Than_Mau_HT_Minh_Tam (7)

Yêu cầu can thiệp vào tự do nhân quyền và tự do tôn giáo tại Việt Nam.

The autumn wind is back,
but you, revered Master, where are you ?

Life and Death : the most critical issues. Lightning impermanence…

Yes, Master. You did realize these too most critical issues in this life. You "came" and then serenely "went". You demonstrated the truth of impermanence and how swiftly it can strike, and let people gasp "oh ! it's all too sudden !".

Your passing was so swift, so peaceful, that thinking of your pending tasks, we all thought that you would not be able to let them go. In reality, you were very detached. Feeling that you were no match for the the ferocious "four elements", you calmly said "Be that as it may, they are common tasks, someone else will take them over!"

These words were said in the morning of the 2013 August 8th, about 4 hours before you lightly breathed your last breath, taking leave of everybody. What words can I use to describe your mind but "embracing the unlimited space and encompassing realms as numerous as grains of sand" ?

Thinking back about that moment, I only want to prostate again and again in front of you framed picture, but how many prostrations are enough to praise your aspiration and virtue ? Even if these prostrations were only formality, but this formality stems from the depth of my admiration. What you said proved that even at the last moment of your life, you were only concerned about the common tasks, the Buddhist Congregation and the Sangha community, not knowing that at that moment, your life were hanging only by a thread.

Listening to your laboured breathings, I asked "Master, are you very much in pain ?" and you only answered "…tired…" and then closed your eyes tightly, lost in your thoughts and difficult breathing. May be, being so used to see you in this state because of your notorious poor health, I was not frighten nor confused, but silently prayed for you, invoking Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva and Amitabha Buddha, so that you can be "contented according to the causal conditions…". I was greatly (and only) comforted knowing that at that very moment, your followers had come together at the Khánh Anh temple to pray and to recite the Sutras. Those who attended the summer Seminar at Liên Hoa Đạo Tràng in the Khuông Việt temple also came together to pray and recite the Sutras. And I, standing at your bedside, was also single-minded praying. While your followers and disciples were praying together, you quietly took your last breath, leaving us, saying nothing. But this very quiet last breath was a wordless farewell, because unsaid words are infinite words…

Master, since you departed for the Amitabha Buddha's Western Land, I am still grieving for you and miss you dreadfully every day, because your image won't be any longer that of a living, active man but an immobile picture on the altar. However, sometimes I cannot help but chuckle "His coming and going were so carefree !".

The story of the Zen Master Bang Long An's family who died so calmly came to my mind when eventually you quietly took you last breath, so quietly that, standing close to you, I was not even aware that you just left us forever.

In olden times, I often pleaded with you :

- Please Master, never leave me behind ! Let me go ahead to clear the way for you ! Is it not said in the Novice's Rules that when accompanying his Master, if they have to ford a stream, the disciple must precede the Master and fathom the depth of the water with a stick, and then slowly guide the Master over ?

You would invariably answer : "Phooey ! Nonsense ! Who must not die at an old age and when crippled by illness ? Don't stand there twaddling ! Go back to your work !"

I said so because your undertakings were so grand, your vows so vast, and there were so many people leaning upon you, depending on you. Then you would need much more time to be omnipresent, according to their wish as it is said in the Universal Gate Sutra, the sutra that you used to recite at 3 PM every day at the Khánh Anh temple, in Bagneux… I used to accompany you during these sutra reciting sessions, and this word "omnipresent" used to impress me… It seemed to me that your life had been closely linked to this word.

Because I knew that you wished to be omnipresent, modelled on Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva, I very wholeheartedly vowed to let you have many years of my life, although I know that each person has his own fate and his own span of life, but I still prayed that you would live to one hundred years to allow people to lean on you, as you never refused to stretch out your hands when people need you, call you, appeal to you and expect from you…

I used to observe you closely and silently, and sometimes I ventured to suggest :

- Master, I think that this task should be done like this, why you did it like that ?

You thoughtfully remained silent, then answered :

- I have my way of doing things. Get back to your work, stop talking nonsense or I shall chide you !

Many times, narrow-minded and shallow-brained, I kept asking you the same question and your always gave me the same answer. Gradually, my narrow and shallow mindset was eventually enlightened by the outcome of the works carried out in your own way. I would complain :

- So you had your reasons to do that way, but why don't you explain it openly for me to understand, instead of leaving me with my misgivings ?

Then your smile was slightly smug, your nose slightly turned up :"I told you, what is not clear now will slowly clear up, but you never listen ! You are such an ignorant lot !"

My revered Master !

