The Life

Many centuries ago there lived a king who led the Vietnamese people to defeat the Mongolian invaders twice; one day in 1293 this great king ceded the throne, few years later became a monk, and then left a Zen heritage that has flourished now as the largest Zen school in Vietnam. He was Tran Nhan Tong, the third king of Tran Dynasty and the founder of the Truc Lam Zen School.

He was born in 1258, the eldest child of King Tran Thanh Tong and Nguyen Thanh Hoang Thai Hau. His birth name was Tran Kham. Tran Nhan Tong was fond of Zen since childhood despite his royal upbringing. Becoming Crown Prince at sixteen years old, he tried to yield that role to his younger brother, but his father, King Tran Thanh Tong, refused. Then the king married him to the eldest daughter of Nguyen Tu Quoc Mau; his wife later had the title of Kham Tu Thai Hau. He lived in royal happiness, but always thought of becoming a monk.

In the middle of one night, he climbed out of the citadel, and fled toward Yen Tu Mountain. When approaching Thap Temple at the Dong Cuu Mountain and feeling so much tired, he got in the tower and lay down for a rest. The head monk made a meal for the guest, and recognized that the stranger had an extraordinary apprearance. After getting the news, the king deployed an army unit to find him. He sadly returned to the palace.

Tran Nhan Tong became the king of Vietnam in 1279, when he was twenty-one years old. While ruling the kingdom, he tried to keep himself pure for spiritual practice. He came daily to Tu Phuoc Temple in the imperial city for practice.

One day, he took a nap at noon and saw a golden lotus growing from his navel; the lotus flower was as large as a cart wheel on which a golden Buddha sat in meditation. Someone standing near pointed at him and said, “Do you know this Buddha? He is the Buddha of Shining Transformation.” When awakened, he told his father about the dream. King Tran Thanh Ton praised that as something unusual.

Tran Nhan Tong ate vegetarian food and lived a simple life. His body was thin. Tran Thanh Tong showed surprise and asked him why he looked weak. After he told about the way he lived, his father cried and said, “I am an old man, relying on you only. You now live in that way; how could you wield the nation that was passed on from ancestors?” Upon hearing his father’s words, he wept.

Tran Nhan Tong was smart and studious. It was said that he read all the books in the royal palace, and understood their Buddhist and worldly teachings. When he had free time, he invited Zen masters to come and discuss about the way of mind. He studied Zen under Tue Trung Thuong Si, realized the heart of Zen, and revered Tue Trung as teacher.

He fought many wars during his reign. With the unity of the Vietnamese people, he led the resistance forces and twice, in 1285 and in 1288, drove back the Mongolian invaders. The historians also gave him high points for organizing two national conferences on strategic resistance. Facing the long and hard wars, he held a conference of the military generals at Binh Than, and then a conference of the old sages at Dien Hong to put the whole nation into strong national resistances.

The invaders were defeated and expelled; the wars ended with so many lives lost and towns destroyed. It took years to rebuild the country.

Then Tran Nhan Tong yielded the kingship to his son Tran Anh Tong in 1293, mentored the new king for six years, and prepared to become a monk.

In 1299, Tran Nhan Tong entered the monkhood at Yen Tu Mountain, where he practiced strictly as an ascetic and took the name of Huong Van Dai Dau Da – meaning “A Great Ascetic of Fragrant Clouds.”

In 1304, Tran Nhan Tong traveled around the country, encouraged his people to quit worshipping sexual gods, and taught the ten good deeds. In the winter of the same year, King Tran Anh Tong submitted a petition to ask Tran Nhan Tong to come to the royal citadel and transmit the bodhisattva precepts. Then afterward, Tran Nhan Tong came to reside at Sung Nghiem Temple in Linh Son Mountain, where he taught Zen to the general public.

In the first month of 1308, Tran Nhan Tong appointed the monk Phap Loa as the abbot of Bao An Zen Monastery in Sieu Loai County. In the fourth month of the same year, he came to Vinh Nghiem Temple at Luong Giang for the summer retreat, and selected Phap Loa to serve as the retreat director. He himself lectured on Truyen Dang Luc (Record of Transmission of the Lamp) while asking the Imperial Preceptor Dao Nhat to expound the Lotus Sutra. After the summer retreat, he dismissed all laypersons and servants, and hiked deep into the forest, upward the Yen Tu Mountain with only ten attendant monks. While staying at the Tu Tieu Temple, he expounded more profoundly Truyen Dang Luc for his dharma heir, Phap Loa.

He then climbed over the mountain, looked around all the caves, and turned a cave into his home. Phap Loa said, “Dear Master, you are an old man, and now live dangerously with the snow and dew so cold; I worry that something bad might happen to you, the great master we are relying on.” Tran Nhan Tong replied, “My season has come. I just plan for a long period of time.”

In the fifth day of the tenth month of the same year, some family members of Princess Thien Doan came to see him and said, “Princess Thien Doan is badly ill. She begs to see you before her death.” Tran Nhan Ton emotionally said, “The season has come.” He grasped a bamboo staff and went down the mountain with only one attendant.

In the tenth day of that same month, he came to the capital. He met his royal family, shared with them some emotional moments, and gave dharma talks about the way beyond birth and death.

In the fifteenth day of the same month, he left the capital to go back to his monastery. He stopped for a night’s rest at Sieu Loai Temple; next morning, he walked to the temple of Co Chau Village and left the following poem.

Confined in a breath, human life is short;
larger than two oceans of gold,
human greed is vast;
while being jailed in the palace of evil,
human suffers.
Blissful incomparably are those who enter the Buddha land.

In the seventeenth day of the month, he stopped for a rest at Sung Nghiem Temple in Linh Son. Tuyen Tu Hoang Thai Hau invited him for a meal offering at Binh Duong Shrine. He said happily, “This is the last meal offering.”

In the eighteenth day of the month, he walked to Tu Lam Temple at An Ky Sanh Mountain. Feeling a headache, he said to two monks in the temple, “I want to hike to Ngoa Van Peak, but my legs feel weak. What should I do?”

The two monks replied that they would help to carry him up. Coming to Ngoa Van Temple at the peak, he said thanks to the two monks, and urged them, “Go down the mountain and practice hard; don’t play down the matter of birth and death.”

In the nineteenth day of the month, he asked his attendant Phap Khong to go to Tu Tieu Temple at Yen Tu Mountain and tell Bao Sat to come down and see him urgently.

In the twenty-first day of the month, Bao Sat arrived at Ngoa Van Temple.
Tran Nhan Tong saw him and said, “I am departing now. Why do you come so late? If you still have something unclear about Buddhist teachings, just ask me now.”

Bao Sat said, “When Ma To felt ill, the head monk asked, ‘Dear Master, how do you feel these days?’ Ma To replied, ‘Sun Face Buddha, Moon Face Buddha.’ What did that mean?”

Tran Nhan Tong spoke loudly, “The Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors – What were they?”

(A note should be made here. Sun Face Buddha and Moon Face Buddha are the names of two Buddhas whose faces look like a sun and a moon respectively. Both names are listed in the Ten Thousand Buddhas Sutra. It is said that Sun Face Buddha’s life lasted 1,800 years, and Moon Face Buddha’s life only one day and one night.)

Bao Sat asked again, “What does the old saying ‘As flowers bloom, so does the silk brocade; as bamboos in the south grow, so do the trees in the north’ mean?”

Tran Nhan Tong replied, “They made you blind.”
Bao Sat stopped asking.

Then the sky was dark and gloomy for several days. The birds and monkeys in the forest cried sorrowfully.

In the night of the first day of the eleventh month of that year, the sky became clear and full of shining stars. Tran Nhan Tong asked Bao Sat, “What time is it now?”
Bao Sat replied, “The hour of the mouse.”

