KOAN STUDY(CÔNG ÁN)

Koan Study Công Án
There were thirteen koans presented in this book. Mostly, each one had three parts: initially, Master Tue Trung read aloud some lines from a sutra or a Zen anecdote; secondly, he said some commentary words or gave a gesture; and lastly, he composed a poem accordingly.

In Vietnam these days, koan practice is taught somehow different from the approach that Tue Trung showed in this book. The monasteries influenced by the late Zen Master Duy Luc now make koan study as their core practice, but mostly with the huatou method in which the practitioner keeps watching the mind stream being blocked by a great doubt. In dozens of monasteries influenced by the well-known Zen Master Thanh Tu, who has revived the 700-year-old Truc Lam Zen School to become the largest Zen School in Vietnam now, the koan study is taught alongside scriptures and other practices.

How could we enter the koan practice?
All the comments Tue Trung gives for the thirteen koans in this book have only turned them into gateless mazes; however, Zen masters say that koan practice is a powerful tool to help practitioners go beyond birth and death.

Surely, we can not reason with birth and death; they are not far apart from us. They are one with us; birth and death are one with us.

Because you should not reason with koans, the practice requires neither words nor thoughts. That means that before handling a koan, you should be familiar with some meditation methods that would help to calm your mind first. In case you feel it’s hard to calm your mind, you are cordially invited to read the book The Teachings From Ancient Vietnamese Zen Masters. (link: http://thuvienhoasen.org/ZenAncientMasters.htm)

Trường hợp bạn cảm thấy khó bình tâm, xin trân trọng mời bạn vào đọc cuốn sách song ngữ này: The Teachings From Ancient Vietnamese Zen Masters. (link: http://thuvienhoasen.org/ZenAncientMasters.htm)

Buddha once said, “Nothing should be clung to.” So, why koan? The koan practice doesn’t give you anything to grasp or possess; on the contrary, it just a means to strip the mind to the essence. And the essence is truly the nonself.

How could we say about Nirvana -- the state that Buddha referred to as unborn, unageing, unmade, and undying?
How could we think about the unthinkable, and speak about the unspeakable? In koan practice, when all thoughts and words could not arise in your mind, you are facing directly to the unthinkable and unspeakable.

Now, as a reader, you could enjoy the koan just like a cup of tea. A sip, then a sip. Just keep feeling only, and think nothing. If a thought arises while you are drinking, you would lose the taste of tea. Let the cup of tea become one with you, and let the koan be you. Enjoy the reading.

1. Dharmas of Birth and Death

Raising case:
Parinirvana Sutra says, “All deeds are impermanent; they are dharmas of birth and death.”

Tue Trung commented, “What is brought into existence, and what ceases to exist?”

Poem:
All deeds are impermanent;
they are dharmas of birth and death.
The rain showers over the three realms;
the wind blows on all ten directions.
The enlightened and the unenlightened don’t stay together; the dragons and the snakes don’t mix.
All deeds are impermanent; all are emptiness.
Watch the mind of birth and death, and see who is asking and replying.
If I see the old Gautama with chilly body, I will give him a kick at his waist.
Aha!
If you haven’t seen yet the warm colors of the spring, just watch the cherry flowers bloom.

1. Pháp Sanh Diệt

Cử:
Kinh Niết-bàn nói:
Các hạnh vô thường
Là pháp sanh diệt.

Thầy nói:
- Cái gì sanh diệt?

Tụng:
Các hạnh vô thường
Là pháp sanh diệt.
Ba cõi mưa mịt mù
Mười phương gió vi vút.
Phàm thánh chẳng ở chung
Rắn rồng không lẫn lộn.
Các hạnh vô thường tất cả không
Tâm sanh diệt kia ai hỏi đáp?
Nếu gặp lão Cồ-đàm thân cóng lạnh
Chưa khỏi ngang hông cho một đạp.
Chao!
Không thấy màu xuân ấm
Hay xem đào lý hoa.

2. Nirvana is Blissful

Raising case:
Cease the cycle of birth and death;
blissful are those who enter the complete extinction.

Tue Trung commented, “Why did Uyen Minh raise eyebrows?”