When I was just tonsured, you minutely taught me the monastic etiquettes and manners (sekhiya rules, Quy Sơn Cảnh Sách), while the Masters Nhất Chân and Thiện Huệ taught the Novices rules (Sammukha Vinaya). I still remember very clearly, you used to quote "Giving too lenient an education is the teacher's fault". Once I asked "what about the student ?", you said :"He is also at fault. The teacher is for not having wholeheartedly taught the student, and the student for his insubordination and for causing his teacher's headaches ! They were very serious offenses ! Who is the Master who does not want to train his disciple into a valuable Dharma tool, but if the disciple is not conscious of this and get angry or take offense, then… then… See it for yourself, study diligently the Vinaya… You must put your study into practice… and practice also means self cultivation…"

Then you went on telling stories about your community life in the Hai Duc Buddhist College in Nha Trang before you left for Japan, where the monastics must undergo a very strict disciple.

- You must live in harmony with the community, where each and every action in the temple functions at the pace of the sound of the gong.

At the beginning of my monastic life, I used to make the same blunder : sometimes, wanted to complete a task at hand and in spite of the gong, I arrived late at the dining hall to take my meal with everybody. Late in the evening, during our lessons, you alluded to it :

- Not living according to the schedule of a community reveals a striking lack of respect for it. Doing so, one would lose one's blessings, for it is an offense. Yes, yes, an offense ! Is it normal for the disciple stroll in when the master is already at the table ? And who has not task to complete ? Even me, I have to show respect to the masses, let alone you !

Then you went on telling us about your life in the Nha Trang's Buddhist college as example. "To live according to the sound of the gong" was your favourite saying…Had you not been the chief supervisor in this college ?

Oh my Master, how many times I repented, how many times I did penance, but veiled by ignorance, I kept commit the same blunder. Each time, I had to don my robe to bow in front of you to show repentance, and you always remained silent before saying :

- If you are aware about your wrongdoing, don't do it again. Don't make me reprimand you all the time, it's very bad for your blessings.

How time flies ! 30 years already went by. 30 years - during which I practiced, cultivated my mind, repented and progressed – had passed like a flash.

Let us go back to your life and your vows.

When we just have been ordained, the activities in the temple were still relatively simple. You spent a lot of time to educate, to take care of us, your first group of disciples. You painstakingly taught us and nurtured us with the story of your life : how you lived when just tonsured in the village temple, your studies, your activities in the Buddhist College Hai Duc in Nha Trang, the time you were studying abroad, and your ideal for serving the Triple Jewels. You told us so many stories.

"I left home to enter monastic life when still very young, at 11. In fact, I "ran away" from home to follow my Master, a monk living in the village and I was very disinclined to study.

A little older, I knew better and wanted to study. I asked my Master's permission to go to the Buddhist College in town but he did not acquiesce to my request. I submitted it again and again, to no avail. Then I had no choice than to "run away" again. Later on, my master relented, I went back to my temple to see him, then returned to the college. My master called me back a few times, wanted to hand the temple over to me in order to keep me in the village. But because of my vow "to open new horizons in order spread the Buddhism", I stayed at the Buddhist college at Nha Trang and was tutored by the late Fourth Patriarch Thích Huyền Quang…"

Thereby, seeing your aptitude and commitment to serving Buddhism and the Vietnamese people, the senior Venerables entrusted you with important missions. In 1963, the Dharma upheaval was a very critical period.

Once, your temple was searched by the police, to discover letters or documents related to the "altars on the streets" movement. You were so anxious, not knowing where to hide them. In previous times, you rolled them and bound them carefully together then hided them in a well, but they were still found out and taken away. This time, frightened out of your wit, you rolled them up and, and kept them in your hands while receiving the searching agents. During all that time, you silently and ceaselessly prayed and called the compassionate, the merciful Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva for help… and you were not molested and out of danger. Later on, when the police left the temple, you suddenly realized that the roll of the incriminated document were still in your hands. You let your breath out with a relieved "Homage to compassionate, to merciful Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva !", then you donned your ceremonial monastic robe to recite the Universal Gate sutra to express gratitude !

During your whole monastic life, you had an unrelenting faith in Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva. May be that is why every afternoon, at 3 PM., you always recite this same sutra ? You even used the first of Her 12 vows to bestow Dharma names on us : Quảng Phát Hoằng Thệ Nguyện (to raise the immeasurable vows), and only added the prefix "Tịnh" (pure) to form a name. Being the youngest, mine was the last one, Tịnh Nguyện (Pure Vows).

Then there was the event of the Most Venerable Thích Quảng Đức's self immolation.

"At that moment, you said, many persons volunteered to perform self immolation but not everyone was approved to do so. The senior Venerables had many covert meetings in order to ratify the candidate's name, but this name was to be kept secret until the last moment. Once again, the Buddhist temples were combed and raids by the government. In some temples, the monks were even rounded up and interrogated. As soon as I was informed of this, I took the important letters and put them in the Lotus Sutra (Saddharma Pundarīka Sūtra) at the Universal Gate chapter and left the sutra on the altar. All the sutras were shook, all the candlestick and censers were turned over, only the Lotus sutra was left untouched. Once again we were saved by the miraculous power of the greatly compassionate, greatly merciful Bodhisattva."

