Dr Lobsang Sangay is the democratically re-elected leader of the Tibetan people and political successor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Dr Sangay was born in exile in a Tibetan settlement near Darjeeling, India where he attended the local School for Tibetans. He was an excellent student and went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts with Honours and Bachelor of Law from Delhi University, India.

In 1996, as a Fulbright Scholar, he obtained a Master’s degree and in 2004, Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) from Harvard Law School. Dr Sangay is the first Tibetan ever to receive this degree. His dissertation, Democracy in Distress: Is Exile Polity a Remedy? A Case Study of Tibet’s Government-in-exile was awarded the Yong K. Kim 95 Prize.

Dr. Sangay is an expert on International Human Rights Law, Democratic Constitutionalism, and Conflict Resolution. He has spoken in many seminars around the world. He organised seven major conferences among Chinese, Tibetan, Indian and Western scholars including two unprecedented meetings between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Chinese scholars at Harvard University.

In 2007, he was selected as one of the twenty-four Young Leaders of Asia by the Asia Society and a delegate to the World Justice Forum in Vienna, Austria, where top legal experts and judges from around the world congregated.

In 2011, during Dr. Sangay’s swearing-in ceremony, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said, “When I was young, an elderly regent Takdrag Rinpoche handed over Sikyong responsibilities to me, and today I am handing over the responsibilities to young Sikyong Lobsang Sangay. In doing this I have fulfilled my long–cherished goal.”

Dr Sangay will give a talk on Tibet in the 21st Century: Political, Environmental, Cultural and Economic Challenges at this fundraising dinner.

The evening will include delicious Tibetan food, prepared by Topchen and his family of Wild Yak Restaurant plus a variety of Traditional Tibetan musicians and dancers including Melbourne’s Tenzing Yeshe and Brisbane's Tenzin Choegyal along with Traditional dancers from Tibetan Community in Melbourne.
