TRANSPORTING THE SOUL

(Dharma Talk of  Most Venerable Thich Thai Hoa at Kerry Company, Cebu – the Philippines)

Namo  Sakya Muni Buddha,

Dear Mr. Norway, Director of  the company and the staff of Kerry Company at Cebu city, the Philippines,

Today is January 22, 2017, we the Vietnamese Buddhist delegation have pleasure to be invited to your company office so as to pray for peace and happiness for the whole company. On this occasion, I would like to share with you steps of mindfulness that bring peace and happiness for all of us at this moment. Before practicing this, please pay attention to the following points:

  1. When we start walking in mindfulness, our heel touches ground first, and we are aware of embracing the whole foot. When we lift up our feet we realize clearly that we are lifting up our foot. When we place our feet down, we realize very clearly that we are placing it down.
  2. When we walk, we are fully aware of every step we lift up or place down, and we only focus our mind on this, and only on this.
  3. We put the thumb of our left and right hands into the palm of the hands and the remaining four fingers fold up around the thumbs, neither too tight nor too loose. Thanks to this, we can concentrate our mind and thought more on each step we walk.

Please practice walking with us now.

After finishing the steps of mindfulness, we would like to share with you some points necessary for the transport of goods in your company, which are as follows:

  1. Substance of wisdom: Our company is the company of transporting goods from this place to another, from this country to another.  We do not only transport physical goods, but we also transport our understanding to people of different social backgrounds and to all of our partners, so that this way of transport enables them to understand who they are, what effects of their work are, and what relations between them and their work are; at the same time, this way of transport helps them to understand interactive relations of their occupation between this generation and coming generations.

If we need to obtain understanding, we should know how to learn from each other, to listen to each other’s ideas, to create every condition for other to reflect on an issue so as to recognize positive points from every partner to make progress together. At the same time, thanks to reflections, we are able to identify weakness from us as well as our colleagues or partners  so that we are able to overcome these weaknesses from us and possibly help colleagues or partners to cope with the weaknesses in order to make progress and enjoy happiness together.

In short, we transport  understanding to everybody so that they are able to receive and consume what comes from this physical world in a meaningful way.

  1. Substance of love: We transport goods to our partners by substance of love, not only by our professional ability. If we do everything no matter how big or small it is, with all our love, that thing will certainly bring us happiness right when we are doing it.
  2. Substance of sincerity: Sincerity is the noblest value to everybody. Why? Because it ensures the long-lasting relation between us and our partners.

Dear brothers and sisters in the dharma, life itself is a transport, and if our transport is made up of understanding, love and sincerity, our  transport  will show to widen our road to happiness, making contributions to the long-lasting happiness of the community and society. If we practice transporting like that, our happiness in life is not a dream but a reality. We must develop our life in this direction, then every positive significance will come to all of us in life.

I wish you every success in your practice.

Wake Up – Young Adults for a Healthy and Compassionate Society, is a world-wide network of young people practicing the living art of mindfulness. We share a determination to live in an awakened way, taking a 21st Century version of the 5 Mindfulness Trainings as our path and guiding light. The Wake Up network has grown out of Plum Village meditation center in SW France, under the guidance of Venerable Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Plum Village has been offering retreats to young people for over two decades, and the Wake Up movement was formally launched in Summer 2008.

The first two steps in the process of becoming a lay disciple of the Buddha are the going for refuge (sarana gamana) and the undertaking of the five precepts (pañca-sila samadana). By the former step a person makes the commitment to accept the Triple Gem — the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha — as the guiding ideals of his life, by the latter he expresses his determination to bring his actions into harmony with these ideals through right conduct. The following two tracts were written for the purpose of giving a clear and concise explanation of these two steps. Though they are intended principally for those who have newly embraced the Buddha's teaching they will probably be found useful as well by long-term traditional Buddhists wanting to understand the meaning of practices with which they are already familiar and also by those who want to know what becoming a Buddhist involves.

As a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, working as a Buddhist chaplain at several of Melbourne's hospitals and as well as Melbourne assessment prison, I have witnessed many personal tragedies faced by the living and of course the very process of dying and that of death and many of these poor people faced their death with fear, with misery and pain before departing this world. With the images of all these in my mind, on this occasion, I wish to share my view from the perspective of a Buddhist and we hope that people would feel far more relaxed in facing this inevitable end since it is really not the end of life, according to our belief.

Dan Stevenson is neither a Buddhist nor a follower of any organized religion. The 11th Avenue resident in Oakland's Eastlake neighborhood was simply feeling hopeful in 2009 when he went to an Ace hardware store, purchased a 2-foot-high stone Buddha and installed it on a median strip in a residential area at 11th Avenue and 19th Street. He hoped that just maybe his small gesture would bring tranquillity to a neighborhood marred by crime: dumping, graffiti, drug dealing, prostitution, robberies, aggravated assault and burglaries.

Every man must have a religion especially one which appeals to the intellectual mind. A man failing to observe religious principles becomes a danger to society. While there is no doubt that scientists and psychologists have widened our intellectual horizon, they have not been able to tell us our purpose in life, something a proper religion can do.

Every student of Buddhism must be interested in a coorect notion of Nirvana, the goal of this religious effort.Naturally this has puzzled many serious minds.Sir Edwin Arnold,in his preface to "The Light of Asia" expresses the "firm conviction that a third of mankind would never have been brought to believe in blank abstractions,or in Nothingness as the issue and the crown of Being." Yet what is it?
