TRANSPORTING THE SOUL

(Dharma Talk of  Most Venerable Thich Thai Hoa at Kerry Company, Cebu – the Philippines)

Namo  Sakya Muni Buddha,

Dear Mr. Norway, Director of  the company and the staff of Kerry Company at Cebu city, the Philippines,

Today is January 22, 2017, we the Vietnamese Buddhist delegation have pleasure to be invited to your company office so as to pray for peace and happiness for the whole company. On this occasion, I would like to share with you steps of mindfulness that bring peace and happiness for all of us at this moment. Before practicing this, please pay attention to the following points:

  1. When we start walking in mindfulness, our heel touches ground first, and we are aware of embracing the whole foot. When we lift up our feet we realize clearly that we are lifting up our foot. When we place our feet down, we realize very clearly that we are placing it down.
  2. When we walk, we are fully aware of every step we lift up or place down, and we only focus our mind on this, and only on this.
  3. We put the thumb of our left and right hands into the palm of the hands and the remaining four fingers fold up around the thumbs, neither too tight nor too loose. Thanks to this, we can concentrate our mind and thought more on each step we walk.

Please practice walking with us now.

After finishing the steps of mindfulness, we would like to share with you some points necessary for the transport of goods in your company, which are as follows:

  1. Substance of wisdom: Our company is the company of transporting goods from this place to another, from this country to another.  We do not only transport physical goods, but we also transport our understanding to people of different social backgrounds and to all of our partners, so that this way of transport enables them to understand who they are, what effects of their work are, and what relations between them and their work are; at the same time, this way of transport helps them to understand interactive relations of their occupation between this generation and coming generations.

If we need to obtain understanding, we should know how to learn from each other, to listen to each other’s ideas, to create every condition for other to reflect on an issue so as to recognize positive points from every partner to make progress together. At the same time, thanks to reflections, we are able to identify weakness from us as well as our colleagues or partners  so that we are able to overcome these weaknesses from us and possibly help colleagues or partners to cope with the weaknesses in order to make progress and enjoy happiness together.

In short, we transport  understanding to everybody so that they are able to receive and consume what comes from this physical world in a meaningful way.

  1. Substance of love: We transport goods to our partners by substance of love, not only by our professional ability. If we do everything no matter how big or small it is, with all our love, that thing will certainly bring us happiness right when we are doing it.
  2. Substance of sincerity: Sincerity is the noblest value to everybody. Why? Because it ensures the long-lasting relation between us and our partners.

Dear brothers and sisters in the dharma, life itself is a transport, and if our transport is made up of understanding, love and sincerity, our  transport  will show to widen our road to happiness, making contributions to the long-lasting happiness of the community and society. If we practice transporting like that, our happiness in life is not a dream but a reality. We must develop our life in this direction, then every positive significance will come to all of us in life.

I wish you every success in your practice.

This script was written and edited by: John D. Hughes, Arrisha Burling, Frank Carter, Leanne Eames, Jocelyn Hughes, Lisa Nelson, Julie O’Donnell, Nick Prescott, Pennie White and Lenore Hamilton. Consider a water tank as a model of understanding. When the water in the tank gets too low, you get sick and eventually die. For you to stay alive, the tank must be consistently replenished with water.

When we do walking meditation, the point is not to get somewhere, but rather to practice, using walking as the object of our attention. Even when we do have to get somewhere and must drive to do so, there is an opportunity for practice. Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Zen master and poet, has written a number of gathas, or brief verses, for enhancing our mindfulness during everyday activities, even driving a car.

The word Buddhism is derived from Buddha, meaning the Enlightened One or the Awakened One. Buddha is not a proper name, but a generic term or appellative, referring to a founder of a religion, one who has attained supreme enlightenment and who is regarded as superior to all other beings, human or divine, by virtue of his knowledge of the Truth (Dhamma).

“When we take refuge in the Buddha, we mean the qualities of the Buddha that are inherent within us. We are taking refuge in our own intrinsic enlightenment.” Many people these days are reading books about Buddhism, practicing Buddhist meditation, and applying Buddhist principles in their work and personal lives.

We will illustrate the priorities of a Buddha Dhamma practitioner in contrast to the norms of the four common forms of Australian culture towards family life. There is no pure one culture but rather high-bred mixtures in a range from total denial of any family responsibility or obligation to obsessive clinging to the family unit as the one and only refuge that matters.

This short essay is intended to give a brief introduction to Buddhism. It will discuss the way Buddhists perceive the world, the four main teachings of the Buddha, the Buddhist view of the self, the relationship between this self and the various ways in which it responds to the world, the Buddhist path and the final goal.

Ideally, education is the principal tool of human growth, essential for transforming the unlettered child into a mature and responsible adult. Yet everywhere today, both in the developed world and the developing world, we can see that formal education is in serious trouble. Classroom instruction has become so routinized and pat that children often consider school an exercise in patience rather than an adventure in learning.

SIT COMFORTABLY ERECT, without leaning forward or backward, left or right. Close your eyes and think thoughts of good will. Thoughts of good will go first to yourself, because if you can't think good will for yourself—if you can't feel a sincere desire for your own happiness—there's no way you can truly wish for the happiness of others.
