Feb 16^th, 1987

The arrival of Venerable Thich Tam Phuong in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, from Pulau Bidong Refugee Camp, Malaysia, by the sponsorship of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation in Australia and New Zealand. He stayed for two weeks in Phuoc Hue Pagoda.

Mar 1^st, 1987

Venerable Thich Tam Phuong was appointed to be an Abbot and served the Buddhists of Quang Ming Temple in Braybrook, Victoria.

Jun 20^th, 1990

Venerable Thich Tam Phuong left Quang Minh Temple for Broadmeadows in Victoria where, by chance, he built Quang Duc Monastery started out with a three bedroom single home located at 30 Bamburgh St.

Nov 15^th, 1990

Venerable Thich Tam Phuong went along with Nhat Hanh Zen Master’s group for pilgrimage to India for the Holy Places.

Dec 20^th, 1990

Venerable Thich Tam Phuong was recognized by Victorian Department of Justice as JP (Justice of Peace) and civil status official member (celebrant), authorized to sign the marriage certificates for fellow Buddhists in Australia.

Feb 1^st, 1991

Venerable Thich Tam Phuong officially became a member of the Chaplain Council (Healthcare Chaplaincy Council of Victoria). He frequently visited and comforted patients and prisoners in hospitals and prisons within the state.

Mar 15^th, 1992

Senior Venerable Thich Quang Ba and Venerable Thich Tam Phuong visited the Vietnamese refugees in the refugee camps in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Malaysia. Both Venerable then left the refugee camps for the Buddhist Temples in Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

Feb 17^th, 1994

Thich Nu Hanh Nguyen became Novice Nun, ordained by Venerable Thich Tam Phuong in the presence of Most Venerable Thich Nhu Hue at Phap Hoa Temple.

Jun 20^th, 1997

Venerable Thich Tam Phuong with local Buddhists found an elementary school in Fawkner, by Melbourne Airport of 20 minutes drive. The area of 8000 square meters, where is for Quang Duc Monastery today.

Nov 20^th, 1997

Quang Duc Monastery held an Inauguration of Seating Buddha and Thank You Ceremony to the Three Gems and the Buddhists near and far, who had supported, devoted to the building, remodelling, regeneration, and decoration to the building project. There were many famous Buddhist Masters cross Australia and overseas participated.

Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang, the Abbot’s young brother, arrived and settled in Melbourne, Australia, under Religious Missionaries program (Minister of Religion).

Jun 15^th, 1998

Quang Duc Monastery launched its Buddhist Youth Family and Vietnamese Language School, named “Truong Viet Ngu Bo De”. The Buddhist youth family was led by Nguyen Dung, while the language school was directed by Vice Principal Thieu Van Duc, Buddhist name Nguyen Tam.

Jul 1^st, 1998

Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang officially became a member of the Chaplain Council (Healthcare Chaplaincy Council of Victoria). He regularly visited and comforted the patients in the hospitals and the inmates in prisons of the state.

Oct 1^st- 4^th, 1998

Nun Hanh Nguyen received a full Bhikku Ordination in ceremony called “Huong Son Code of Conduct Set Forth” held at Phap Bao Temple in Sydney.

Sep 9^th, 1999

The Monastery celebrated an inauguration for opening the Main Gate to the Buddhist Hall after completing the building of Lumbini Garden, Deer Park, and Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara Statue setting.

Mar 7^th, 1999

Deputy Abbot, Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang, attended the Ceremony of Peace for South-East Asia for the second time, held by Moral Re-Armament Centre in Toorak, together with the prayers of more than 100 members and Masters of five countries, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, and Sri Lanka. Mr. Rob Woob proposed the same date for the next Peace Celebration in year 2000.

Apr 2^nd- 4^th, 1999

Three days Winter Retreat was held (from the 2nd thru the 4^thof April) right in the boundary of Quang Duc Monastery with more than 50 Buddhists attended under the leading and presence of Most Venerable Thich Huyen Ton, Senior Venerable Thich Tinh Minh, Dr. Viriyanada Ajahn (Thailand), and Senior Venarable Santhindriya (Sri Lanka). The whole monastery was busy in peace and happiness.

May 15^th, 1999

The day of Vesak. Quang Duc Monastery officially launched an “electronic library”, www.quangduc.com, to universal the doctrine of Buddhism. The web site is to give people the opportunities for learning and practicing the Buddha Teachings to be sublimated the spiritual life. The electronic library continues to expand, currently, contains more than 200,000 articles and books related to Buddhism in text materials/ power points/picture/paintings illustrations. The valuable gem includes Buddhist dictionary, Sutra, Sastra (treatise), discipline in practice and regulations, philosophies management, psychology, logics, analysis stories, poetry, traditions along with illustrations. The Power Points slide shows of the cultures and arts of many countries. The books by famous philosophers and writer could be found here as well. The library also retains all pictures and articles of the historical events, facts, and social works of the Monastery and of other places in the world.

