“NOW”

By Ven. Shih Jingang

No past, no present, no future.  All created things arise and pass away.  All names and labels dissolve.  You can observe this in meditation practice and, in experiencing impermanence in life and so-called death.

At the conclusion of the Diamond Sutra, it is said that, this is how we should view our conditioned existence: as a star at dawn, a bubble in a stream, a drop of dew, a flash of lightning in a summer cloud, a flickering lamp, a phantom and a dream.

I had the privilege of knowing a woman who had so completely immersed herself in the Buddha’s teachings, that, by the time of her passing from this life she embodied the Dharma. What follows is a prayer of dedication to her, the Three Jewels and to all sentient beings:

Now is the time of awakening to this precious moment.

“I take refuge in the Awakened One.”

Now is the time of realising, that,

I am the Light itself, the Dharma is the light.

“I take refuge in the Dharma of the Awakened One.”

Now is the time of Compassion for all suffering beings.

“I take refuge in the Sangha of the Awakened One.”

May all beings experience the unconditional embrace of

Boundless Compassion.

May the radiant light which emanates from its heart

lead all to blissful freedom.

May all sentient beings be liberated from suffering.

Namo Amitabha!

The Buddha’s ethical teachings, these essential points of the eightfold path aim at promoting as well as perfecting the three heads of Buddhist training and discipline, namely (a) Ethical Conduct (b) Mental Discipline and (c) Wisdom. According to the capacity of each individual harmoniously cultivated, these points are all linked together and each helps the cultivation of the others.

Buddhism is not a religion for men just to follow but to learn, to understand, to practise, to gain experience. When men come to know the Buddha’s teaching and perhaps practise it to some extent, sometimes they wish to make the Dhamma their direction in life or their guide through life. At that time, their thoughts turn to become a Buddhist.

The Catering Unit of Minh Quang Retreat in Sydney, Australia has offered good services in a very solemn and deliciated manner and its very first meal reminded me of the nice smell of the Bowl of Rice of Fragrance in the old times.

Mindfulness LLC, Mira Loma High School, ILC, SJTA, SJUSD, California Teachers Association, USA. W. Edward Bureau, Ph.D., Associate Clinical Professor (Retired), Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA Residence in Cochranville, PA, USA Introduction Sustainable peace anchors itself in mindfulness of the present, the people, and the microcosms in which we exist. Rather than existing as a static state, the peace is organic and dynamic, flowing itself around the vagaries of “unpeacefulness.” Thus, being a mindful leader begins with the practice of the Five Mindfulness Trainings (Five Precepts) and the N