Tran Nhan Tong lifted the curtain, looked out and said, “Now is the time I have to go.”
Bao Sat asked, “Where are you going to?”
Tran Nhan Tong read the poem below.

If you constantly see that all things
are unborn and that all things
are undying, all Buddhas appear
constantly in front of your eyes.
Nothing is coming or going.

Bao Sat asked, “How about when it is unborn and undying?”
Tran Nhan Tong patted on Bao Sat’s mouth, and said, “Don’t talk in your sleep.”

Then Tran Nhan Ton lay down as a lion and passed away peacefully at the age of 51, in the year 1308.

Born in 1258 and died in 1308, Tran Nhan Tong lived only half a century; however, after flourishing more than seven hundred years, the Zen school he founded has become now the largest one in Vietnam. Also, as a prolific writer, Tran Nhan Tong left many Zen poems and books on Buddhist teachings that have become inspiration sources for future generations.

Phap Loa obeyed his master’s will, performed the cremation ceremony, and collected pieces of five-color bony relics. After forming a royal procession to carry the relics to Duc Lang for worship, King Tran Anh Tong built a stupa in the court of Van Yen Temple on Yen Tu Mountain. The king named the stupa as Hue Quang Kim Thap, and proclaimed Tran Nhan Tong as a buddha named Dai Thanh Tran Trieu Truc Lam Dau Da Tinh Tue Giac Hoang Dieu Ngu To Phat.

Ngày mười tám, Ngài lại đi bộ đến chùa Tú Lâm ở ngọn An Kỳ Sanh.

Rhythmic Proses
Living Amid Dust and Enjoying the Way
Phú
Cư Trần Lạc Đạo Phú

FIRST SESSION

I sit in the city, feel like a monk in mountains and forests, see all karma calming down, and enjoy the peaceful self-nature.
For a half day, the body and mind are free.

The river of desire and attachment dries out;
I don’t remember any beloved gem or precious jewelry.
The sound of right and wrong becomes quiet;
I now hear unrestrictedly the swallows chattering and the robins singing.

Many people enjoy boating on clear rivers; others, hiding in green mountains.
Everybody sees that the cherry flowers are pink and the willow trees are green;
however, only a few realize the true color.

The silver moon, with its blue light, shines brightly all over the river of meditation.
The sun of wisdom lights up all things --
the gentle willow trees, and the beautiful flowers.

If you want to fly, just change your bones and ask for the medication from deities.
If you want longevity, just go to heaven where they are making the elixir of life.

Though I read the Book of Changes for pleasure, I treasure the bright nature of the mind more than all the jewelry.
Since I read and appreciate the Buddhist Scriptures, I cherish the mind of no-thought more than all the gold.

HỘI THỨ NHẤT

Mình ngồi thành thị;
Nết dụng sơn lâm.
Muôn nghiệp lặng an nhàn thể tính;
Nửa ngày rồi tự tại thân tâm.

Tham ái nguồn dừng,
chẳng còn nhớ châu yêu ngọc quý;
Thị phi tiếng lặng,
được dầu nghe yến thốt oanh ngâm.

Chơi nước biếc, ẩn non xanh,
nhân gian có nhiều người đắc ý;
Biết đào hồng, hay liễu lục,
thiên hạ năng mấy chủ tri âm.

Nguyệt bạc vừng xanh,
soi mọi chỗ thiền hà lai láng;
Liễu mềm hoa tốt,
ngất quần sinh tuệ nhật sâm lâm.

Lo hoán cốt, ước phi thăng,
đan thần mới phục;
Nhắm trường sinh, về thượng giới,
thuốc thỏ còn đam.

Sách Dịch xem chơi,
yêu tính sáng yêu hơn châu báu;
Kinh nhàn đọc dấu,
trọng lòng rồi trọng nữa hoàng kim.

SECOND SESSION

Just know that!
Just realize the mind; There is no other way.
This is the way to calm the mind: keep the bright nature of mindfulness.
Stop the false thoughts; just watch the thoughts fade away unmistakenly.
When not a thought of self and others arises in your mind, you will see the true appearance of the diamond mind.
When not a thought of greed and hatred arises in your mind, you will see clearly the mind of perfect enlightenment.

The Pure Land is the pure mind.
Don’t be doubtful, don’t ask for the direction to the west.
Amitabha is the bright nature of the mind.
Thus, you don’t need to work hard to come to the Land of Great Bliss.

Be mindful of your body and mind,
train yourself to live in the nature of mindfulness, and don’t boast in any way.
Keep the strict morality, fight against the impermanence, and don’t cling to fame and wealth.

Eat fruits and vegetables, fear the karma of eating, and don’t be picky about foods despite its bitter or spicy flavor.
Wear simple fabrics, be mindful of the body,
and don’t be anxious about clothes despite its black or white color.

If you live happily with morality, one half of your hut will be more precious than any heavenly palace.
If you cherish constantly the kindness and righteousness, three pieces of tile from your roof are more admirable than any castle.

HỘI THỨ HAI

Biết vậy!
Miễn được lòng rồi;
Chẳng còn phép khác.
Gìn tính sáng tính mới hầu an;
Nén niềm vọng, niềm dừng chẳng thác.
Dứt trừ nhân ngã, thì ra tướng thực kim cương;
Dừng hết tham sân, mới lảu lòng màu viên giác.

Tịnh độ là lòng trong sạch,
chớ còn ngờ hỏi đến Tây phương;
Di Đà là tính sáng soi,
mựa phải nhọc tìm về Cực lạc.

Xét thân tâm, rèn tính thức,
há rằng mong quả báo phô khoe;
Cầm giới hạnh, địch vô thường,
nào có sá cầu danh bán chác.

Ăn rau ăn trái,
nghiệp miệng chẳng hiềm thuở đắng cay;
Vận giấy vận sồi, thân căn có ngại chi đen bạc.

Nhược chỉn vui bề đạo đức,
nửa gian lều quý nữa thiên cung;
Dầu hay mến thuở nhân nghì,
ba phiến ngói yêu hơn lầu gác.

THIRD SESSION

If you know the mind,
then all the misconducts become empty,
and the practice has no obstacles.

Treasure the bright nature of the mind, and don’t go astray; Study and practice yourself, always on the right way.
Buddha is the mind; just ask for the response from Ma To.
Ignore all the riches and forms; just learn the behavior from Layman Bang.

Living with the bright nature of the mind,
I cling to nothing, neither any wealth nor Canh Dieu Yen Tu Mountain.
Being mindful of what I see and hear,
I have no thoughts running, and don’t need to sit in San Temple on Dong Mountain.

Those who live amid dust and practice well the way will have the best admirable merits.
Those who live in forests and don’t know the way will have the misfortune of wasting time.

You should vow to find an enlightened master and learn studiously from him; the fruit of bodhi might become ripe in just a night.
It is a rare opportunity to meet an enlightened practitioner; It takes many lifetimes to see an udumbara tree blooming.

HỘI THỨ BA

Nếu mà cốc,
Tội ắt đã không.
Phép học lại thông.

Gìn tính sáng, mựa lạc tà đạo;
Thửa mình học, cho phải chính tông.
Chỉn bụt là lòng, xá ướm hỏi đòi cơ Mã tổ;
Vong tài đối sắc, ắt tìm cho phải thói Bàng công.

Áng tư tài, tính sáng chẳng tham,
há vì ở Cánh Diều Yên Tử ;
Rần thanh sắc niềm dừng chẳng chuyển,
lọ chi ngồi am Sạn non Đông.

Trần tục mà nên, phúc ấy càng yêu hết tấc
Sơn lâm chẳng cốc, họa kia thực cả đồ công.

Nguyền mong thân cận minh sư,
quả bồ đề một đêm mà chín;
Phúc gặp tình cờ tri thức,
hoa ưu đàm mấy kiếp đơm bông.

