The Vesak Friendship Dinner brings our diverse and growing VictorianBuddhist community together for a social evening, vegetarian cuisine  and traditional and cultural performances by groups from across Melbourne.

Vesak Friendship Dinner 2017

Our Friendship Dinner is also the main fundraising event for the 10th annual Victorian United Nations Day of Vesak.

To held in the City of Melbourne on Saturday 27 May.  

It is a unique event providing a rare opportunity for our VictorianBuddhist community to come together as one to Commemorate the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing of the Lord Buddha.

We will be honored to have your Buddhist community join with us for this unique and rare event.
 

In coming weeks we will send you more information on the 2017 UN Day of Vesak program; as well as updating our website and Facebook pages.

Our Victorian Vesak commemoration begins on the morning of 27th of May with:
  • Offering of lunch to the Venerable Monks and Nuns at St Peters Church Hall in East Melbourne.
  • Vesak Procession at 1pm from Parliament Gardens to Collins Street; and at 1.30pm the...
  • UN Day of Vesak Commemoration and Celebration in the Melbourne Town Hall.

A yellow-colored Buddhist temple adorned with flags and golden dragons on its pointed roofs in a quiet town outside Tokyo presents a stark contrast to the typically somber-looking Buddhist places of worship usually found in rural Japan. But the steady stream of out-of-town weekend visitors and their nationality also set it apart, for the temple was built by and serves members of the large Vietnamese community in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Buddhism was introduced to the U.S.A. by the Asian immigrants in the 19th century. There is no reliable data on the number of Buddhists in the United States but today it is estimated to be a few millions. 1.25% of the total U.S. population is identified as Buddhist followers. Prof.Dana Eck of the Harvard University talks about the presence of three types of Buddhists such as , Buddhists, Nightstand Buddhists and Strongly influenced Buddhists and they amount to be around thirty millions. Thus Buddhism of all traditions becomes the third largest religion in the U.S., just behind Christianity and Judaism. In 2006, there was a census showing 6-8 million Buddhists in the USA. Since then, there hasn't been another serious census taken. It is, therefore, very difficult to count the immigrant-group figures but, without any doubt, the immigrant-

Sanghakaya Foundation is a non-profit, faith based organisation devoted solely to the dissemination of the Buddha’s Dhamma and charitable activities that help in the spread of Buddha-Dhamma in India and around the globe. This history of our Centre is to commemorate the opening of our new meditation hall on Founder's Day, 9 September 2007. Why is a history of our Centre important? Our temple preserves the Buddha Dhamma. The Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey)Ltd. has been teaching meditation free of charge, for all who request it. Buddhist Discussion Centre (Upwey) Ltd. The Buddhist community is extremely upset by the inappropriate and disrespectful use of the image of Buddha, The Buddhist community is extremely upset by the inappropriate and disrespectful use of the image of Buddha, in a display at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) entitled the 'Eternity-Buddha in Nirvana, the Dying Gaul, Farnese Hercules, Night, Day, Sartyr and Bacchante, Funerary Genius, Achilles, Persian Soldier Fighting, Dancing Faun, Crouching Aphrodite, Narcisse Couché, Othryades the Spartan Dying, the Fall of Icarus, A River, Milo of Croton'. It can also be seen at: https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/131149/ Although this display has been in place for some months, we have only just been made aware of its' existence. We are not usually outspoken, but this display desecrates the image of Buddha by placing images of these mythical images on him and in doing so, showing no apparent regard or respect for Him.
