Lesson 9 – The Sangha

Lecon 9Le Sangha

The Buddha travelled all over the land to explain his teachings and educate the people. Soon, more and more people followed Buddha’s teachings, and many people travelled with him and became his disciples. Gradually, he had a large community of followers.

Those of Buddha’s disciples who became monks lived together in the community in an atmosphere of tolerance and complete harmony. They studied Buddha’s teachings and passed them on to others, so that everyone could learn the truth. They worked hard to help others, and were always kind, modest and sincere.

Moreover, the upright thinking, honest actions and perfect behaviors of the monks earned them the respect of one and all. Everyone admired and trusted the community of monks, which was called the Sangha.

This explains why the Buddhist Sangha has increased in such great numbers today, and why the order of monks has won the high and respected title of the “Harmonious Community.”