FOURTH SESSION

Just believe and watch: If you know the one mind, all delusions will be gone.
After transforming the three poisons, you will realize the three bodies.
To cut the shackles from the six senses, you have to tame the six rebels.

If you want to change your bone structure [to become a Taoist immortal], find and learn to make the sacred medicines.
If you ask me about the way of true emptiness, I will say that just neither run away from nor cling to sounds and forms.

Know the true suchness, and believe in the wisdom; hence, you won’t search any more for Buddha in the West or East.
Realize the true appearance, and understand the inaction way; hence, you don’t need to toil to ask for the Zen Classics in the South or North.

Read the teachings from Three Baskets,
follow the rule book of Zen garden,
burn the five kinds of incense,
and don’t need to spend for sandalwood incense.

You are no different from Sakya Buddha, while you cultivate the mind of kindness and righteousness, and practice the way and the virtues.
You are truly Maitreya Bodhisattva, while you keep the precepts, and have no thoughts of envy and desire.

HỘI THỨ TƯ

Tin xem:
Miễn cốc một lòng;
Thì rồi mọi hoặc.
Chuyển tam độc mới chứng tam thân ;
Đoạn lục căn, nên trừ lục tặc.

Tìm đường hoán cốt,
chỉn xá năng phục dược luyện đan;
Hỏi phép chân không,
hề chi lánh ngại thanh chấp sắc.

Biết chân như, tin bát nhã,
chớ còn tìm Phật tổ Tây Đông;
Chứng thực tướng, ngõ vô vi,
nào nhọc hỏi kinh Thiền Nam Bắc.

Xem Tam tạng giáo,
ắt học đòi Thiền uyển thanh quy;
Đốt ngũ phận hương,
chẳng tốn đến chiên đàn chiêm bặc.

Tích nhân nghì, tu đạo đức,
ai hay này chẳng Thích Ca;
Cầm giới hạnh, đoạn xan tham,
chỉn thực ấy là Di Lặc.

FIFTH SESSION

And then you know!
Buddha is in the house;
you don’t need to search afar.
You are looking for Buddha,
because you neglect the source.
When you realize the nature of awareness,
you then will know that Buddha is you.

Once you understand five Zen sentences, then you will know how to relax playfully in the unbounded country.
Once you understand three Buddhist sutras, then you will know how to sit leisurely at the border of the limitless land.

When you practice the way and don’t cling to the senses, you are already sitting in the scripture school and passing through the patriarch gate.
Thus, avoid the right and wrong, cling not to sounds and forms, and beware of turning loose while walking through miles of willow trees and paths of flowers.

Buddha is kind and compassionate;
I vow to be near and learn from him for countless lifetimes.
The Emperor is generous and tolerant;
once you get in his royal court, you will have no past burdens.

Though sewn or patched, the clothes and blankets still keep you warm over the seasons. Though white or brown, the cooked rice and gruel still keep you full or less hungry.

Don’t lock the eight conciousnesses, or depress the eight winds -- the more oppression, the more resistance.
Understand the three mysteries, then expand the three essential principles; after cutting [a piece of diamond], then polishing [it].

The guitar originally has no strings; use it to play the song of the unborn mind.
The flute has no holes; use it to play the song of peace.

Don’t pass up the root to search for the branches; I am very sorry that the elder Cau Chi still has one finger for you to cling to.
Don’t mistake that the reflection in the mirror steals your head; I would laugh at Yajnadatta.
Once you get in the diamond cage, you will know that the practice is not hard; then safely, you can swallow the bamboo prickles.

HỘI THỨ NĂM

Vậy mới hay!
Bụt ở cong nhà;
Chẳng phải tìm xa.
Nhân khuấy bổn nên ta tìm bụt;
Đến cốc hay chỉn bụt là ta.

Thiền ngỏ năm câu, nằm nhãng cong quê Hà hữu;
Kinh xem ba biến, ngồi ngơi mái quốc Tân la.

Trong đạo nghĩa, khoáng cơ quan,
đà lọt lẫn trường kinh cửa tổ;
Lánh thị phi, ghê thanh sắc,
ngại chơi bời dặm liễu đường hoa.

Đức bụt từ bi,
mong nhiều kiếp nguyền cho thân cận;
Ơn Nghêu khoáng cả,
lọt toàn thân phô việc đã tha.

Áo miễn chăn đầm ấm qua mùa,
hoặc chằm hoặc xể;
Cơm cùng cháo đói no đòi bữa,
dầu bạc dầu thoa.

Ngăn bát thức,
nén bát phong, càng đè càng bội;
Lẫy tam huyền,
nong tam yếu, một cất một ma.

Cầm vốn thiếu huyền,
xá đàn dấu xoang vô sinh khúc;
Địch chăng có lỗ,
cũng bấm chơi xướng thái bình ca.

Lẫy cội tìm cành,
còn khá tiếc Câu Chi trưởng lão;
Khuấy đầu chấp bóng,
ắt kham cười Diễn Nhã Đạt Đa.
Lọt quyền Kim cương,
há mặt hầu thông nên nóng
Nuốt bồng lật cứt, nào tay phải xước tượng da.

SIXTH SESSION

That’s true!
Live with the empty mind; thus, you will naturally enter the way. Once the three karmas stop, your body and mind will be peaceful.
Once you attain the one mind, you will understand the patriarch’s teachings.

Beware that only stray Zen folks grasp the texts and dig for meanings, and see that only skillful monks can realize the principle and knows how to live the way.
Asking about the unholy and the holy? I now say that the rain leaks through fabric curtains, and bounces away from the walls.
Asking about the great vehicle and the small one? I now say frankly and briefly that one is a string to thread through the coins, and other a rope to pull up a bucket of water from the well.

Realize that the mind is shining bright constantly; hence, don’t worry about when the time comes for you to enter the way.
Just nurture the bright nature of the mirror continuously; hence, don’t be disturbed by the senses and their objects.

If the gold still has impurities from the ore,
you have to cast it nine more times, and forge it nine more times.
Thus, all the wealth can not make a thought of desire arising from you, who lives happily with simple meals, though vegetables or gruel.

Those who keep all the precepts purely in mind and in appearance are the bodhisattvas adorning the universe.
Those who serve the king loyally and their parents respectfully are the virtuous persons.

You, the meditators, have to be selective about good friends for whom you are willing to die to repay their assistance.
You, learners of the way, have to revere the masters to whom you have no ways to return the gratitude even if your bones are crushed and ground.

HỘI THỨ SÁU

Thật thế!
Hãy xá vô tâm;
Tự nhiên hợp đạo.
Dừng tam nghiệp mới lặng thân tâm;
Đạt một lòng thì thông tổ giáo.

Nhận văn giải nghĩa,
rạc rài nên Thiền khách bơ vơ;
Chứng lý tri cơ, cứng cát phải nạp tăng khôn khéo.
Han hữu lậu, han vô lậu,
bảo cho hay: the lọt, duộc thưng;
Hỏi Đại thừa, hỏi Tiều thừa,
thưa thẳng tắt: lòi tiền, tơ gáo.

Nhận biết làu làu lòng vốn,
chẳng ngại bề thời tiết nhân duyên;
Dồi cho vặc vặc tính gương,
nào có nhuốm căn trần huyên náo,

Vàng chửa hết quặng,
xá tua chín phen đúc chín phen rèn;

nội ngoại nên Bồ tát trang nghiêm;
Ngay thờ chúa, thảo thờ cha,
đi đỗ mới trượng phu trung hiếu.

Tham thiền kén bạn,
nát thân mình mới khá hồi ân;
Học đạo thờ thầy,
lọt xương óc chưa thông của báo.

SEVENTH SESSION

Thus, that’s true!
The more you practice, the more you know that Buddhist teachings are very precious.
When ignorance is gone, you will see the mind essence more clearly.
When affliction disappears, you will immerse in the way and morality.