Sponsored and trusted by the Most Venerable Từ Quang, you became a Dharma lecturer at Phú Yên and teacher at the Bồ Đề secondary school in Tuy Hòa. Once you were sent to a place to deliver a Dharma lecture, but le locals were somewhat choosy : they only welcomed senior monks' lecture. At that time you were only a novice monk, but the Most Venerable Từ Quang decided that you must go. Arriving there, the Most Venerable himself also came to be the witness and summoned the other monks to attend your lecture. He even said "The novice monk gives lecture, the Venerables listen".

From time to time, when teaching us, you would encourage us :"See ? You must make further efforts to study ! At my time, the Venerables had to strive so hard to learn and to work, but nowadays, you monks are so sluggish ! I wonder what will become of you !"

During the years 1962 to 1967, you were a Dharma lecturer, principal of the Bồ Đề secondary school, and the substitute teacher in at the schools in Bình Định when it was necessary. You encountered also not a few problems with the government then, therefore the Most Venerable Từ Quang urged you to temporarily go to Japan first for broader perspective, and secondly to avoid being watched. "Keep quiet a moment then come back to help me", He said. You obediently made preparations to go to Japan.

In 1967, in Japan, you had to struggle with very hard living conditions, with a very small sum of money that you brought with you. A not less small pittances were allocated to you from Vietnam, and was sent to you monthly by a helpful friend. At the beginning, you received it regularly but very much less so afterward : there were months when you received nothing.

To pay the tuition and to cover your daily basic necessities, you had to deliver Uddon soups by bike two hours per day. You told us about this in a comic-tragic way :

- I was not used to guiding bike with one hand and carrying a bowl of soup with the other. The days out of luck, one of the bowl would spilled and the wages for those two hours' work would be then cut by half !

Your study became much more time consuming. You stopped delivering soups to work in some building activities to reduce your daily working time : instead of two hours per day, you only had to work three hours every two days, twice a week. It was an arduous and hard job, but it allowed you more time to study.

Once I saw a picture of you dressed in working clothes, lying cross legged on the floor. I commented "Wow ! how lucky you are to have time for a siesta !".

"Lucky indeed !" You said. "I stepped on a nail but could not afford to go to the hospital. Its stinging pain forced me to lay down and prevented me from working… and from being paid by the same occasion !"

You loved cameras and photography. You always busied yourself with the photography techniques and were very happy with your pictures taken professionally with right light, right Isio, right focus when the setting and the subject yielded a good photograph. You even taught me those techniques to take pictures at different events and post them in our Khánh Anh monthly magazine. At that time, the autofocus cameras were still exceptional and expensive.

During the years 1968-1973, you were appointed President of the Buddhist Vietnamese Chapter in Japan, because little by little, the number of monks coming to study in Japan were increasing and you gathered together to found a Vietnamese Buddhist Association, run and managed from Vietnam. In spring 1973, you were instructed by the late Fourth Patriarch Thích Huyền Quang to go to Paris in order to work with the Venerable Thích Nhất Hạnh, but you went back to Japan because the collaboration was rather shaky.

At the beginning of 1974, you went back to France and had a hard time to find a room to rent, and ended up to share one with a few Theravada monks living in Paris at that time. You said :"The room was so cramped, just large enough for 5 or 6 of us to lay down and to turn, every belongings had to be momentarily put outside in the corridor".

Afterward, you founded a "Khánh Anh Prayer Hall" in a 2-rooms apartment : the sleeping room was transformed into the Buddha main hall, and the bath room into your sleeping room with a plank fixed across the bath tub. When there were about 10 persons in the Buddha hall, you could withdraw in your "quarters" to rest when tired.

Until 1977, causes and conditions were sufficiently converged, accompanied by some devotees you visited and eventually acquired a property at 14 rue Henri Barbusse, 92220 Bagneux (which later became the Khánh Anh Temple). These Buddhist devotees were rather few in number because at that time there was almost no refugee in France. Most of them were former overseas students who stayed on after the 1975 April 30th upheaval. As for the "Buddhist devotees" we must add that they were neophytes !

You were to endure untold trials and tribulations to carry through this acquisition. Was this why later on, you used to say : "My life is rarely easy and smooth. Obstacles are common, but smoothness is extraordinary occurrences indeed ! I never expect that things would be uneventful, on the contrary I always anticipate difficulties and challenges. You must take this as a lesson…"

After a period of monastic activities, causes and conditions came together again to allow you to celebrate, on 1979 February 19th, the Stone laying ceremony of the Buddha main hall on the premises of the Khánh Anh temple.

The beginning of the 1980's marked our arrival !

