Buddhist Sunday School Lessons (Venerable Sumangalo)

This article analyzes transnational linkages among overseas Vietnamese Buddhist temples in Europe, Australia, and Japan through the lens of clerical circulation. Rather than viewing these temples as isolated ethnic religious spaces, it conceptualizes them as locally embedded yet interconnected through monks’ mobility, master–disciple relations, and shared ritual practices. Focusing on a Vietnamese abbot based in Germany, who serves as a key nodal figure in this network, the study draws on multi-sited fieldwork (2023–2025) to argue that inter-temple relations can be understood as a dynamic structure sustained by recurring clerical mobility. By foregrounding clerical circulation, the article presents overseas Vietnamese Buddhist temples as relational actors shaped by both local embeddedness and transnational connectivity, contributing to debates on diaspora and migrant religion.

I am truly honored and delighted to be here today, joining all of you in this meaningful celebration of the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, organized by the Tibet Information Office and the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion. On a personal note, I have had the great fortune to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama six times, twice in Australia and four times in Dharamsala, India, during my pilgrimages leading Vietnamese Buddhist devotees to the sacred sites of the Buddha.

Buddhism in Nepal has a rich and profound history that dates back to the time of the Buddha himself. Nepal, particularly the Kathmandu Valley, has long been a significant center for both Tibetan and Theravada Buddhism. Not only is Nepal the birthplace of the Buddha (in Lumbini), but it is also a region where Buddhist spiritual traditions have flourished for centuries. In this special edition, I focus specifically on Nepalese Buddhism. I explore the historical significance of this ancient tradition, shedding light on the invaluable Buddhist sites scattered across the country.