Read the sutra inside your heart, then you will see the traces of Buddha’s words.
Study the responses from patriarchs, then you will know it’s not hard to enter the way.
Realize the root of mind, wash away all worldly circumstances, and don’t let even an inch of dust remain. Knock down the flagpole, know and see completely, and don’t let any affliction linger in mind.

Kindle the flame of enlightenment, and burn down the forest of false views from the past.
Wield the sword of wisdom, and sweep away all the passions now still hovering.
Be grateful to Buddha, hold dear your parents, revere the masters and learn the way.
Appreciate Lord Gautama, eat no animals, keep the precepts and be vegetarian.

To cherish his kindness, vow to be near and learn from him for countless lifetimes.
To show gratitude for being saved, prefer to die a million times bitterly than to live without the Dharma.
In case you uphold righteousness and live in the way constantly, you are truly good even if you have only incense and flowers for offering.
In case your words proclaim the faith and your mind has no morality, you are really bad even if you present offerings of gold and jewels.

HỘI THỨ BẢY

Vậy mới hay.
Phép bụt trọng thay;
Rèn mới cốc hay.
Vô minh hết bồ đề thêm sáng;
Phiền não rồi đạo đức càng say.

Xem phỏng lòng kinh,
lời bụt thốt dễ cho thấy dấu;
Học đòi cơ tổ,
xá thiền không khôn chút biết nay (nơi).
Cùng căn bản, rửa trần duyên,
mựa để mấy hào ly đương mặt;
Ngã thắng chàng, viên tri kiến,
chớ cho còn họa giữa cong tay.

Buông lửa giác ngộ,
đốt hoại thảy rừng tà ngày trước;
Cầm kiếm trí tuệ,
quét cho không tính thức thuở nay.
Vâng ơn Thánh, xót mẹ cha, thờ thầy học đạo;
Mến đức Cồ, kiêng bùi ngọt, cầm giới ăn chay.

Cảm đức từ bi, để nhiều kiếp
nguyền cho thân cận;
Đội ơn cứu độ, nát muôn thân
thà chịu đắng cay.
Nghĩa hãy nhớ, đạo chẳng quên,
hương hoa cúng xem còn nên thảo;
Miệng rằng tin, lòng lại lỗi,
vàng ngọc thờ cũng chửa hết ngay.

EIGHTH SESSION

Thus, that’s true!
Practice skilfully, and never quit learning.
Shake away the consciousness, and don’t let it grasp on the mind.
Be patient to watch the false thoughts fade away, and don’t let any of them hover around.

Those who get drunk with power and fame are all naïve persons.
Those who gather merit and wisdom are all truly knowers.

Build bridges and roads, enhance temples and shrines, adorn the world outside, and practice with the actual phenomena.
Hunt for the mind of joy and detachment, nurture the mind of kindness and compassion, attain liberation in mind, and constantly read the sutra inside your heart.

Tame your mind to become a Buddha, and toil to polish it constantly;
Just like rinsing sand to find gold, you have to pick and choose so many times.

Read Buddha’s words, investigate patriarchs’ words, and practice the teachings all along.
Revere Buddha, cultivate yourself, and avoid any error though as slight as a thread of silk or a strand of hair.

Understand all the dharma sayings; hence, not a thought of fear would arise in your mind.
Guard your senses skilfully; hence, the eight winds would not make you move.

HỘI THỨ TÁM

Chưng ấy:
Chỉn xá tua rèn;
Chớ nên tuyệt học.
Lay ý thức chớ chấp chằng chằng;
Nén niềm vọng mựa còn xóc xóc.

Công danh mảng đắm,

Dựng cầu đò, dồi chiền tháp,

Săn hỷ xả, nhuyễn từ bi,
nội tự tại kinh Lòng hằng đọc.

Rèn lòng làm bụt, chỉn xá tua một sức dồi mài;
Đãi cát kén vàng, còn lại phải nhiều phen lựa lọc.

Xem kinh đọc lục,
làm cho bằng thửa thấy thửa hay;
Trọng bụt tu thân, dùng mựa lỗi một tơ một tóc.

Cùng nơi ngôn cú,
chỉn chăng hề một phút ngại lo;
Rất thửa cơ quan,
mựa còn để tăm hơi lọt lọc.

NINTH SESSION

Thus, now I tell you.
The teaching methods used by patriarchs are very different, but they will lead you to the same gate. If you talk only about the days after Ma To, then you miss a previous incident when Bodhidharma met Luong Vu De.

“The merit from good deeds are all empty.” Those who don’t realize that meaning are all clinging to delusions and making more mistakes. Since the words “vast emptiness” and “don’t know” were spoken, they have been echoing in the ears of ignorant persons.

Bodhidharma was born in India, died in Shaolin Temple, and pretended to be buried at the foot of the Hung Nhi Mountain.
Some generations later, a poem was written on a wall of that temple, saying that the human body was the bodhi tree and that the mind was a luminous mirror.

The elder Vuong wielded a sword and killed a cat, clearing all doubtful thoughts about the head monk. The Zen Master Tu Ho pretended to whistle his dog to test the responses from younger generations.

The rice at Lu Lang Market was very expensive; nobody was allowed to haggle.
The walkways in Thach Dau’s monastery were so slippery; it was hard to come there to ask for the way.

Pha Tao took down the banners, trampling divine signs to save the Kitchen God.
Cau Chi moved a finger, using the old style from his master.

Lam Te’s sword and Bi Ma’s crutch were handled freely to show the way for the asking monks.
Doan’s lion and Huu’s buffalo appeared to warn the arrogant Buddhists.

Lifting a fan and moving a bamboo rod were all means to see whether the learners had understood.
Throwing a ball or handing a dipper was just a means for dharma friends to show the understanding.

Thuyen Tu moved a paddle, while the time had not come yet for the green river to take him in for purification. Dao Ngo swung a tablet, while the ghosts confused him with a weird spirit.
Van Yen’s dragon swallowed the universe, scaring the observers.
Nghia Ton’s snake lay across the world, spreading rumors afar.

The cypress is the mind; don’t mistake that for the eastern direction.
The boy Binh Dinh is fire; don’t mistake that for the northern direction.

Despite that Trieu Chau served tea and Thieu Duong gave cakes, many Zen practitioners still feel hungry. Despite having rice fields in Tao Khe and gardens in Thieu That, the monks still leave them untamed now.

Long ago a monk got enlightenment when dropping a bundle of firewood or when kindling a flame of a lamp; that was because he had absorbed a great doubt for the truth.
Long ago a monk got enlightenment when seeing the cherry flower or when hearing a pebble striking a bamboo tree; that was because he had calmly watched his senses for long.

HỘI THỨ CHÍN

Vậy cho hay:

Gieo bó củi, nẩy bông đèn, nhân mang mới nết;
Lộc đào hoa, nghe tiếng trúc, mặc vẻ mà sang.

TENTH SESSION

The patriarchs all realized the one emptiness,
despite that they had different personal traits.
The responses from patriarchs hide no secrets;
It is just that your mind has something to cling to and get trapped in.

The monks from Hinayana could not understand well, despite that Buddha did not separate the perfect nirvana from an illusory citadel.
The bodhisattvas realized the way and attained liberation, despite whether they lived in forests or in the city.

Wild mountains and serene forests are places where the recluses enjoy living.
Quiet temples and peaceful shrines are scenes where the practitioners go strolling.

Those riding high horses under large sunshades would not win the respect from Hell Master.
Those living in jewel palaces or in golden castles would meet many beloved persons in hell.

Desiring power and fame, and clinging to the sense of self and others are the thoughts that keep people unenlightened.
Living in the way and morality, and transforming body and mind are the works that make people enlightened.

While the eyebrows are horizontal, the nose is vertical;
Human faces are different, but have the same structural principle.
While the holy watch, the unholy play with thoughts;
The distance is thousands of miles away.

Thus, hear the following poem.