Poem:
Cease the cycle of birth and death;
blissful are those who enter the complete extinction.
When birds get tired, they rest on a reed bed.
When fish feel fatigued, they lie on a river bottom.
I don’t mind when my body gets ill; I just feel sorry for my hands tired of mixing herbal drugs.
To pass the one-log bridge, don’t carry a heavy burden; upon arriving home, stop asking for any path
and be free from the worry of falling down.
In case you are still on the path, learn from the old sages and never stop.
Oh!
You could never come to the brook Vo Lang, if you don’t have a passion to pass the reed beds.

2. Tịch Diệt Vi Lạc

Cử:
Sanh diệt diệt rồi
Tịch diệt là vui.

Thầy nói: - Uyên Minh châu mày làm gì?

Tụng:
Sanh diệt diệt rồi
Tịch diệt là vui.
Chim mỏi đậu khóm lau
Cá mệt dừng đáy nước.
Chẳng ngại thân nhuốm đau
Chỉ e tay chế thuốc.
Đừng đeo mang gánh nặng
Đi qua cầu một cây.
Đến nhà thôi thưa hỏi
Từ đâu lại sẩy chân.
Muôn một không được dừng
Như trước xem mưu lược.
Ối!
Nếu chẳng nhân mê bờ lau lách
Đi càn được đến suối Võ Lăng.

3. Contemplating Buddha

Raising case:
Vimalakirti Sutra says, “Contemplate the true form of the body; just like that, contemplate Buddha.”

Tue Trung smiled.

Poem:
Contemplate the true form of the body;
just like that, contemplate Buddha.
Searching for a needle that was dropped on the ground, you are now turning your face up toward the sky.
You had not an inch of brain originally;
you now have rampantly impure thoughts.
Having not been tied originally, you now want to be tied;
having not had a shackle initially, you now want one.
A tiger is sitting; see that’s truly a sitting tiger.
A dragon is sleeping; see that’s truly a sleeping dragon.
If you want to know the body and Buddha, just observe the root: planting a lotus seed, you later will have a red lotus flower.

The sun rises over the ocean; only when you rub the eyes, you will see the sun is moving.

3. Quán Phật

Cử:
Kinh Duy-ma nói:
Quán thật tướng của thân
Quán Phật cũng như vậy.
Thầy nở nụ cười.

Tụng:
Quán thật tướng của thân
Quán Phật cũng như vậy.
Tìm kim rơi đất
Ngửa mặt xem trời.
Xưa kia không tấc dạ
Ngày nay lỗi bời bời.
Không trói lại cầu trói
Không ràng lại đến ràng.
Cọp ngồi thật cọp ngồi
Rồng ngủ là rồng ngủ.
Muốn biết thân cùng Phật
Trồng ngó nẩy sen hồng.
Gương ngọc tròn vành lên góc biển
Chỉ nhân ấn mắt có đổi dời.

4. Neither Born Nor Destroyed

Raising case:
Avatamsaka Sutra says, “The Buddhas appear constantly before the eyes of those who understand that all things are neither born nor destroyed.”

Tue Trung commented, “Watch! Watch!”
Then continued, “Loudly tell them to keep silent. Reject the cakes, eat the flour.”
Katsu!

Poem:
Buddha used his tongue to deceive sentient beings.
He walked alone, while all others slept soundly and dreamed deeply despite the night was almost over.
At the eastern gate, the gong sounded and ushered the morning in.

4. Chẳng Sanh Chẳng Diệt

Cử:
Kinh Hoa Nghiêm nói:
Tất cả pháp chẳng sanh
Tất cả pháp chẳng diệt
Nếu hay hiểu như thế
Chư Phật thường hiện tiền.
Thầy nói:
- Xem ! Xem!
Lại nói:
Lớn giọng bảo im
Bỏ bánh ăn bột.
Hét!

Tụng:
Đầu vàng (Phật) khua lưỡi gạt chúng sanh
Chốn chốn ngủ say, dạo một mình.
Chẳng quản đêm tàn còn mộng mị
Đinh, đông cửa phượng giục tàn canh.

5. The First, The Second

Raising case:
A monk asked Zen Master Van Tue, “Everybody assembled. What should we discuss?”
Zen Master Van Tue said, “The introduction chapter, the first.”

Tue Trung commented, “If the second, still okay.”

