Dr Lobsang Sangay is the democratically re-elected leader of the Tibetan people and political successor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Dr Sangay was born in exile in a Tibetan settlement near Darjeeling, India where he attended the local School for Tibetans. He was an excellent student and went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts with Honours and Bachelor of Law from Delhi University, India.

In 1996, as a Fulbright Scholar, he obtained a Master’s degree and in 2004, Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) from Harvard Law School. Dr Sangay is the first Tibetan ever to receive this degree. His dissertation, Democracy in Distress: Is Exile Polity a Remedy? A Case Study of Tibet’s Government-in-exile was awarded the Yong K. Kim 95 Prize.

Dr. Sangay is an expert on International Human Rights Law, Democratic Constitutionalism, and Conflict Resolution. He has spoken in many seminars around the world. He organised seven major conferences among Chinese, Tibetan, Indian and Western scholars including two unprecedented meetings between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Chinese scholars at Harvard University.

In 2007, he was selected as one of the twenty-four Young Leaders of Asia by the Asia Society and a delegate to the World Justice Forum in Vienna, Austria, where top legal experts and judges from around the world congregated.

In 2011, during Dr. Sangay’s swearing-in ceremony, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said, “When I was young, an elderly regent Takdrag Rinpoche handed over Sikyong responsibilities to me, and today I am handing over the responsibilities to young Sikyong Lobsang Sangay. In doing this I have fulfilled my long–cherished goal.”

Dr Sangay will give a talk on Tibet in the 21st Century: Political, Environmental, Cultural and Economic Challenges at this fundraising dinner.

The evening will include delicious Tibetan food, prepared by Topchen and his family of Wild Yak Restaurant plus a variety of Traditional Tibetan musicians and dancers including Melbourne’s Tenzing Yeshe and Brisbane's Tenzin Choegyal along with Traditional dancers from Tibetan Community in Melbourne.

Dalai Lama says he could be reincarnated in India, but Beijing says rebirth must follow Chinese rules, The Dalai Lama has warned there could be two reincarnations of Tibetan Buddhism's highest spiritual leader following his death, and that a candidate chosen by communist China was not to be trusted. The comment has prompted Beijing to say the reincarnation "must comply with Chinese laws and regulations". The 14th Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet for India 60 years ago to the day last Sunday disguised as a soldier, said he expected his reincarnated being to be discovered in India this time around.

Dr. Allan Molloy KERRY O'BRIEN: As the spiritual leader of a remote Asian nation, the Dalai Lama certainly casts a long shadow. In just two public events in Australia so far, some 30,000 people have flocked to hear the word of the revered head of the Tibetan Buddhist faith. And while controversy surrounds his role as an activist for Tibet's political future, his advice on how to cope with the pressures of modern life certainly has broad appeal. The advice is given with humility and humour, and if the question's too hard, a candid acknowledgment that he doesn't have an answer for everything. Mick Bunworth reports.

In India in the 6th century BC, Sakyamuni, "a wise man of the Sakya tribe", had been meditating under a tree when, suddenly, he was struck with the comprehension of all things. He became Buddha, meaning the « Illuminated ». His message, based on a pragmatic philosophy, taught how to free oneself from all needs in order to achieve illumination. After the death of the Enlightened One, his disciples – a few monks – began to spread his teachings all over India, from Ceylon to the Himalayan. Fearing man’s penc

He is an Ocean of Wisdom and we are so very fortunate that he has once again made the commitment to travel all the way to Australia and share his inexhaustible compassion and wisdom with us. As His Holiness will be 80 on the 6thJuly 2015, the Ocean of Wisdomvisit will see His Holiness visit only three cities in this great land of Australia – Sydney, Brisbane & Perth - lessening the impact on him and the program of events he is offering.