Living amid dust and enjoying the way,
you should let all things take their course.
When hungry, just eat; when tired, just sleep.
The treasure is in your house; don’t search any more.
Face the scenes, and have no thoughts;
then you don’t need to ask for Zen.

HỘI THỨ MƯỜI

Tượng chúng ấy,
Cốc một chân không;
Dùng đòi căn khí.
Nhân lòng ta vướng chấp khôn thông;
Há cơ tổ nay còn thửa bí.

Chúng Tiểu thừa cốc hay chữa đến,
Bụt xá ngăn Bảo sở hóa thành;

Núi hoang rừng quạnh,

Ngựa cao tán cả,
Diêm vương nào kể đứa nghênh ngang;
Gác ngọc lầu vàng,

Chuộng công danh, lồng nhân ngã,

Say đạo đức, dời thân tâm,

Mày ngang mũi dọc,

Mắt thánh lòng phàm,

Kệ rằng:

Cư trần lạc đạo thả tùy duyên
Cơ tắc xan hề khốn tắc miên
Gia trung hữu bảo hưu tầm mích
Đối cảnh vô tâm mạc vấn thiền

(Ở đời vui đạo, hãy tùy duyên,
Đói cứ ăn đi mệt ngủ liền.
Trong nhà có báu thôi tìm kiếm,
Đối cảnh vô tâm, chớ hỏi thiền.)

Making a Song of Enlightenment While Enjoying Forests And Streams

Being born as a human is a misfortune.
Those who know that are the ones who truly know.
I feel happy with myself for living here these days, and laugh out loudly for seeing my wish fulfilled.

I cling neither to power and fame, nor to wealth and nobility.
The Tan and Han dynasties rose to become the most powerful, and later fell apart.
I now live as a poor person, have a place to cultivate myself, hide my traces on this high mountain, and stay among the wild.

The monkeys happily murmur, making friends with me.
The forest is so serene, while my body and mind fill with joy and cling to nothing.
Living leisurely and having nothing in my mind, I clean the altar, revere Buddha and heavenly beings, and keep the lamps and incense lit everyday.

Chanting sutras and reflecting on Buddha, I vow to express thankfulness to the three realms of beings and the four debts of gratitude.
My mind is clear and serene, and I see the nature of awareness is shining bright.
There is no more here and there, self and others.

Dropping all worldly circumstances,
I see beyond the right and wrong.
Taming the one mind,
I keep watching day and night.
Sitting in this world,
I don’t mind the change.
Living in the serene forests,
I let my mind relax peacefully.

I vow to follow the Buddhas,
get complete enlightenment,
sing the unborn song,
stay in meditation and attain liberation.

Everybody should know that this world is just a dream;
your tears will flow compasionately,
when you wake up and see the dream is over.

Know that your body is illusory as a floating cloud, and that all things are emptiness as bubbles on the sea surface.

You should come to live in a serene forest,
wear simple clothes, and practice the way heedfully.

Don’t pay attention to what people do though good or bad deeds.
Close your mouth and seal your ears;
All things outside the way are all adversities.

Find a quiet place to live and mature your dharma life;
The right time will come, and you will see the law of cause and effect fulfilled.
Be compassionate and willing to save other beings, even if you have to cut your flesh to feed birds and fish.

Do not care much for your body, despite some meals leave you hungry and some keep you full.

See that earth, water, fire and wind are transforming your body constantly, while the dharma body is eternally dwelling, is truly the entire universe, is clearly before your eyes, and is shining perfection.

The Zen teachings ask you to see the way right in front of your eyes, and to realize that the sounds you hear are all echoes coming through an empty cave.

There are countless learners, but only a few, perhaps one or two, would know how to transform a bamboo tree into a dragon.

I point to the north direction, and you wrongly turn to the south.
That is because your mind is unclear.
When you attain the Zen of one finger, it takes just a moment to clear everything.

Now hear my poem.

I live in a serene place,
and see the mind liberated.
The cool wind is seeping
through the shade of cypress trees.
Sitting on a Zen bed beneath a tree,
I read a sutra.
The two words “leisure time” are
more precious than ten thousand gold bars.

Đắc Thú Lâm Tuyền Thành Đạo Ca

Sinh có nhân thân,
Ấy là họa cả;
Ai hay cốc được,

Xem đà hèn hạ.
Yên bề phận khó,
Kiếm chốn dưỡng thân;
Khuất tịch non cao,
Náu mình sơn dã.

Vượn mừng hủ hỷ,
Làm bạn cùng ta;
Vắng vẻ ngàn kia,
Thân lòng hỷ xả.
Thanh nhàn vô sự,
Quét tước đài hoa;
Thờ phụng bụt trời,
Đêm ngày hương hỏa.

Ta nguyền được bả.

Lành người chẳng chớ.
Dữ người chẳng hay;
Ngậm miệng đắp tai,
Hề chi họa cả.

An thân lập mệnh.
Thời tiết nhân duyên;

Dầu là chim cá.

Thân này chẳng quản.

Poems Thơ
1

SEEING A SCENE

The frosting season is gone.
It’s time to bring out the spring clothes.
The Qingming Festival comes today.
Like jewels of ruby, the steamed rice rolls lie fully on the tray, preparing for an ancient Vietnamese custom.

1

TỨC SỰ

Xong múa Giá chi thử áo xuân,
Hôm nay huống gặp tiết thanh minh.
Đầy mâm bánh cuốn như hồng ngọc
Phong tục từ xưa của Việt Nam.

2

FAREWELL TO THE TWO CHINESE ENVOYS, LY TRONG TAN AND TIEU PHUONG MAI

Linh Tri is far away; the farewell party stays warm in memory.
The spring breeze now can not hold your horsewhips.
You have come as the two envoys, and become the two stars of merit that still brighten our southern sky for days.

2

TIỄN SỨ BẮC LÝ TRỌNG TÂN
TIÊU PHƯƠNG MAI

Thăm thẳm Linh Trì ấm tiệc đưa
Người về khôn cách gió xuân ngừa.
Nào hay sao sứ hai ngôi phúc,
Sáng rọi trời Nam mây tối bưa.

3

FAREWELL TO THE TWO CHINESE ENVOYS, MA HOP AND KIEU NGUYEN LANG

You two star envoys have brightened the southern sky,
drawing an entourage of light three rounds a night.
With deep gratitude and affection to your country,
we customarily make humble offerings.
Your mandarin flags now raise and fly; I wish you healthy.
Your horsewhips lash the spring breeze now, and your horses will bring both of you home safely.
Remember my words of loyalty, and my concern to promote harmony between our countries.

3

TIỄN SỨ BẮC MA HỢP
KIỀU NGUYÊN LÃNG

Trời nam, sao sứ rọi hai ngôi
Dẫn lối ba vòng đêm sáng soi
Bên ấy ơn sâu tình dễ cảm
Nơi đây tục bạc lễ thẹn tồi
Mù xông cờ tiết thân mừng khỏe
Roi vút gió xuân ngựa kết đôi
Trung thống vạc lời xin hãy nhớ
Nỗi lo đất nước khỏi nung sôi

4

RESPONDING POEM TO KIEU NGUYEN LANG

With a luggage of light clouds, the spring just comes to the southern mountain, scatters some flowers on the ‘mai’ plants, and reveals the imperial virtue everyplace.
Living in this world, I would feel ashamed if not helping the people.
With head still looking back, you trot the horse amid snow and fog.
Stopping the caravan sometimes, you gaze at mountains and rivers.
Tomorrow, the Nhi River will disappear behind the smoky fog.
Let’s have a toast of red wine, fresh and cool, to purify the mind.

