Mum was born in Hai Phong, Vietnam in 1952. She was the only girl with an older and younger brother – and raised by her widowed Mum, after losing her Dad to an illness when she was 10 years of age. She married my Dad in 1975 and welcomed two daughters in Vietnam.

Along with my Dad and my two older sisters, they migrated to Hong Kong in 1980 where they welcomed a third daughter, our late sister Nam. After family day outs and making lifelong friends here, they finally migrating to Australia in 1983 where our family welcomed another daughter and finally a son - completing our family of seven. A family big enough that required the Toyota Tarago to haul the tribe everywhere.

On Fridays after school - Dad would be the driver of this Tarago and Mum would do our groceries at the market with all five kids in tow. It was our weekly outing together as a family. Whatever we did, we always did it as a family.

Mum loved to feed people. She found pure joy in watching her children and others enjoying her homecooked meals. And if you enjoyed it, she’d cook it another thousand time, until you complimented another dish, and then she’d cook THAT one for you a thousand time again. Growing up, raising 5 kids whilst working from home – she never failed to plate up 3 dishes for dinner – every single night. It was most certainly her love language.

Ever since I could remember, her other passion in life was plants and flower. Growing up our home – inside and out – we were surrounded by greenery and bright colours. It is lovely to see that she is still surrounded by bright and beautiful flowers today.

As we got older, and we no longer relied on mum too heavily, she found great joy in travelling with her friends all around the world and reuniting with old friends. Vietnam, Cairns, Caribbean Islands Cruise, Paris, Japan and Hong Kong just to name a few. Her dream was always to take the whole family back to Vietnam together – but her health and her illness got the better of her in recent years.

Mum was diagnosed with a cancer called Multiple Myeloma in 2003. This rocked our world to the core. Despite the stats at the time, despite what little knowledge that was available in treating this disease – Mum fought. She fought because of her kids and grandkids. Regardless of the statistics, Mum lived with this disease for 20 years. Her doctor himself describes mum to be a ‘miracle patient’ and a patient who never complained and never cried - despite justified in doing so.

No matter where my Mum’s life landed, she was thankful for all we had and made the most of it for her children. No matter how much hardship and heartbreak Mum experienced in her lifetime – more heartbreak than anyone could or should have endured - and probably more than what we will ever know - she never once let it negatively imprint her spirit and outlook on life. Life wasn’t easy, but she always lived it as a blessed life being surrounded by growing family village and solid surrounding of friends. Particular her girlfriends as they found a new era of their friendship. Mum loved all her many outings and adventures with who we fondly refer to as her posse – as it is very clear in their priceless photos today.

Mum has this certain charisma about her. She wasn’t loud or boastful, but she could most certainly hold a conversation with anyone from any walks of life – not uncommon that it could be hours at a time - with her telephone conversations going from international pay cards, to hanging the cordless phone off her top while in the garden, to discovering calling overseas over the internet, to facetiming on her new iphone, to eventually conquering it all with her new airpods. Mum was respected by so many – her wisdom and advice was often sort after here and abroad. She had a way of giving life lessons from what she learnt in her own life that just made sense – eventually.

Mum has this special ability to imprint on someone’s life no matter how long you may have known her. It didn’t matter how many kids she had or even how many grandchildren she had - Mum always had room in her heart to welcome and love others. Despite language barriers or culture differences – her radiant smile and aurora of warmth was all she needed to tell you were welcomed, that she was happy to see you – and ask if you had eaten.

Her legacy that she leaves behind - is through us, her children. She lived her life for us and in turn we shall keep her memories alive and pass on her life learnings on to our own children and future generations.

Ngoc. Thank you for being mum’s best friend. Her sou chef. Her partner in mothering the four of us growing up and particularly after Dad. You could sit and chat and give each other advice about anything and everything together. You have her heart and spirit and her commitment to always being a mum first. Food is your love language too. You were two peas in a pod.

Le. You share Mum’s work ethic, her perfectionism in all that you do whilst forever multi-tasking – yet always make time for mum and take her out – even just to get ice cream. She always looked incredibly happy. You are the protagonist in mum’s 20 year health journey. If it were not for your persistence and your smarts to find the clinical trial and then to understand it and then explain to mum and dad at such a young age - we would not have been blessed with so many extra miracle years. You continued to advocate for Mum until the very end. You have Mum’s will power, determination and grit.

Q. The forever baby boy. Mum adored you like no other. No matter how big you got, no matter how old you got – Mum always wanted to make sure you were ok and that you had a plate of fruits ready for you. You shared an incredible special bond and even language that only a mother could understand. She thoroughly enjoyed your chats together and could always call upon you no matter how small or big. She particularly enjoyed watching you enter your new chapter as a dad to your girls. You have Mum’s charisma and ability to talk to anyone and everyone with that same radiant smile.

Patrick, Trang, Jaypes and Linh – thank you for loving and treating Mum like your very own, as she loved you – as her very own. I have no doubt she is at peace knowing that her children have lifelong partners to help us during this difficult period but is also at peace knowing that she has left us in good hands.

To Ba’s grandkids. All nine of you, you are the very reason Ba fought extra hard. You gave her extra life and she used every ounce of it to give us extra years together. She loved all the visits, the cuddles and the handmade gifts over the last 22 years. She cherished it all. No matter the milestone or event – big or small. She was right there in your corner cheering you on.

Mum is the true definition of family matriarch. She is our lighthouse – who guided us and always provided a safe place to navigate us throughout our adventures in the world. No matter what we did or where we ended up, we always found our way home back to Mum. She was our shining beacon of light.

This life is good and beautiful but not without heartbreak and pain. Pain is the cost for those left behind - the cost of living. Saying bye to mum has been unfathomable and I’m yet to reconcile what a future looks like without her in it. But in her death also comes peace and comfort. Peace that mum is no longer suffering in pain. Peace that she has freedom. Peace that she raised and set her 5 children on the right path. Peace that she fought so hard to watch in her 9 grandchildren grow up and reach milestones. Comfort in knowing that Mum are free and will be reunited with Dad and Nam. Comfort knowing that Dad will make her laugh like no other again. Comfort knowing that she will go on to look after and cook for Nam again. We find comfort in knowing that Mum is no longer suffering or in pain. Free to enjoy food and free to travel again.

It has been touching to hear all the stories from all the lives she has touched in her 72 years on this earth. It is with a heavy heart that I stand before you yet again but from the bottom of mine and my sibling’s heart, we are forever grateful for the love and support we have been shown from everyone near and across the oceans on the loss of our mother – Quy.

We acknowledge that Mrs Margaret Elanie Morgan who was born in Birmingham, England on the 21s January 1921 and who passed away in Arcare nursing home, Wantirna, at 11pm, Thursday, 18th May 2017, aged 97 years, has contributed significantly to your families and will be sadly missed. We have known that Mrs Margaret is lovely mother of 3 children. She and her husband Mr Harold Morgan (1927-2006) brought their children to Australia in 1963. Both of them work hard to look after their children. Mrs Margaret is a kind and wise lady, with a sense of humour. Life was not always easy for her, but she kept strong for her family. In the year of 2011, she was 90 years old. She marked that important point of her life by making a vow to become a Buddhist disciple and Master Tam Phuong gave her the Buddhist name ‘Thien An Hoa’, meaning that Good Deed and Harmony Life. She was very happy to have that beautiful religious name.