In 1983, we, a group of young people, used to go to the temple on the week-ends or when there was no school. In spite of being squeezed because there was not much room, we came with our sleeping bags and scattered everywhere : in the dining hall bellow, in the Buddha Hall upstairs, and even in the kitchen sometimes ! That summer, we were 10 or 15 (or even 20) to stay in the temple, and at the end of the day, divided into 2 or 3 groups, we would sit around you, the three resident Masters, to listen to story telling. Each one of you had your kind of stories, all of them so fascinating that some of us liked to commute between groups every now and then. You, my Master, would tell stories that currently happened in the temple with so much humour and spirit, Master Nhất Chân told Zen stories and Master Thiện Huệ ghost stories. This last group was always the most boisterous and the noisiest one ! There were so much fun then !

Then tired of stories, we aspired for something else, and pleaded with you to teach us Buddhism and Chinese writing.

The first Buddhist lesson you taught us was the opening verses of the Shurangama Dharani. Then you taught us to ring bells and strike the wooden fish. Each morning, for you daily devotion, one of us must ring the bell and another must strike the wooden fish to accompany you. It was so funny !

For our first Chinese lesson, you chose the poem "Phong Kiều Dạ Bạc" (Trương Kế). You showed us stroke by stroke, insisting that the horizontal ones must be strait and the vertical ones upright. Then you joyfully marked our dictations. You were such a strict master ! Even if there was no mistake at all, you never gave us more than 9/10, and explained that "nothing is perfect". Was this also your way of living and your working guideline ? You always trained us in such a way that we never hope for entire satisfaction, never presumed that our expectations would be granted in full. At that time, I was so very frustrated, wondering why you never indulged us with a better mark, after all well deserved ? With the time, I realized that that was your "way of education". You trained us to have the virtue of Patience, of Acceptance. For that, I am forever in you debt, my revered Master !

Oh, but your teaching was always wonderful and I enjoyed it very much. I used to boast "The "Old man" is an excellent educator ! It's a pleasure to be taught by him !"

Gradually, being close to you through these Buddhist and Chinese lessons, assisting you in various activities and moreover being naturally prone to "commit myself", [it became normal that] I was at your side during the various hunger strikes, manifestations, seminars, wakeful nights… to fight for the Human rights, for the liberation of our Buddhist leaders still prisoners of the Vietnamese regime such as the Late Most Venerable Thích Huyền Quang, Most Venerable Thích Quảng Độ, Venerable Thích Tuệ Sỹ, Late Most Venerable Thích Nữ Trí Hải, Professor Lê Mạnh Thát. You strived to campain for the United Nations' intervention, and for the European countries, the United States and Australia to take in more "boat people" still waiting in the islands of many Southern Asian countries' refugee camps.

When I still was in Vietnam, I often went with my aunt to temples, playing with the novices, helping out and sometimes thinking of "leaving my home" (taking the robe). Far from the homeland, the old seeds began to sprout. With a few friends, after hefty debates, we went together to you for a formal request to be ordained, in order to live, to learn and to work close to you. You agreed but then left us "stew", until master Nhất Chân appealed to you for brother Chúc Nhuận's ordination. Brother Quảng Đạo took this opportunity to approach you with small steps… Taking this as the sign of the convergence of the necessary causes and conditions, you agreed on a date with Masters Nhất Chân and Thiện Huệ to celebrate our ordination.

You also communed with both masters "I fear that alone, I shan't be able to convert the followers. Now your help will put my mind at rest."

On the Saturday 1984 dec 29th, or the 8th day of the 12th lunar months in the year of the Rat, on the Bodhi day (Commemoration of the Bouddha's Enlightenment), in the main Buddha hall, you tonsured the 8 of us, assisted by the Masters Nhất Chân and Thiện Huệ.

We were tonsured under you and instructed by both masters Nhất Chân and Thiện Huệ as to the Buddhadharma, but every time that the Venerable Thích Như Điển and Thích Tánh Thiệt came to our temple, you used to ask them to teach us the sutra chanting rituals. In monastic environment, it is said that it takes 3 months to learn how to recite sutras, but 3 years to chant them. It was hard for us to learn to chant, but even harder for the master to teach this to us !

We had so much fun ! The main rituals were taught by you. You taught us very carefully : how to offer incense, to praise the Buddhas, to dedicate, to use the right tone to conduct the public in a sutra recitation sessions… You had us exercised when to stop to catch breath, when to raise voice or drop it "without breaking the intonation of the word". But you also saw to it that we learn more ritual practices with the other masters. When Venerable Như Điển taught us the Center of Vietnam's way, Venerable Tánh Thiệt the Ancient City's way, and you, you taught us the standard way according to the "book of liturgy Ritual prayers". We were completely at sixes and sevens, and only recently, in contact with many masters from Hue, did I begin to distinguish and understand more about the "Royal Palace's Ritual".

Because of this "family bond", whenever the Masters Như Điển and Tánh Thiệt called at the Khánh Anh temple, they would put our knowledge to the test. We did have the jitters but nonetheless very happy to know that they cared for us. Then the masters Quảng Hiền and Trí Minh frequently came to see us and were also very interested in our study. At that time, apart from very important ceremonies, the every day's activities in provinces were relatively simple, therefore these masters often came to see us.