Apr7^th - 13^th, 1999

One week of practicing the Great Compassion Mantra of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara opened to Buddhists for mindfulness over life. The class was to support the practice of the “giving”, to minimize the creation of evil karma, as well to strengthen the spiritual life itself. The Dharani continuously chanted day and night straight for seven days, from 10 am of the 7^thto 10 am of the 13^thin April 1999.

Abbot Venerable Thich Tam Phuong was selected for the chair of General Manager of Service Department of Buddhist Youth Family; Deputy Abbot Thich Nguyen Tang was appointed Deputy General Secretary of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation in 4-years term (1999-2003) right under Most Venerable Thich Nhu Hue, a Chairman of the Executive Office. It was the first congress to select the committee members for the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Australia and New Zealand (GHPGVNTNHN), held at Phap Bao Temple under the lead and presence of Most Venerable Thich Bao Lac.

Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong and the Monastery’s Sangha attended the 1^stWinter Retreatorganised by the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Australia - New Zealand, held at Phap Hoa Pagoda, South Australia.

Dec 10^th, 2000

The ceremony of placing the first stone for building the Main Buddhist Hall for Quang Duc Monastery. It was on the full moon day of November, in the Year of Dragon. Venerable Thich Nhat Tan, Director of Finance Department of GHPGVNHN Australia & New Zealand, Abbot of Phap Quang Temple, gave presentation at 10:30am.

The ceremony was conducted in solemn to pray peace to beings.

- From government and guests, there were the presence of Mr. Philip Ruddock, Federal Attorney-General of Immigration, TNS Nguyen Sang, Ms. Kaye Darveniza, representing Premier Steve Brake, Mrs. Stella Kariofyllidis, Mayor of City of Moreland, Mike Zafiropoulos, Manager of SBS Radio in Melbourne, Dr. Lam Nhu Tang, Deputy Director Department of Education Culture GHPGVNTNHN- Australia & New Zealand; Mr.Trung Doan, Chairman of the Freedom Vietnamese Community in Australia, Mr. Quoc Viet, Head of the Vietnamese language, Mr. Long Quan, Editor of Human Rights Weekly Newspaper, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Chung, construction contractors, Nguyen Kien Thanh, architect who designed the building plan, Mr. and Mrs. David Nowak, engineers who were responsible for the construction of Quang Duc Monastery, SBS Radio Station in Melbourne, and nearly 1,000 community members in and out of Victoria.

Following the Flag Ceremony was the Opening Speech giving by Venerable Thich Tam Phuong, the Abbot. He expressed his great desire, and the determination to build Quang Duc Monastery, the place could be used as a Buddhist cultural centre and the training school to the Vietnamese Buddhist community in Australia. One section in his speech wrote: "... Although being’s life is impermanent and short, the responsibility of the Sangha is above to reach the Pure Land and Enlightenment, below to save and comfort beings. As the Buddhists, we all put the Three Gems to the most holy and the good deeds to the highest respect, in the absolute among the changes, for eternity. In that spirit, we call you, the fellow Buddhists, near and far, for your supports and contributions to the building project of the Great Kindness Stupa for its completion.”

The 1^stretreat organised by the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Australia - New Zealand was held at Epping, Scout Camp Centre, New South Wales. The event was coordinated by Senior Venerable Thich Phuoc Nhon with 20 Sangha members plus 150 Buddhists attended the retreat; Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang led 7 lay Buddhists from Quang Duc Monastery. After the opening ceremony, the event the organiser was informed by the local police to evacuate the camp site due the risk of surrounding bushfire. The Most Venerable Thich Bao Lac was kindly enough to offer the organiser to relocate the event to be held at Phap Bao Pagoda within short notice.

Feb 4^th, 2001

The celebration of groundbreaking to build the Main Hall for the Monastery with the presence of Most Venerable Thich Huyen Ton. The floor plan was designed by architect Nguyen Kien Thanh, and managed by David Nowak, the engineer who was responsible for the whole building project. The cost was estimated around 1.2 million AUD. It definitely needs the supports from the Buddhists in the world.

June 15^th, 2001

Vice-Abbot Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang received the Australian Centenary Medal from Federal Government on the occasion of One Hundred Years (1901-2001) Founded the National Federation of Australia. Reason for this honour was Vice-Abbot had practically contributed to the social work of helping prisoners, patients in the role of Buddhist clergy chaplain in Victoria.

