TRANSPORTING THE SOUL

(Dharma Talk of  Most Venerable Thich Thai Hoa at Kerry Company, Cebu – the Philippines)

Namo  Sakya Muni Buddha,

Dear Mr. Norway, Director of  the company and the staff of Kerry Company at Cebu city, the Philippines,

Today is January 22, 2017, we the Vietnamese Buddhist delegation have pleasure to be invited to your company office so as to pray for peace and happiness for the whole company. On this occasion, I would like to share with you steps of mindfulness that bring peace and happiness for all of us at this moment. Before practicing this, please pay attention to the following points:

  1. When we start walking in mindfulness, our heel touches ground first, and we are aware of embracing the whole foot. When we lift up our feet we realize clearly that we are lifting up our foot. When we place our feet down, we realize very clearly that we are placing it down.
  2. When we walk, we are fully aware of every step we lift up or place down, and we only focus our mind on this, and only on this.
  3. We put the thumb of our left and right hands into the palm of the hands and the remaining four fingers fold up around the thumbs, neither too tight nor too loose. Thanks to this, we can concentrate our mind and thought more on each step we walk.

Please practice walking with us now.

After finishing the steps of mindfulness, we would like to share with you some points necessary for the transport of goods in your company, which are as follows:

  1. Substance of wisdom: Our company is the company of transporting goods from this place to another, from this country to another.  We do not only transport physical goods, but we also transport our understanding to people of different social backgrounds and to all of our partners, so that this way of transport enables them to understand who they are, what effects of their work are, and what relations between them and their work are; at the same time, this way of transport helps them to understand interactive relations of their occupation between this generation and coming generations.

If we need to obtain understanding, we should know how to learn from each other, to listen to each other’s ideas, to create every condition for other to reflect on an issue so as to recognize positive points from every partner to make progress together. At the same time, thanks to reflections, we are able to identify weakness from us as well as our colleagues or partners  so that we are able to overcome these weaknesses from us and possibly help colleagues or partners to cope with the weaknesses in order to make progress and enjoy happiness together.

In short, we transport  understanding to everybody so that they are able to receive and consume what comes from this physical world in a meaningful way.

  1. Substance of love: We transport goods to our partners by substance of love, not only by our professional ability. If we do everything no matter how big or small it is, with all our love, that thing will certainly bring us happiness right when we are doing it.
  2. Substance of sincerity: Sincerity is the noblest value to everybody. Why? Because it ensures the long-lasting relation between us and our partners.

Dear brothers and sisters in the dharma, life itself is a transport, and if our transport is made up of understanding, love and sincerity, our  transport  will show to widen our road to happiness, making contributions to the long-lasting happiness of the community and society. If we practice transporting like that, our happiness in life is not a dream but a reality. We must develop our life in this direction, then every positive significance will come to all of us in life.

I wish you every success in your practice.

Now we'll try the walking meditation. How to do it? Well, first you find a level track about 15 to 20 paces and walk back and forth noting the parts of the steps in the walking. Don't worry, it's all explained in the diagrams that follow, and there's a flow chart with more instruction as well - we look after you very nicely here.

“Who and what am I?” “Why do I exist?” Each of us, during some part of our life, wonders about these questions. While we’re aware of our own being, we don’t actually know how or why we came to be. Our existence poses a great mystery. Our view of who we are and why we’re here, consciously or unconsciously, affect every moment of our lives.

In the year 563B.C. on the border of modern day Nepal and India, a son was born to a chieftain of the Sakya clan. His name was Siddhartha Gotama and at the age of thirty-five, he attained, after six years of struggle and through his own insight, full enlightenment or Buddhahood. The term 'Buddha' is not a name of a god or an incarnation of a god, despite later Hindu claims to the contrary, but is a title for one who has realised through good conduct, mental cultivation, and wisdom the cause of life's vicissitudes and the way to overcome them. Buddhism is perhaps. unique amongst the world's religions in that it does not place reliance for salvation on some external power, such as a god or even a Buddha, but places the responsibility for life's frustrations squarely on the individual. Venerable Pannyavaro is an Australian Buddhist monk who has devoted his life to the meditational aspects of the Buddha's teachings. During his meditation training, he practiced under several meditation masters in Sri Lanka and Burma, including Venerable Sayadaw U Janaka of Chanmyay Meditation Centre, Rangoon, who is the foremost disciple of the renowned Burmese meditation master, the late Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw. Pannyavaro was involved in the beginnings of a number of the very early Buddhist communities in Australia. He later went to Thailand and received higher ordination at Wat Borvornivet in Bangkok under Venerable Phra Nyanasamvarva, the Sangha Raja of Thailand. Since 1974, he has from time to time studied and practised Vipassana meditation in most of the major Theravada Buddhist countries, including long periods of intensive practise with teachers at the Mahasi Sayadaw centres in Burma.
