Since the day the Buddha Shakyamuni attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree at Gaya, India, more than 2,660 years of history have passed. The radiant light of His compassion and wisdom has inspired countless followers—from Asia to Europe, from Europe to America, Australia, and even to Africa. This enduring influence demonstrates that the Dharma realized by the Buddha under the Bodhi Tree remains universally relevant—adaptable to all peoples, all times, and all places on this Earth.

Kunala was born in 263 BC[1] as Dharmavivardhana to Mauryan Emperor Ashoka and his third wife Padmavati. It is said that his eyes were as beautiful as those of Kunala bird that lives in the Himalayas and in order to make comparison a Kunala bird was brought from the Himalaya to Emperor Ashoka’s court. After finding that his son’s eyes were exact match of those of the bird, Ashoka named his son Kunala.[2] While growing up the prince attained proficiency in many arts especially music. On the attainment of youth, Kunala was married to a princess named Kanchanamala.

Myanmar is a Theravada [1] Buddhist country with at least 80% of its population being born Buddhists. The other form of Buddhism is Mahayana. One of the main differences between Mahayana and Theravada is that in the former, the Buddha of the future Meitrya plays a significant role and not in the latter, which focuses on the teachings of Gautama Buddha.

In September 2010, I decided to go on a pilgrimage in India with a group of devotees from the Van-Hanh Pagoda in Nantes. It took me two months to get everything I needed: airplane tickets, passport and visas. International law requires that your passport must be valid at least 3 months after leaving the country you are visiting. I was very happy waiting for the day of departure.
