VESAK MESSAGE 2650

Namo Sakya Muni Buddha

Dear Maha Sangha,

Dear respected Buddhist devotees and friends,

Seven golden lotus blossoms rise to cradle the sacred steps,

Welcoming the Bodhisattva’s descent into the world.
In Lumbinī Garden, the Udumbara flower suddenly blooms,
As countless hearts rejoice in harmonious celebration.

Each year, as the full moon of the fourth lunar month returns, Buddhists across the five continents settle into a serene and joyful mindfulness to commemorate the birth of our Compassionate Father, Sakyamuni Buddha—the Enlightened One who revealed the path of liberation to humanity.

The appearance of the Buddha in this world is not only a sacred milestone in spiritual history, but also an eternal light illuminating the suffering and ignorance of human existence. More than twenty-six centuries have passed, yet His teachings remain ever relevant, like a refreshing stream nourishing the soul, guiding humanity back to mindfulness, cultivating compassion, and living a life of awakening.

This year’s Vesak comes at a time when our modern world continues to face instability and uncertainty. Conflicts and wars, such as those in the Middle East, tensions between the United States and Iran, as well as the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, remain unresolved. In such circumstances, the Buddhist values of compassion, wisdom, and non-violence become ever more essential and urgent. They form the foundation for inner peace, harmonious living, and the collective aspiration toward a world of understanding, love, and peace.

In harmony with the joyful spirit of Buddhists around the world, Quang Duc Monastery will solemnly celebrate the 2650th Vesak Celebration and the Outdoor Jade Buddha Enshrinement Ceremony at 11:00 AM on Sunday, May 31, 2026 (15th day of the 4th lunar month, Year of the Fire Horse).

Quang Duc Monastery respectfully invites all Buddhist devotees, families, and friends to joyfully attend, offer sincere incense, commemorate the Buddha’s boundless compassion, and pray for world peace and the well-being of all beings.

On behalf of Quang Duc Monastery, we sincerely wish all benefactors, supporters, and Buddhist devotees, together with your families, to be blessed with peace and happiness under the radiant light of the Buddha.

Respectfully,
On behalf of Quang Duc Monastery
Founder: Most Venerable Thich Thong Man
Abbot: Senior Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang

The Catering Unit of Minh Quang Retreat in Sydney, Australia has offered good services in a very solemn and deliciated manner and its very first meal reminded me of the nice smell of the Bowl of Rice of Fragrance in the old times.

Being a so-called Westerner in this life, I'm often asked the question, "What are the main reasons you have chosen to practise Buddhism?". In answering this type of question, I normally give varying answers of varying lengths depending on who is asking and for what reason they are asking the question.

Smartphone Overuse, Youth Suicide and Buddhism as a Healing Source, Youth suicide is disturbingly rising. Ashley Welch, in her article “What’s behind the rise in youth suicides?” (2017), gave some insights into the trend. The author mentioned potential causes for this trauma and notably pointed to “the correlation between the rising popularity of smartphones and increased rates of suicide and depression among young people” (para. 17). Although Welch did not offer a clear reason for the correlation, this point raises an awareness of an irony. We, as readers, may wonder, “How can such a wonderful entertaining device cause that terrible thing?” In this paper, I will discuss the roots of this pain, and then suggest Buddhism as a healing source.

Why Aren't We Teaching You Mindfulness? AnneMarie Rossi, Founder and CEO of BeMindful Harvard conducted a research study and they tracked more than 1,000 people from birth until age 32 looking for what made someone successful. What common characteristic or trait was seen in a successful individual? It wasn't their race, what language they spoke, what neighborhood they grow up in, or how much money their parents had. It wasn't how well they did on standardized tests or even their IQ. It was self-control; those who were successful, who had good careers, financial stability, loving relationships, and physical health. Those who were successful, were the ones who could focus, pay attention, and regulate their emotions.