Poem:
Raise the introduction chapter, the first;
see the equality, neither high nor low.
The enlightened see all things as neither real nor unreal. The unenlightened worry about losing and gaining.
The wooden man dances the music of thac-chi.
The stone girl plays on her flute a song of tat-lat.
Do you want to understand this meaning?
-- Prajna Paramita.

5. Thứ Nhất, Thứ Nhì

Cử:
Tăng hỏi Thiền sư Vạn Tuế: Đại chúng nhóm họp, cùng bàn việc gì? Sư đáp: Phẩm tựa thứ nhất.

Thầy nói:
- Thứ nhì cũng được.

Tụng:
Nói phẩm tựa thứ nhất
Trên dưới không đồng bậc.
Người trí không thật hư
Kẻ mê sanh được mất.
Người gỗ múa thác chi
Gái đá thổi tất lật.
Muốn tìm rõ ý này
Bát-nhã ba-la-mật.

6. Buddha Nature

Raising case:
A monk asked Zen Master Truong Sa Canh Sam, “After an earthworm is cut in two pieces, each half moves independently. Which half does the Buddha nature reside in?”
Truong Sa said, “Moving and not moving – what is that realm?”

Tue Trung commented, “Both sides don’t move; only your side moves.”

Poem:
An earthworm is cut in two pieces.
Who knows why each half is moving?
Facing the question of Buddha nature is really hard.
Don’t turn away from the guy who opened his heart to show the six turtles hiding inside.

6. Phật Tánh

Cử:
Tăng hỏi Thiền sư Cảnh Sầm ở Trường Sa: “Con trùn chặt làm hai đoạn, đoạn nào cũng cử động, vậy Phật tánh ở đoạn nào?” Trường Sa đáp: “Động cùng chẳng động là cảnh giới gì?”

Thầy nói:
Hai bên không động,
Động ở bên ông.

Tụng:
Con trùn chặt đứt làm hai khúc
Mỗi khúc lăng quăng, có ai biết.
Hỏi ra Phật tánh toàn khó thay
Cô phụ phanh lòng giấu sáu rùa.

7. Burning the Portrait

Raising case:
A monk drew a portrait of Zen Master Trieu Chau, and presented it as an offering to him.
Trieu Chau said, “Now tell me. Does it look like me? Doesn’t it look like me? If it looks like me, beat me to death; if it doesn’t, burn it to ashes.”
The monk stayed silent.

Tue Trung commented, “So much wasteful!”

Poem:
On the precious paper, the brush tip
vaguely draws the original body.
Beating to death, or burning to ashes?
Very few beings on heaven and earth could do that.

8. The Mirror

Raising case:
Qui Son wrapped a mirror and sent it to Nguong Son. After receiving the mirror, Nguong Son took it to the dharma hall, raised it high and asked the monks, “Reply me. Is this Qui Son’s mirror, or Nguong Son’s mirror? If nobody can reply, I will smash the mirror.”
Nobody could answer.
Nguong Son smashed it into pieces.

Tue Trung commented, “Still threatened by Qui Son disaster.” After a pause, Master continued, “That is to follow the small deeds and turn away the great vehicle.”

Poem:
The precious mirror is wrapped; however, its front surface is still open out there. All things, beautiful or ugly, are shown themselves in the mirror. Don’t break it and turn away from the good intention. Just keep it, and let it shine freely.

9. Honor and Dishonor

Raising case:
Lao Tzu said, “Honor and dishonor – both are fearful.”

Tue Trung commented, “A skillful hand paints thousand things. In the mind, ten thousand sorrows are blooming.”

Poem:
When it’s cold, put on your jacket; hot, take it off; neither cold nor hot, who knows what?
Watch the willows and flowers in the royal garden.
Don’t trash the four seasons for searching only the spring.

9. Vinh nhục

Cử:
Lão Tử nói: Vinh nhục đều sợ.

Niêm:
Tay khéo vẽ nên ngàn sự vật
Tâm này nẩy nở muôn mối sầu.

Tụng:
Lạnh thì mặc áo, nực cởi ra
Không lạnh không nực, ai biết mà.
Chỉ xem liễu ngự hoa cung sắc
Đâu chỉ tìm xuân bỏ bốn mùa.

10. Prostration to Buddha

Raising case:
Zen Master Lam Te visited the head monk of a Buddhist tower. The head monk asked, “Prostrating to the Buddha first, or to the Patriarch first?”
Lam Te said, “Prostrating to neither Buddha nor Patriarch.”
The head monk asked, “Elder monk, do you have any grievance against the Buddha and Patriarch?”
Lam Te shook his sleeves, and walked out.