But the Buddhist activities increased steadily. Our countrymen, refugees from Vietnam, were slowly settled down in a third country. As long as no monastic's presence was to be found in the neighboring European countries or in France's provinces, you would travelled unceasingly – every week-ends –, to Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway… and sometimes up to the northern Norway to visit them, the Buddhists who yearned for some spiritual food. Once arrived, oblivious of long journeys or of your tiredness, you would immediately begin your office : expounding the Dharma, comfort our countrymen who just settled in these countries. They still missed their homeland, their relatives and were still unfamiliar with their new environment.

At that time, we were so close to our fellow countrymen and Buddhist followers… As to me, my work was to display the Buddhist printed material (sutras and magazines), set up a makeshift altar for a prayer session. After the ceremony, I would take everybody's names and addresses so as to send them our Khánh Anh magazine later.

Our financial position was very modest. To go to so far a place, Master and disciples only disposed of a 4-horse power Renault 5, that kind of small truck without back seats, used to transport heavy goods. I would sit on a board put across the trunk to let room for printed materials and necessary objects to set an altar. At each sharp turn, the board would collapse and so would I. It would be put back again for me to resume my seat. After the ceremony, we would drive back to Khánh Anh temple. More often than not, we would arrive at the earliest at 9 or 10 PM. On Monday morning, we returned to our daily duties in a temple, and in the evening, to our lessons. Masters Nhất Chân and Thiện Huệ taught us once per week, and you twice. On Saturday, we would be on the road again. Sometimes, we proceeded like this four week-ends consecutively.

During our trips, to entertain the driver, you would bring along a battery power cassette player and a few cassette tapes of Duy Khánh, Khánh Ly, Thanh Tuyền, renown singers from our homeland. Those songs, produced prior to 1975, speaking of our beloved country during the raging war, relieved somehow our homesickness. But you also took these opportunities to explain to us – the driver and I – a few Vietnamese phrases from the songs in their literary and cultural contexts. Were you not one a teacher of Vietnamese literature ?

The food we brought with us would be invariably white rice, fried bean curd with chili and lemongrass, a cucumber, a bottle of Maggi sauce and a few bottles of spring water and that's it. As simple as that.

Masters Nhất Chân and Thiện Huệ also used go to far away places to, in turn, celebrate Buddhist services to relieve you. There were many week-ends when you and one of these masters were absent, the remaining one must conduct the weekly morning prayer service for the deceased and in the afternoon, give a Dharma teaching for the devotees.

At that time, master Nhất Chân was the spiritual guide of Norway and Strasbourg's Buddhists, and master Thiện Huệ would guide those in Netherland and Bordeaux. Slowly, the Masters in the refugee camps arrived to settle in Europe, and most of them knew each other. You then set out to put them in contact with the Buddhist associations in the neighboring towns, so that they could be invited to these places. In this way, your trips were less frequent and reduced only to important ceremonies.

In the middle of the 1980's, you were very distressed faced to the turmoil of our countrymen who left Vietnam to seek freedom overseas. You ceaselessly organized hunger strikes and manifestations in front of the United Nations headquarters in Switzerland, or in front of the Vietnamese Embassies in Paris or in other European capitals, in order to awaken the conscience of the international communities' leaders. You aimed at requiring their interventions in favor of the human and the religious rights in Vietnam, and at drawing their attention to the refugee camps in the South-East Asian countries. You also organized conferences on the issue of Human rights, wakeful nights to remember the situation in Vietnam, where there was no more freedom, no more democracy or human right but only injustice ; to think the the different refugee camps to share the sufferings, grief, bereavements of those hundreds of thousands people cut from their homeland and were desperate to be accepted in a new country. I was beside you during these moments. While working, I couldn't help feeling a deep admiration for you from the bottom of my heart. I was also one of these "boat people", who once was desperate for someone in the far away free Europe or America to care for me, to get concerned about me. The only difference is that I was fortunate enough to leave Vietnam earlier with my family and to settle earlier in France.

It was impossible to tell the sorrow, the loneliness, the yearning and the forlorn hope of those refugee in the islands of Asia… who almost gave up the dream of being free from their camps.

I felt so much empathy with the boat people that I threw myself into the work tirelessly. But you, you "hearkened" to the calls for help from the other shore of the ocean.

Regardless of hardships, you dedicated yourself to help them, using up your strength, having nothing more than your mind, your empty hands and your heart, just because their blood is red and their tears are salty like the myriad of other beings, and because they were floundering in the ocean of sorrow.

Once, while preparing files and documents for a manifestation to hand an Appeal Letter to the UNO, I asked you :

- Master, will us be able to go inside to hand the letter, or did we receive a confirmation that someone will step out to take it ?