Quang Duc Monastery was together with Moreland Council for the Census program to have the most accuracy on the religious report of the Vietnamese in Australia. It gave the instructions to the Buddhists to help answer question 19 of the “Australian Bureau of Statistics Household Form”, that was, “what is the person's religion?" the Buddhist just needs to put a “-” in the box in front of the “Buddhist” word. The reminder to the family who has the total count of members of more than 6 needed to contact the National Census (ABS) at 137 219 for additional forms to fill. It was a privilege of the Buddhists. Be aware, the population of the Buddhists in Australia was recorded about 200,000 (two hundred thousands) within the total of 600 million (six hundred million) of the whole world (all together). We believe that the “600 million” is not a correct number in real. Because the report from the world Bureau of Statistics was counting on the response of who reported of her/his religion. However, there had been many Buddhists did not participate actively in the census program. In order to bring the count closer of the actual number, we call the Buddhists in Australia to aggressively and correctly participate into the Census program. Quang Duc’s Sangha attended the First Yearly Retreat opened by the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation and organized at Phap Hoa Temple in South Australia.

Aug 19^th, 2001

Quang Duc Monastery held Kathina Ceremony to offer the uniforms to the Masters organized right after the Yearly Retreat. The uniform offerings extended to more than 30 Masters from many ethnic groups including Vietnam, Thai, Lao, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia. It was on Sunday, there were approximately 100 Buddhists participated.

Aug 19^th, 2001

Quang Duc Monastery hosted the reception called Roses Offerings to Mothers at Happy Reception Restaurant in Ascot Vale for the first time. Buddhist Long Quang Ho, the editor of Weekly Human Rights News Paper was the manager of the program. He delightfully extended the thanks to the fellow Buddhists and to the organizations those supported and participated in the party. Abbot Thich Tam Phuong gave speech about the meaning of Roses offering to Mothers: “Forever we could not hope to repay the love and the labour to the Mothers, because the Mothers’ Love to the children is not a loan but the Giving. The party tonight is for the children to honour the Mothers to express their gratitude.” The program included many new features operated in modern Arts and opera music by the contribution of Son Ca singer from the United States and the famous singers of Sydney and Melbourne such as Bao Khanh, Le Nghiem, Linh Do, Tuan Kiet especially with the presence of the opera actors and actresses Ngoc Lan, Diep Ngoc, Quang Chau, Minh Huong, Minh Ky, Nguyen Kha, and Tuan Anh Dung. There were 25 Mothers who were older than 70 years of age being honour.

Quang Duc Monastery held a memorial service in honour Most Venerable Thich Thien Sieu, the Buddhist Master who passed away at 4 pm on the 30^thof October 2001 At Tu Dam Temple in Hue Province in Vietnam, at his 81 years of life with 53 years of dedication to Buddhism.

Quang Duc Monastery held a memorial service in honour Most Venerable Thich Duc Nhuan, who was Buddhist Master, held Chief Secretary of the Office of the Buddhist Supreme Institution, passed away at 5:07 pm, Monday Jan 21^st, 2002 (September, the Year of Snake, Tan Ty), at age of 79 with 59 years of dedication to Buddhism, at Giac Minh Temple in Saigon City.

The arrival of Venerable Thich Thong Tin from Linh Son Phap Bao Dharma Centre of Nha Trang City in Vietnam to help Quang Duc construction building.

Apr 7^th, 2002

One day of practicing the mindfulness, the method of Plum Village, conducted directly by the Masters who came from Plum Village, France. There were Masters Chan Phap Dang, Chan Phap Ung, Chan Phap Co, Trung Chinh, Chan Thoai Nghiem, Thuan Tien who directly conducted the workshops. The students exercised the method of observing breaths “in and out” to tie the thoughts for not to travel far in order to improve the mind concentration. The class started at 10 am and ended at 5 pm. There were about 70 Buddhists participated on this Sunday.

Both Masters and Nun Hanh Nguyen together with the Buddhists attended the Yearly Retreat 2 (Winter Retreat) at Phap Bao Temple in Sydney.

Oct 20^th, 2002

500 fellow Buddhists arrived for the ceremony praying peace to the families of victims who were killed by bomb explosion in Bali. A full service lunch provided for fundraiser to the building project with the presence of Most Venerable Thich Huyen Ton for observing. The incident occurred in Saturday night, Oct 12^th, 2002 by 11 pm, outside of Sari Club in Bali of Indonesia, the bomb explosion turned the beautiful island in horror and submerged it in flames. It caused death and missing of hundred of Australian. To express the deep concern to the country, especially, to the families of the victims, the temples under Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Australia - New Zealand took turn of holding services to pray peace to the victims’ families.

Mar 22^nd_- 23^rd, 2002

Vice-Abbot Thich Nguyen Tang represented the world Buddhist to lecture on "Buddhist views about death & rebirth". The seminar was for two days, March 22^ndand 23^rd, 2002, held at RMIT University, about The Process of "Dying, Death and Grief", opened to the religious missionaries, physicians, nurses, psychologists, police officers, social workers, and staffs of the burials. This was a very rare event for the professionals to share the experience and knowledge on all about the "death and after death". The presentations helped reduce the agony of pain or fear before dead, as well maintain the calmness to the relatives and the dying person along with to know what to prepare and control their attitude toward life.