4

HỌA THƠ KIỀU NGUYÊN LÃNG

Non nam hành lý nhẹ mây tưng
Xuân đến cành mai mới mấy bông
Khắp thấy cùng thương thiên tử đức
Sống không giúp thế trượng phu buồn
Ngựa xông sương tuyết đầu còn ngoái
Mắt ngắm non sông xe chút ngừng
Sông Nhị ngày mai mờ khói nước
Rượu đào tươi mát rửa lòng trong.

5

EARLY FLOWERS ON THE MAI PLANT(1)

Reflecting in water, a flower with five yellow petals circling around shows its beauty among the coral reefs.
After three winters of wearing white, the branch now boasts an early flower, and stands as a stick of incense to welcome the spring.
The floral nectar perfumes, and gets sober butterflies drunk.
The night light gleams watery, and makes sad birds thirsty.
If the Moon Lady’s ever come to this land of beautiful flowers, she would have stayed here forever, and abandoned all the cold palaces on the moon.

5

HOA MAI SỚM(1)

Vàng điểm tua hoa năm cánh tròn
San hô chìm bóng vẩy phô tuôn
Ba đông cành trắng hoa khoe trước
Một nén hương xuân nhánh hãy còn
Cam lộ ngát thơm say bướm tỉnh
Dạ quang tựa nước khát chim buồn
Hằng nga nếu biết đây hoa đẹp
Quế lạnh cung Thiềm thôi ở luôn.

6

EARLY FLOWERS ON THE MAI PLANT (2)

It’s cold outside; I have not stepped over the door for five days.
The breeze from previous springs now comes back to the old tree.
From broken ice pieces, the reflections sparkle on the water.
Seeing flowers swaying at the branches, I forget to boil the water for tea.
The moon comes to this mountain village, and sinks along with a Vietnamese song.
A cloud hovers over the border, and still soaks in Chinese flute melody.
A branch of flowers has strayed to my dream about you;
After waking up, I wish I would have given it to you.

6

HOA MAI SỚM(2)

Ngại rét năm ngày cửa biếng ra
Gió xuân trước đã đến cây già
Bóng giăng mặt nước băng vừa vỡ
Hoa trĩu đầu cành ấm chửa pha
Xóm núi trăng chìm lời hát Việt
Ải quan mây đẫm tiếng tiêu Hồ
Một cành lạc tới giấc mơ bạn
Tỉnh dậy tặng người chẳng nỡ đưa

7

THE SCENE OF SPRING

The birds sing playfully, and the willow flowers bloom.
Who is painting a changing shade of floating clouds on my front yard?
A guest comes, leans against the balcony, gazes at mountains and clouds,
and asks none about worldly things.

7

CẢNH XUÂN

Chim hót nhởn nhơ, hoa liễu dày,
Bóng thềm nhà vẽ mây chiều bay
Chuyện đời khách đến thôi không hỏi
Cùng tựa lan can ngắm núi mây.

8

JOINING A BANQUET WITH HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS VAN TUC VUONG

The cooks brought out reddish boiled turtle feet and amber-colored fried horse steaks.
Being a mountain monk who kept strictly the code of discipline, I did not share the meal though I sat at the same table with His Royal Highness.

8

DỰ YẾN VỚI VĂN TÚC VƯƠNG

Chân rùa bóc đỏ mọng
Yên ngựa nướng vàng thơm
Sơn tăng giữ giới sạch
Cùng ngồi chẳng cùng ăn

9

THAN QUANG PAGODA ON DAI LAM MOUNTAIN

On this high and vast realm, Than Quang Pagoda shows the sense of serenity.
Away from the sky, the moon stops here for a visit.
A dozen palaces appear just like in a painting.
Three thousand worlds come into sight of the poetic eyes.
Life changes constantly, just like the cloud flakes are forming a blue dog.
While the cypress trees don’t know about years and months, the monk’s head already turns white.
Burning incense and bowing to the Buddha are few things I do.
All thinking does not cling to me anymore.

9

CHÙA THẦN QUANG TRÊN NÚI ĐẠI LÃM

Bát ngát Thần quang gợi tịch u
Trời trăng ôm cởi đến ngao du
Lâu đài một tá bày tranh vẽ
Thế giới ba ngàn lọt mắt thơ
Lắm đỗi thói đời mây thương cẩu
Đâu hay tùng cỗi trắng đầu sư
Thắp hương lễ Phật trừ đôi việc
Hết thảy suy tư mặc bỏ lờ.

10

A POEM FOR THE LAKE COTTAGE IN FRONT OF PHO MINH PAGODA

After thousands of incense sticks burning, the cottage now is full of fragrance.
A flow of cool waves rises around.
The temple gate hides in the shadow of an old fig tree.
Listen to the rise of cicada sound, and realize the profound meaning of autumn.

10

ĐỀ NHÀ THỦY TẠ CHÙA PHỔ MINH

Xông hết nghìn hương thơm ngát nhà,
Mới dâng dòng nước mát đâu xa
Cửa chùa dưới bóng đa già khép
Đầu tiếng ve thu ý đậm đà

11

AN AFTERNOON AT THIEN TRUONG

Here and there,
the villages are like smoke fading.
Half gone and half visible,
an afternoon is sinking.
The buffaloes arrive home,
and the herdboy’s flute song vanishes.
Pair after pair, the storks land on the field.

11

NGẮM CẢNH CHIỀU THIÊN TRƯỜNG

Thôn trước thôn sau tựa khói nhòa
Nửa không nửa có mé chiều sa
Mục đồng sáo vẳng trâu về hết,
Cò trắng từng đôi ruộng xuống sà.

12

THE WESTWARD CONQUEST

The brocade sail flies along the wind, and the whitewater waves spring up flowers.
Sitting on the deck and feeling so tired, the soldiers don’t bother to turn their heads.
The afternoon clouds hover on Tam Giap, where none of the geese comes.
The bright moon shines Cuu Than, where the dragons still stay around.
So cold is the path leading to the old dream palace in which sorrows spill over cups of wine.
It is said that the Chinese emperor is drunk with war.
Why should humans be rushing like that?

TRÊN ĐƯỜNG TÂY CHINH

Hoa sóng tung lên buồm gấm bay
Dưới mui đầu mệt chẳng buồn quay
Mây chiều Tam Giáp nhạn không đến
Trăng sáng Cửu Than rồng có đây
Lạnh lẽo đường đi cung mộng cũ

THE MOON

The lamp burns dimly, scattering light on the bamboo bed full of books.
The autumn fog mists the front yard, breathing night air.
Waking up, I don’t know where the sound of pestle coming from --
just only seeing that the moon is rising over a branch of osmanthus flowers.

HIKING ON BAO DAI MOUNTAIN

The land is so quiet,
and the shrine grows more ancient.
Though the days pass,
the spring still looks pale.
Near and far,
the clouds surround the mountain.
Strewn with flowers, the trail
appears under the scattered sunlight.
Throwing a thousand things
of the kingdom over the stream,
I remind myself of the question
on the one-hundred-year life.
Leaning on the balcony,
I lift the gem flute to my lips
while the pure moonlight pours on my dress.

14

Ngực áo, đầy trăng trong.

15

PLUM BLOSSOM

Fearless of the early snow, the plum
blossom stands strong like steel and stone, wearing a simple dress and veil
amidst the winter breeze.
Oh, such a flower -- frugal like Emperor Han Van De, and heroic like Emperor Duong Thai Tong.

While the flowers fall amply on the ground, the spring emerges like a dream.

THE WIFE AT HOME IN SORROW

She gets up, puts aside the curtain, and sees the roses falling.
The yellow warblers don’t sing for feeling bitter with the spring.
Far away from the west balcony,
the sun sets for no reason,
and casts the shadows of
flowers and buds falling east.

AN AFTERNOON IN CHAU LANG

The ancient temple
hides serenely amid the fog.
Floating in the quiet afternoon,
a fishing boat listens to the bell tolling.
A white seabird flies around, as the river and mountain stay calm.
The breeze stands still, the clouds shift, and the trees appear with few red leaves.