Tue Trung commented, “The head of the tiger is already ridden, but its whiskers could not be touched.”

Poem:
Once shaking his sleeves, Lam Te walked out leisurely. The head monk looked with eyes wide open, and could not understand. Ultimately, prostrate to neither Buddha nor Patriarch. The light of autumn shines into the creek, and reflects the jewels brightly.

10. Lễ Phật

Cử:
Thiền sư Lâm Tế đến thăm chủ tháp. Chủ tháp hỏi: “Lễ Phật trước hay lễ Tổ trước?” Lâm Tế đáp: “Tổ Phật đều chẳng lễ.” Chủ tháp hỏi: “Tổ Phật cùng Trưởng lão có oán thù gì mà chẳng lễ?” Lâm Tế liền phủi áo đi ra.

Thầy nói:
Được cỡi đầu cọp
Chẳng vuốt râu hùm.

Tụng:
Một lần phủi áo thong thả đi
Chủ tháp trợn trừng chẳng liễu tri.
Phật, Tổ cùng đều không lễ
Thu quang khe sáng ngọc rạng ngời.

11. The Donkey Ahead

Raising case:
Tran Ton Tuc asked a monk, “Where do you come from?”
The monk stared at Tran Ton Tuc with eyes wide open.
Tran Ton Tuc then said, “You, the guy who walked with a donkey ahead and a horse behind. Say a sentence.”
The monk stayed silent.

Poem:
[While walking in the cycle of life,] with a donkey ahead and a horse behind, don’t move crisscross. How about when you are kicked by a donkey and stomped by a horse? In a dream last night, someone asked that question. The two dead bodies were buried in one same deep tomb.

11. Lừa Trước

Cử:
Trần Tôn Túc hỏi vị Tăng: Ở đâu đến? Vị Tăng trợn mắt nhìn Sư.
Sư nói:
Kẻ lừa trước ngựa sau
Nói thử một câu xem?
Vị Tăng lặng câm.

Tụng:
Ngựa sau lừa trước chớ ngược ngang
Lừa đá ngựa giày lại thế nào?
Đêm trước trong mơ người ướm hỏi
Hai thây chôn dưới một mồ sâu.

12. Prostation to Students

Raising case:
Zen Master Canh Thong, the abbot at Hoac Son, was asked by a layman, “What is the core meaning of Buddhism?”
Canh Thong made a prostration. The layman asked, “Why do you, a monk, prostrate to a layman?” Canh Thong said, “You should hear that we have to respect the students.”
Tue Trung commented, “Yes, aye and yeah. How far apart among them?”
Canh Thong then asked the monk, “Where do you come from?” The monk raised high his sitting mat.
Canh Thong said, “Head of a dragon, tail of a snake.”
Tue Trung commented, “The moon’s reflection is not the living way of this one family.”
The monk then asked Canh Thong, “What is a Buddha?”
Canh Thong hit the monk. The monk hit back.
Canh Thong said, “You hit me within morality. I hit you without morality.” The monk stayed silent. Canh Thong told him to leave.
Tue Trung commented, “When one side uses a violent army, it would be meaningless. When one side sets a chicken-baited trap to catch foxes, the puppy would offend the tiger.”

Poem:
The military general lost the three battles. When the king gave an order, the six countries returned to peace. A war just ended, and a thousand spears were just laid down; then again, ten thousand horses neighed loudly in the autumn.

13. Asking to give a dharma talk

Raising case:
A nun came to see Zen Master Dam Khong, and asked him to let her give a dharma talk. Dam Khong said, “Women should not give dharma talks.”
The nun said, “An eight-year-old dragon girl became a Buddha. So!”
Dam Khong said, “That dragon girl had the power to transform in eighteen ways. I want to see if you can transform just once?”
The nun said, “Able to transform are only the foxes that have become evil spirits.” Dam Khong hit and told her to leave.

Tue Trung commented, “Right is right. But still stuck in a one-way path.”

Poem:
Those who hold or drop a basket are not only the ones who love the profound teachings and want a dharma talk.
To raise the core meaning, hit and expel the wild fox.
Previously, three and three; afterward, three and three.

- THE END -