You burst out laughing :

- We'll do what we must. If we can't go inside or if no one steps out to take the letter, then we'll send it by post. At least they'll know that we were here manifesting, and are aware of our request. Let's just go ahead, and take whatever comes out of it. Like our countrymen in the refugee camps, they just keep waiting and hoping, but don't know when they can get out of them.

What a great spirit of altruism !

I remember once I wanted to give up everything because you kept on organizing or calling upon people to organize hungry strikes, manifestations and wakeful nights… but to so little avail ! How not to discourage when one spend so much effort, do so much work to almost no result ? We received news then saying that the refugee camps were going to be closed. At that moment, you instructed me to build up a file and send it everywhere to collect signatures, requiring the UNO to stop the decision of closing the refugee camps. These files were to be brought to Switzerland and handed over to the UNO. You also told me that on the spot, I had to ask as many passers-by as possible to sign our petition. I did exactly what you said. But the UNO spoke-man, when stepped out on the lawn where we were to take the files and signatures from our delegation, only said that he would transmit the file and our Appeal Letter to higher levels, but was unable to foresee their decision…

On our way back, I said, dejected :

- Oh my Master, please let's give up, let's stop these actions ! We put so much energy, so much work into them but what did we achieve ? May be we will even fail. Let's stop, Master !

- My work, you said, is like tossing a pebble into a pond. When the pebble reaches the water, it is so light that it can't create a whirlpool. But it'll slowly sink down and tiny ripples will appear on the surface of the water. As it doesn't sink quickly, the ripples also will take time to disappear. Then I'll keep one tossing pebbles, and the ripples will continue to form on the surface for people to see…

You comments gave me renewed confidence.

You even picked your way through every possible formalities to come to the refugee camps to support our countrymen still waiting to be removed from them. You had not yet obtained the French nationality at that time and the visa application procedure for the South East Asian countries, on the purpose of visiting refugee camps was a terrible ordeal. But you managed to get through them. You came up to the refugees to comfort them and to give them some small presents, so very small because our temple as well as the donors' means were like "a grain of salt in a sea" or "a grain of sand in a desert". But that did not prevent you to move from one camp to another, from an island to another…

Once you wished me to drive you to Fontainebleau to look at the place where different accords and conventions concerning Vietnam were signed. You jokingly called the place "the Vietnamese historical vestiges in France". During that trip, you told me about the Paris Convention 1973, the Fontainebleau Agreement and so many more agreements concerning our country which had been sighed in France and had had a major influence on the Vietnam's history.

Observing you, I realized that your spirit of "serving the living beings is like serving Buddhas" was very profound. It was a perfect illustration of a phrase in the Sutra of 42 Chapters :"For those with unwavering resolve in following the Way, the Way is great indeed !".

You used to repeat :

- As for me, credentials never matter. While learning the Dharma, the essential is to be sincere and industrious. It doesn't matter if you don't learn much, as long as you put it into practice. Shallow knowledge begets shallow practice. But deep knowledge must entail deep practice. The learning and the practice must be simultaneous, don't be just content with theories because it is as unrealistic as walking without putting your food on earth".

In 1992, the various temples in Europe gradually found their abbots. You got in touch with them all to found the Unified Vietnamese Congregation in Europe.

In the same year, with the other monastics in Europe, you invited all the members of the overseas Sangha to gather at the Viên Giác temple in Germany. This meeting was called "the Overseas Sangha council". There was not many of you in number, only 50 our 60 venerables, because at that time the Vietnamese Sangha was still sparse. But almost all the dignitaries were present : The late Most Venerable Thích Hộ Giác, The late Most Venerable Thích Đức Niệm.

The activities in Khánh Anh temple continued to develop. There was an increasing aspiration to learn and practice Buddhism among the devotees. In 1984, with the assistance and encouragement of both Masters Nhất Chân and Thiện Huệ, the first Khánh Anh Dharma class was held in the summer with 18 official students (that you jokingly called the 18 arhats). These students came from Norway, Netherland, Switzerland and France. The spirit of "learning and practicing" was spurred on since then. This event was followed by 4 consecutive years, and the Dharma Class 2, 3 and 4 were held in the Khánh Anh temple at Bagneux. Among the students who attended these first Buddhism classes, a few had taken monastic life and still live in Europe.

As the number of the Buddhists who attended these classes increased year after year, you and the masters transferred the 5th Khánh Anh Buddhist Dharma Class to Switzerland. At that time, Master Quảng Hiền has just arrived and settled in Switzerland. This time, you and the masters agreed to change them into the "Buddhist Seminar in Europe", starting with the first Seminar. And since, every summer, a Buddhist Seminar would take place in one of the different European countries.

You maintained the organization of these seminars up the 25th in Finland. Causes and conditions split up, this seminar was the last one for you. This rupture coincide with that of your life, because you departed, lightly letting go all your undertakings, as well as your "offerings to the Three Jewels by the way of serving others". You left everything behind you to enter the Western Pureland. You left a weaker Buddhist congregation, a scattered Sangha and the unfinished building of the Great Khánh Anh Temple.