THE LATE SPRING

When I were young, I did not understand the existence and the emptiness.
Now the spring flowers bloom, and I am blissful to see clearly the face of the spring.
From the Zen bed, sitting on a grass mat, I keep watching the falling roses.

VISITING THE ROYAL TOMB CHIEU LANG IN A SPRING DAY

The old white-haired soldiers are still here,

THE THIEN TRUONG DISTRICT

So much lonely is this place -- with a few red among mostly green.
The clouds are gone, the rain disappears, and some bits of mud scatter around.
After the dharma lecture, the monks leave the hall and go back to the temple.
At the first watch of the night, the moon already hangs high over the harbor station, shows thirty palaces of the immortal, and reflects the shades of eight thousand towers.
The scene at Pho Minh Temple is the same as old times.
I still see my royal father’s face in dreams, and on the walls.

AT THE MOUNTAIN COTTAGE, FEELING INSPIRED(1)

Nobody ties you; why do you ask for liberation?
Once having no worldy thoughts, you don’t need to search for the holy.
The monkeys are relaxing; the horses, tired; and the humans, old.
The cottage in the clouds looks like years ago, and so does the Zen stupa.

AT THE MOUNTAIN COTTAGE, FEELING INSPIRED(2)

The right and wrong in my mind are falling off alongside the flowers in the morning.
Fame and wealth are chilled in my mind like the rains last night.
The flowers are dying; the rains, gone; and the mountains, serene.
A bird chirps a sound, and the spring is leaving again.

A POEM TO CHINESE ENVOY LY TU DIEN

The Chinese Emperor showers rains of kindness on every place.
A phoenix emerges from red clouds and
holds at its beak a red royal proclamation.
The peaceful air spreads far to this newly cultivated land, joining the heavenly river to wash away the dirt of war.
Everyone says that despite the imperial letter has only ten lines, it sounds much better than the musical harmony from a five-string guitar.
The love from heaven and earth does not discriminate against north or south.
Why should we worry about the tough road under thunder and storm?

Zen Conversations

At the beginning of a dharma session, Tran Nhan Tong burnt incense, commemorated Buddha’s grace, then stepped onto stage. After a lead monk struck a gong, Tran Nhan Tong said, “Gautama Buddha came to this world for a great cause, preaching and moving his mouth for forty-nine years; however, not a word was spoken. For you all now, I come to this stage; what should I talk?”

After staying silent for some moments, he recited the following poem.

Your body is like a breath entering and leaving the nose.
Life is like a cloud flowing with the wind over a mountain.
Can you hear that a swamphen is crying and see that the moon is shining?
If you think that is something normal, you are losing the springtime.

Tran Nhan Tong hit the table once, then said, “There is nothing here? Come out, come out.”

***

A monk asked, “What is Buddha?”
He replied, “To accept just like ancient times is to go wrong.”
“What is Dharma?”
He replied, “To accept just like ancient times is to go wrong.”
“What is Sangha?”
He replied, “To accept just like ancient times is to go wrong.”
The monk asked again, “How is the ultimate?”

He replied, “I already gave you all eight words, and have nothing more to tell you.”

The monk asked, “What is the way upward?”
He replied, “Just like raising a stick to poke the sun and the moon.”

The monk asked, “Why do you use the old koan?”
He replied, “Each time recollected, each time it’s renewed.”
The monk asked, “What is the special transmission outside the scriptures?”
He replied, “A frog can not jump higher than its head.”
The monk said, “After jumping higher than its head, then…”
He replied, “…then following other frogs to jump into muddy swamps.”
The monk said, “Still jumping inside, not outside the ring.”

Tran Nhan Tong shouted loudly, “You, a blind guy! What do you see?”
The monk said, “Why does a great virtuous master like you now deceive people?”

Tran Nhan Tong uttered, “Hum, hum.”
While the monk was thinking, Tran Nhan Tong reached out to hit him.
The monk was still pondering.

Tran Nhan Tong shouted out loudly.
The monk shouted back.

Tran Nhan Tong said, “I was shouted at by you – once, and twice. How is the ultimate? Say quick now, say quick now!”

The monk pondered long.

Tran Nhan Tong gave a shout, then said, “Devious wild fox! You are just full of slyness. Where is it now?”

The monk bowed and moved back.

***

A monk asked, “Dear Master, you have practiced diligently for many years; among the six powers of Buddha, how many do you posess now?”

Tran Nhan Tong said, “I also have the six powers.”

Monk said, “Not saying about the other five powers, I want to ask about the power of knowing other people’s thoughts.”

Tran Nhan Tong said, “Buddha knows all and see all the minds in the whole country.”

The monk raised a closed fist high and said, “Knowing all and seeing all, then you should know what is inside this.”
Tran Nhan Tong said, “It’s like form, and it’s like emptiness; also, it’s neither form nor emptiness.”

Monk said, “Long time ago, a monk asked The Most Reverend Lang Gia, ‘Originally purity… Suddenly there appeared the mountains, rivers and lands. How could that happen?”
Tran Nhan Tong said, “Just like a fishing boat sailing upon the high sea.”

Monk said, “What does that mean?”
Tran Nhan Tong said, “There exists a land beyond the waves and fog; you should skillfully contemplate.”

***

Question (Q): What is the family tradition of past Buddhas?
Answer (A): The forest garden is left lonely, having no keeper; The flowers, white plum and red cherry, bloom naturally.

Q: What is the family tradition of present Buddhas?
A: That family tradion is shown when the whitecaps welcome swallows in the early morning, and when the red cherry trees in the immortal garden get excited with spring breeze.

Q: What is the family tradition of future Buddhas?
A: The beach is waiting for the tides; the sky, for the moon. Upon hearing a flute song echoed from a fishing village, the traveler feels homesick.

Q: What is your family tradition?
A: Covering clouds with a tattered coat, eating porridge in the morning, watering the moon with an old vase, and drinking tea at night.

Q: How could Linh Van, upon seeing the cherry flowers, get enlightened?
A: They bloom and wilt themselves when the seasons come and go. Though being asked, the King of Winter has no words to say.

Q: ‘When you kill a person, don’t blink.’ What does that saying mean?
A: So brave through the whole body for one who kills [a compound personality].

Q: Could a great Buddhist practitioner fall back into the causality circle?
A: Those who scold Buddha with their bloody-bowl mouths and those who chop the Zen forest with their sharp-sword teeth will fall into the lowest hell after death; however, only the great practitioners would see their laughs become the chanting of praises to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.

Q: Hovering over a field, the storks sprinkled a thousand snowflakes.
On a shrub, a yellow songbird appeared as a flower. How was that?
A: Wrong!

Q: Dear great master, please explain to us.
A: Hovering over a field, the storks sprinkled a thousand snowflakes.
On a shrub, a yellow songbird appeared as a flower.

Monk said: Those were my sentences.
A: When you know how the immortality medication was made, you will understand that the sacred pills are truly purple sand.

Q: What is the pure dharma body?
A: A golden chisel drops into lion feces. An ugly man carries a bundle of fragrant incense sticks.

Monk said: Dear Master, I don’t understand.
A: Don’t learn to haggle over the price; Don’t mistakenly laugh at the honest persons.

Q: What is the complete reward body?
A: The eagle flies high in the sky and stops the wind. The dragon’s jewel has the power to make the sea calm, cool and clear.
The monk bowed.

Tran Nhan Tong said: You already has it fully with all merit and power. You now walk tilting, and can not realize that.
Q: What about the countless transformation bodies?
A: The cloud thickening, the fog coming, and the sky hazing – they all are just one inch of water originally appearing in front of your mind.

Monk said: Yes, that is so right.
Tran Nhan Tong said: It is so laughable for those who try to bag home the clouds around the mountainsides. If you do like that, you will go to hell and swallow hot iron balls.
Monk bowed and moved out.

