoured Guests

– Ms Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, representing the Prime Minister Tony Abbott

– Representatives of Australian Government organisations

– Federal President of the Vietnamese Community

– Representatives of Vietnamese community associations and organisations

– Fellow Buddhists

On this the opening day of the Fifth General Congress of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation, Australia–New Zealand, in this ceremonial atmosphere filled with fervour and with the participation of so many Sangha members and honoured guests, on behalf of the Congregation allow me to welcome you all and to express our sincerest gratitude for your attendance.

Sangha Members, Honoured Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Flower Garland Sutra teaches: All phenomena are constructions of the mind, as well as of conditioning, and so are interdependent: if this exists then that exists, if this is not then that is not, if this arises then that arises, if this is extinguished then that is extinguished. If time exists then the smallest of things exists, if time does not exist even this whole world cannot exist. Therefore no independent phenomenon can exist of itself; from the smallest speck of dust to a huge world in the cosmos, everything has a marvellous intimate relationship with each other that we must experience and investigate to be able to fully understand.

In the Bequest Sutra, the Buddha taught: You should think of an impermanent fire which is consuming existence, you need early to vow to achieve self–release, to save others, otherwise your karma would lead you to fall into evil ways so that this present life would be a useless waste. Having contemplated the Buddha’s precious teaching we saw that it was as if we were living in a house of fire, in a discordant world full of conflict, and it was as a result of this that the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation, Australia–New Zealand, came into being with the aspiration to transform the conflict and bring strength for the Vietnamese Sangha to survive in Australia to propagate the Dharma and bring sensitive benefit in a period of much change and challenge. Thanks to all members of the Sangha being insightful and united, we have overcome the divisive plots illogically aimed at disrupting our Congregation’s path of propagating the Dharma. As of today we have had four terms of office for a total of more than 16 years; 16 years of trial, adversity, vicissitude and misery, but the Congregation endures and is strong and stable, bringing to our fellow Buddhists a feeling of trust so that they may study and practise their religion with peace of mind. From five temples the number has increased to over fifty institutions with hundreds of monks and nuns and hundreds of thousands of Buddhists active at the many temples throughout Australia.

The Sangha is the strength for the Dharma to survive, its members are the Tathāgata’s messengers, having resolved to follow the Middle Way, the path discovered by the Lord Buddha who followed it living in harmony and in accord with the conditions. By being in harmony and in accord with the conditions, our Congregation has thrived and developed; by being in harmony and accord, every member of the Congregation has made daily progress, knowing to show respect for all, knowing mutual respect, how to instruct, to forgive, and to harmonise with one another, how to empathise with one another to be united in purpose and be able to accept that if one wants to improve one’s religious practice then one must examine one’s own consciousness, rid oneself of egoistic attachment and transform one’s own karmic force before there can be any hope of enlightenment and liberation.

As founding members we were determined to maintain the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation in Australia until today and put into effect many important Buddhist activities. We organised Winter Retreats, annual Buddhist Studies courses, Patriarch Memorial Services, and proposed the establishment of an Intercontinental Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation; we organised services for the 50th anniversary of Bodhisattva Thích Quảng Đức’s self-immolation to protect the people and the Buddha Dharma during the historically dangerous and shocking turn of events in 1963; to maintain the Congregation’s legal status we organised four solemn General Congresses with memorial services of gratitude for the Martyrs, intellectuals, world leaders, servicemen of the Republic of Vietnam, and Vietnamese Buddhists who gave their lives that Vietnamese Buddhism may continue to survive; and we conducted relief activities at times of natural disasters such as storms, floods, earthquakes and bushfires in Australia, Japan, and Vietnam. All activities achieved great success.

Our Congregation has been lauded by Congregations on other continents. There have been many notable successes, but we have not been able to avoid disruption, slanders and libels by outsiders, and the ‘hindrances of Māra,’ but as the Samādhiratnarāja Śāstra teaches: To build virtue do not pray that you will not be hindered, because if you are not hindered your resolve will not be strong and firm… It must not be due to others’ plaudits that one should be proud or conceited, so also it must not be due to others’ lying slanders and libels that one abandons one’s religion, or that only our own thought, words and actions should be the arbiter for all that we do.

For 30 years in Vietnam I served the Congregation of the Sangha, the Central Vietnam Buddhist Federation, as well as the national Vietnamese Unified Buddhist Congregation, and then having arrived here I have been intimately connected with members of the Sangha in Australia as well as in other countries for another 30 years. Much merit has accumulated serving the Congregation and our religion; on one hand it was the humanitarian Government and people of Australia who welcomed the Vietnamese to settle here and to receive equal rights, and with them came our Buddhist religion; on the other hand it is thanks to the mutual support of fellow Buddhists whose initiative can be seen in the success shown today. With the Three Jewels as witness, I ask that this merit be passed to favour and benefit all sentient beings of this dharma realm. For myself, I ask that this General Congress select another president to replace me and continue the management of the Congregation. The new president must be someone of virtue and ability, with religious consciousness and good health to carry on the work of the Congregation effectively, and continue to propagate the Dharma to the benefit of all. Because ‘Existence is impermanent, the four truths are suffering and its extinguishment, the five agregates are without substance, birth and death are indeterminate,’ if one does not know when to stop, then the Congregation’s activities may well come to a standstill, I am today therefore resolved to stop and use my remaining time for religious practice to save my energy for the day when I return to wait upon the Buddha.

I believe that with your abilities you have sufficient energy together with good health and much talent, so you are capable of handling the Congregation’s ship and continue to meet every challenge, every hardship, to reach the shore of joy and liberation. I volunteer myself to stand beside you, to support you when some task requires it.

Sangha Members, Honoured Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:

This General Congress, taking place with such ceremony and solemnity, is thanks to the efforts of the Abbot, the Venerable Thera Thích Tâm Phương, the Prior, Thích Nguyên Tạng, and the laity of the Quảng Đức Temple who have readily made available their facilities, energy and time to allow the Congregation to have its congress here this year. So on behalf of the Congregation let me offer you all our sincerest gratitude and commendations of the great merit of our Congregation’s much talented Thera. (A big round of applause please.)

We are very much obliged to the Most Venerable Mahā–Theras for their presence which contributes so much to the freshness and brightness of this occasion. We wish to commend the Sangha and laity of the Organising, Catering and Transport Committees of the Quảng Đức Monastery and other Melbourne temples who are working to their utmost to ensure the success of this General Congress.

Let me wish this General Congress every success. Members of the Sangha, honoured guests, delegates, and my fellow Buddhists, may you have peace, prosperity and good fortune, and may you soon attain enlightenment.

Many thanks and welcome to you all.

Praise be to the Bodhisattva Principle of Happiness and Joy.

Śramaṇa Thích Như Huệ