Were you exhausted from perpetual sacrifices and from devoting your whole life to others, never thinking of yourself, or taking a mere moment to rest ? You were ailing, but always made tremendous effort, unwilling to let people know of your poor health, lest this would prejudice the common endeavor.

You unusual effort to overcome your physical weakness were a silent teaching for us : "devoting our life to the Way at any cost" as we used to recite during our prayers. You set an example for us by taking your life so lightly while devoting it to the Three Jewels.

From now on the Khánh Anh temple will be without you, the Sangha there will live on without the shade of a big tree, without the silhouette of an admirable Master.

When I was writing these words, the sky and the earth seemed to darken suddenly. I felt a knot in my stomach, my vision blurred, my heart ached and my hands trembled. I was stunned, petrified. But I seemed to hear a far away voice :

- There, there ! What are you doing ? Are you being silly ?

that waked me back up to reality. Oh, I am losing faith again. That won't do, I tell myself. I have to pick myself up, to get going. This is the only way to express my gratitude to you, to be worth of your teaching me, of your bringing me up.

Master, your innermost wishes were to train your disciples to be Dharma tools weren't they ? A kind a Dharma tools according to you special ideal, tools that are of service to living beings, as offerings to the Three Jewels. You used to bring the lesson of the Zen Master Bách Trượng to teach us.

In 1995, because of urgent needs to develop Buddhist activities, you actively looked for a place for worship more extensive than the current Bagneux temple. After long search through real estate ads in newspapers, succession of appointments, visits, decision makings, finally a building land located in Evry was chosen, where will be built the future Khánh Anh New temple. The ceremony of laying the first foundation stone was celebrated on 1995 June 6th in the presence of many Venerable Monks, Nuns, Buddhist faithful, fellow countrymen and local politicians. The late Most Venerable Thích Huyền Vi - Director of the Buddhist Institute Linh Sơn-in Joinville-le-Pont (France), and the late Most Venerable Thich Trung-Quán, Abbot of the Hoa Nghiem monastery in Villeneuve-le-Roi (France) honored us with their presence, and joined us in the prayer during the ceremony.

Respected and admired by all the Venerables residing abroad, you have been appointed Head of the Zen Liễu Quán overseas branch.

Since the 2006 Congress of World Buddhist Sanghas Council (WBSC) in Malaysia, you have been appointed Vice-President of this Council. In the past you already were Member of this council's Ministry of Culture and Education.

Frequently assisting you during your numerous travels, I had opportunities to hear your thoughts, when you shared them with other Grand Masters. You aspired to manage to gather all the Vietnamese Monks and Nuns residing abroad, irrespective of branches, schools or congregations, in order to come together and to work together, particularly in the U.S. where the number of monastics was increasing and reached a significant number. You have worked actively to found a Unit of Buddhist Monastics Overseas, which was praised and supported by the Grand Masters of the five continents, and you have been elected President of this Unit on 2007 January 1st.

The purposes of this organization published in the press release dated 2007 January 18th are: "The Vietnamese Buddhism overseas needs to move towards an open, harmonious monastic community that thrives in unison without distinction of branches, school or congregation, that support each other to share a monastic life aiming at spreading the Buddhadharma, serving, protecting and saving all sentient beings. The survival and development of Vietnamese Buddhism Overseas must be based on the pure and harmonious essence of the Sangha, because the Sangha is the foundation of any subsidiary Buddhist activities at any place and time.

At the end of 2007, at a General Assembly gathering the members of all the Vietnamese Unified Buddhist Congregations in the 5 continents including America, Canada, Europe and Australia, "The inter-continental Vietnamese Unified Buddhist Congregation" were founded. You accepted the position of President for the first term 2008-2010 and therefore were one of the founders of this Congregation.

Knowing that your vows were : "Considering the spreading of the Dharma as my first concern" "Building places of Worship everywhere" and "Being Omnipresent", in 2011 August, you have been invited at the great Ceremony in Colombo, capital of Sri Lanka, by the General Assembly of the Buddhist Sangha and the Government of Sri Lanka, to receive an Most Honorary Title distinguishing you as a very active propagator of the Buddhadharma in European and American countries.

You also worked hard in 2012 to create the "Supreme Buddhism Sangha Council" in France, and currently were its President.

Through all your past activities and your light and serene departure, I learned the lesson of "letting go", "performing without clinging". You have fully used your life serving the Buddhism until its last minute. Your departure took place right after the closing of the 25th Buddhist Seminar in Finland.

You have gone, leaving a line of conduct so that the Masters can continue your work in the Buddhist Congregation. You have gone to be the glue that clogs the cracks ; to be the cement reconciling differences in these troubled times, gone to ring the bell to wake up sleeping consciences.

