A yellow-colored Buddhist temple adorned with flags and golden dragons on its pointed roofs in a quiet town outside Tokyo presents a stark contrast to the typically somber-looking Buddhist places of worship usually found in rural Japan.
But the steady stream of out-of-town weekend visitors and their nationality also set it apart, for the temple was built by and serves members of the large Vietnamese community in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Buddhism was introduced to the U.S.A. by the Asian immigrants in the 19th century.
There is no reliable data on the number of Buddhists in the United States but today it
is estimated to be a few millions. 1.25% of the total U.S. population is identified as
Buddhist followers. Prof.Dana Eck of the Harvard University talks about the presence
of three types of Buddhists such as , Buddhists, Nightstand Buddhists and Strongly
influenced Buddhists and they amount to be around thirty millions. Thus Buddhism of
all traditions becomes the third largest religion in the U.S., just behind Christianity
and Judaism. In 2006, there was a census showing 6-8 million Buddhists in the USA.
Since then, there hasn't been another serious census taken. It is, therefore, very
difficult to count the immigrant-group figures but, without any doubt, the immigrant-

Our temple preserves the Buddha Dhamma. The Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey)Ltd. has been teaching meditation
free of charge, for all who request it. Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. Members have generated
strong community involvement through public and educational addresses, liasion with and help to, Buddhist
and ethnic groups and participation in community based Arts, Religious and Historical projects.

Although this display has been in place for some months, we have only just been made aware of its' existence. We are not usually outspoken, but this display desecrates the image of Buddha by placing images of these mythical images on him and in doing so, showing no apparent regard or respect for Him.