***

Phap Loa said: Talking about mythology and discussing about historiology are all for fun. How could I speak a sentence that is not stuck in words?

Tran Nhan Tong said: The winter wind breezes, and [then you see] the flowers bloom. The chariot moves, and [then you hear] the wheels clatter.

Notifying Phap Loa’s intention to speak, Tran Nhan Tong said: It won’t be useful, despite the bird sings with its bloody beak [and despite you ask constantly for the ultimate secret of Zen]. The western mountain is again covered by the late-afternoon clouds.

Phap Loa said: What about when there is not a cloud in sight for a ten thousand miles?
Tran Nhan Tong said: It rains so hard.

Q: And when the clouds cover the sky for a ten thousand miles?
A: The moon shines bright.

Q: How about the ultimate?
A: Don’t touch that. If you touch that, you will get thirty strokes of the cane.
Q: What is the original face?

Tran Nhan Tong stayed silent briefly, then asked: Do you understand?
Phap Loa said: No.
Tran Nhan Tong hit Phap Loa.

Phap Loa asked: How about the thirty two good marks and eighty good signs [on the physical body of Buddha]?
Tran Nhan Tong said: Those who try to see me via forms and seek me via sounds have embarked on a wrong path; they can not see the Thus Come One.

Phap Loa said: What is Buddha?
Tran Nhan Tong said: Broken rice and bran are all in the same mortar.

Phap Loa said: What is the intention of the patriarch who came from India?
Tran Nhan Tong said: A cake in a painting.

Phap Loa said: What is the core meaning of Buddhism?
Tran Nhan Tong said: In one same tunnel, all the soils have no difference.

Phap Loa said: A monk asked Trieu Chau, “Does a dog have Buddha nature?” Trieu Chau said, “No.” What did that mean?

Tran Nhan Tong said: Salt in the seawater; blue adhesive in the color.

Phap Loa said: Whether we say ‘things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’, both sentences are all vines climbing trees. What did that mean?

Tran Nhan Tong then said the poem below.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
Both sentences would become all vines drying up after the tree falls and leaves bruises on the monk’s head.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
Both sentences would become all leaves flying off to reveal the essence when the autumn wind blows; like flying swords, both have hurt countless people.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
Those sentences create the schools of eternalism and nihilism, making people climb mountains and cross rivers for nothing; it’s just like crushing tiles to search for rice, or pricking into a turtle’s shell to start a fire.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
Say neither existence nor emptiness.
It’s just like marking on your boat at the spot where your sword slipped into the river, or searching for a horse similar to the one described in an ancient book.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
Don’t say none; don’t say both.
It’s just like using snow to make a hat, or like sewing flowers to make shoes.
Don’t hug a tree to wait for a rabbit.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
From old times to now, mistaking the pointing finger for the moon has drowned so many people on the ground.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
Thusness, thusness. The word opens before your eyes, right in front of your nose.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
Peering left or peering right, mouthing words or howling words – only making noise uselessly.

‘Things exist’ or ‘things don’t exist’?
Anxiety comes along with them.
Just cut off the vines, then live happily ever after.

Tran Nhan Tong then moved out.

Postscript

After Buddha, not a word should be spoken, because his dharma talks are still echoing now.
Thus, the Zen patriarchs spoke only words of silence, and made so many gestures to illustrate the meanings of Buddha’s words.

Seeing the flower from Buddha’s hand, the patriarchs jumped into the ring, danced in four directions, laughed in unison, and all pointed fingers to the bloom. If we can not clearly hear Buddha’s words or see the flower being lifted high, we should carefully watch the dharma dance enjoyed by partriarchs to find a path to enter the ring. Especially, just watch Tran Nhan Tong.

The show is beautiful; however, is there truly a path leading to liberation? We see that the patriarchs walked, ran, jumped, danced and hopped onto so many different paths around the flower. So, when we see the maze of footprints left by patriarchs, should we say that that is truly a pathless way?

Tran Nhan Tong replied that Buddha had not spoken a word in forty-nine years. Not a word was spoken, while we still hear now the echoes from Buddha’s dharma talks? That means that we should hear the soundless sound? Tran Nhan Tong then said that the practitioners could not see and hear Buddha via forms and sounds. Does that mean that we can only see and hear Buddha via the formless and the soundless?

What should we do now? Form appears and disappears; sound arises and vanishes; however, we want to enter the realm of undying peace.

Let’s see the form and hear the sound again. The nature of awareness is shining bright, recognizing the form and sound. The form and sound come and go, while the nature of awareness neither comes nor goes. It’s just there, just like the reflecting nature of a clear mirror, and like the echoing nature of an empty hall.

The nature of awareness has no form, so the mirror displays so many different forms; it has no color, so we can see so many different colors around us. Thus, it is formless; ditto, it is soundless.

That is why Tue Trung said, “Just know that all scenes come from your mind. Realizing that the mind and scenes are originally empty, you will see the enlightenment in all places.”

The form appears in the mirror and then disappears, but the reflecting nature of the mirror is still there, serene and clear. The sound arises in the mind and then vanishes, but the nature of awareness is still there, hearing and recognizing. Hence, we can see that Buddha is currently holding the flower, see that the flower is right now being lifted from his hand – from his one hand. Hence, when we see the flower from his one hand, we are hearing the clap of one hand.

The patriarchs saw, and we can see now – not only seeing a flower, but also seeing the nature of awareness; ditto with the sound.

The flower is being lifted high, the bird is flying and the cloud is floating; however, they all are originally empty, and truly motionless. When we realize that all things come from the mind, then we will see in all places the realm of motionless peace, in which there is no such thing as time or suffering.

Thus, we can see the flower and hear the clap of one hand when we feel and interact via first impressions from the choiceless awareness, which behaves like the reflecting nature of a mirror and like the echoing nature of an empty hall.

When we hear a bird singing, the first impression does not show us where the melody comes from. When we hear and just hear only, we don’t make any choice that whether we like or dislike the melody, and don’t make any judgement that the melody comes whether from the TV or computer, from the front yard or back yard. When we hear and just hear only, we realize that the melody is manifested in the mind. Each of us would hear the melody differently.

And thus, we know that the melody is the mind being manifested, and know that all things are truly quiet, serene and peaceful.

When we see a bird singing on a tree in a forest, and if not a thought arises, then we see that there is no such thing as the self, and see that we are the bird and that we are the song; we are the entire universe.

Furthermore, if there is nobody around there, if there is nobody there to do the seeing or hearing, the question is that is there any bit of sound? And is there any bit of sound being manifested in mind?

Or should we answer that the four phrases -- existence, nonexistence, both existence and nonexistence, neither existence nor nonexistence – can not be applied?

Similarly, we can also understand Tran Nhan Tong via The Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra, in which Buddha stated that form was emptiness, and that emptiness was form. Thus, we are really living in the realm of emptiness.

Just watch the mind. Before a thought arises, that is the formless emptiness. When a thought arises, a form appears. Before the flower is seen, that is the formless seeing. Before a sound is heard, that is the formless hearing. We are all bathing in the river of form and emptiness. The water in river is the emptiness, and the waves are the forms; they have no difference.

Hence, when seeing, just see and see only; when hearing, just hear and hear only. Live with the nature of awareness – the choiceless awareness. That is when we live with the unborn mind. Just watch the mind, and see the nature of awareness. Tran Nhan Tong said so.

A few words should be added here. The translation might not transfer well, and this humble postscript might be deficient; however, this is the best that the writer can do. If there is any merit in this book, it is due to the Zen Masters in Vietnam, some of whom taught the writer directly and compassionately, while others taught indirectly via their poems and sayings. If any mistake is found in this book, it is the writer’s solely responsibility.

May these words inspire those who want to learn the way of Zen, help those who are praticing, and become a rain of flowers to praise those who have entered the gateless gate.

The End