You have gone, but the congregation is still here, the Buddhist Sangha is still here, your followers are still here, and we, your disciples are still here. Last year at this time, You stood there, at the door of your room, a resplendent and majestic image, but this year, at this place, the autumn wind is blowing, your door is open, but He who smiled in the autumn wind is no more. "The Pillar" has gone to the West.

We, your disciples, met at the weekly ceremonies to respectfully honor you, then at the ceremony of One Hundred Days, and then the two Commemorations "Tieu Tuong" and "Dai Tuong" that followed. Every activity we do are things of ordinary life, corresponding to the world in which we are temporarily living. I vow to see you again in the Western Land, where "these earthly religious activities" are unnecessary and where together, we would continue the same path in the Western Land of Bliss.

The still dark sky of Evry this morning is a little chilly, a little rainy, a little windy. An autumn weather.

The Great Pagoda has an air incompleteness : boxes of tiles lying about in the court ; here and there a few pieces of planks, a few bags of cement, iron bars ... Things are still disorganized, and this image reflects the spirit of your followers confronting your sudden departure.

We are not psychologically prepared to "carefree-ly" carry on with your tasks although before, they were quite familiar. But our mind is not yet ready to take on the great mission that you handed down to us concerning this imposing building. Seen from outside, things seem to work smoothly but in reality, we do not yet feel safe psychologically without our large protecting tree : our revered Master.

Let's trust that the causes and conditions will fix every thing. Let things flow naturally like a stream, following its course. Let's hope that tomorrow, the Great Khánh Anh temple will become like a flow of water, and like every other flows, it will slowly, freely drift with the current.

If it happens to be an obstacle on its way, and even if the flow is divided into two streams, the water will follow its current to get around the obstacle, and then will meet again to make one. It might happen also that the obstacle, like a pebble, is too small to resist the current and the water will still flow freely. In either case, the water will split in two or will follow its current, it is always the same water, the flowing is still the water. The water is unmovable, unchangeable, whichever state it takes : solid, liquid or gas. Its nature is humidity. Poured in a glass, it will take the shape of the glass ; poured in a bottle, it will take the shape of the bottle. Poured in a bowl, its quantity is unchanged, but it will take the shape of the bowl. Poured in a chipped bowl, it will spill out from the crack, but the lost water is still water.

My mind is like the water, whatever the situation, I vow to be faithful to the Way. The temple can be prosperous or impoverished, and even with you gone, I am still hunger to learn and to practice with a "beginner's mind", passionately, enthusiastically, and with the same desire to "commit myself". But the passion of the beginner has mellowed, as expressed in the second part of the poem "Lô Sơn mountain"[1], the mountain which inspired the poet Tô Đông Pha when he visited it.

My revered Master !

The day your coffin was brought back to Paris from Finland as well as during your funeral, the totality of monks, nuns and faithful from all over Europe was present. It was in this part of the planet that you "worn your straw sandals" to clear the "waste land" minded of your first followers. Then you became their mentor, counseling them to create Buddhist Associations, then to invite the Masters to guide them on the spiritual path. They respect you, revere you as their Master, their "Elder brother", their Patriarch… and were there in full strength to welcome you back to France as well as to see you off to the Western Pureland.

Then the Venerables, from all the continents, have come together to recite each sentence, each verse of the Sutras praying for you as if to bring a little warmth and comfort in the icy hearts of your orphan disciples in these memorable days of mourning.

Respectfully, I prostrate in front my Masters, expressing my deep gratitude : despite your weariness after the hardships of long journeys, you made us the honor of coming to the Great unfinished Temple, with its rooms in precarious comfort, imperfect arrangement, but you have benevolently forgiven us for these inconveniences.

My revered Master is my witness.

"My revered Master is no more

"in a flash almost one hundred days have gone by

"but my heart still aches

"Grieving for my Compassionate Father".

The mist in Lushan mountain shrouded the Zhejiang river's tides

Without seeing it, I would lament all my life

But once on the mountain, in fact nothing is unusual

The mist in Lushan mountain shrouded the Zhejiang river's tides

Su Dongpo (Song dynasty poet)

One has to understand this poem according to the Zen's Qing Yuan Wei Xin saying : "before I had studied Ch'an for thirty years, I saw mountains as mountains, and rivers as rivers. When I arrived at a more intimate knowledge, I came to the point where I saw that mountains are not mountains, and rivers are not rivers. But now that I have got its very substance I am at rest. For it's just that I see mountains once again as mountains, and rivers once again as rivers".

MAITRE REGRETTÉ,

UN AN APRÈS, VOTRE EXEMPLE RÉSONNE ENCORE

DANS LE VENT D’AUTOMNE

« La Vie, La Mort, problématiques grandioses

Fulgurante, L’Impermanence…. »

Je me suis exécutée.

Soudain, j’entendis murmurer à l’oreille : « Allons ! Allons! Que fais-tu donc ? Encore des idioties, je parie...». Je reviens brusquement à la réalité. Ah ! je me suis encore laissée aller.