May 18^th-27^th, 2002

Quang Duc Monastery published the translations "Compassion and the Individual", in bilingual, English-Vietnamese, written by the Dalai Lama, translated by Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang in occasion of His Holiness’s visiting Australia. The Dalai Lama, a leader of Tibetan Buddhism visited Australia from 18^thto 27^thof May 2002 for many states, Canberra, NSW, and Victoria. Particularly for Melbourne, he stayed and gave the teachings held at Melbourne Park from the 19^thto 22^nd. The fund collected from selling the publications ($5.00 AUD each) was contributed to Quang Duc building project.

Jan 3^rd- 7^th, 2002

Vice-Abbot Thich Nguyen Tang led 25 Buddhists of Victoria to attend the Yearly Retreat held at Oxford, Wollongong of New South Wales. There were about 200 Buddhists cross the country participating in this seminar.

Mar 1^st, 2003

The Monastery welcomed two members of the Sangha, Venerable Thich Chon Dat and Venerable Thich Nu Thong Huu from Nha Trang, Vietnam under Religious Worker program. The Office of Immigration allows the institution to sponsor members to Australia for help on the construction.

Jan 19^th, 2003

Quang Duc Monastery held commemoration in honour Most Venerable Thich Tri Nghiem, the Buddhist Master who passed away at 2 am on January 13^th, 2003 (December 11^thin Year of the Horse, Nham Ngo), at Hoang Am Truc of Long Son Temple in Nha Trang City, at his 93 years of life with 70 years of dedication to Buddhism.

May 30^th, 2003

The Quang Duc Social Group opened a broadcast service room and a gift shop for raising fund toward to the building project. The items to sell include the singing bells, paintings, Buddha statues, beads for chanting, incense, guest dresses, Buddhist music CD, lotus flower shape lights for altar tables, and souvenirs. The Broadcast room is opened on Sunday and has assigned to two Buddhists to take turns for service, these two Nguyen An and Ngoc Anh are currently on their duties.

Jul 8^th-18^th, 2003

The two Masters and Nun Hanh Nguyen attended the 4^thVassa, conducted by the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation in Australia and New Zealand, at Van Hanh Monastery in Canberra Capital from July 8^th - 18^th. There were 50 members of Sangha and 60 Buddhists cross the country attended.

The Monastery hosted the second banquet for Roses Offering to Parents, right at for Quang Duc’s Ball Room. There were many famous actors participated: Thanh Hang, Mau Don, Thanh Tam and others from Melbourne.

Aug 29^th- 31^st, 2003

The Second Congress held in solemn at Phap Quang Pagoda in Queensland. As result, the committee included Venerable Thich Tam Phuong who was promoted to Senior Venerable and appointed as Commissioner for Dharma Propagation; Vice Abbot Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang was reselected for Deputy General Secretary seat, his second term (2003-2007). Senior Venerable Thich Nhat Tan took the lead of management of the Congress.

Oct 10^th - 13^th, 2003

The Inauguration Ceremony of Quang Duc Monastery for its thirteen years of success in Australia, as well to congratulate Most Venerable Thich Huyen Quang for his highest position, Duc Tang Thong the 4^th(The Supreme Patriarch, 4^th), in the Office of the Buddhist Supreme Institution. There were 134 members of the Sangha and approximately 5,000 Buddhists in and out of Australia participated.

Oct 12^th, 2003

The Monastery conducted a ceremony for 100 Vietnamese to become Australian citizen. The naturalization process was honoured by the Buddhist Sangha in and out of the country, and particularly with the presence of Attorney General of Federal Naturalization Mr. Gary Hardgrave and the Mayor of City of Moreland who came to welcome new citizens and to issue the Certificates of Citizenship. It was on Sunday, at 3 pm, the celebration was in warm and dignified atmosphere.

The Monastery held a commemoration in honour Venerable Thich Nu Tri Hai who passed away in Long Khanh City, when she was on the way back to Saigon after finishing her mission. It was on November 14^that 5pm of Year of the Sheep (December 7^th, 2003), after 33 years of service in 66 years of life. Venerable Thich Nu Tri Hai was the most famous Bhikkunis in the Vietnamese Buddhist Nuns. Her writings and translations have considerably contributed to the Vietnamese Buddhism.

Dec 31^st, 2003 - Jan 4^th, 2004

Venerable Thich Thong Tinh led 20 Buddhists of Quang Duc Monastery to attend the Third Yearly Retreat. The seminar held for 5 days, from Sunday 12/31/2003 thru 04/01/2004 in Oxford, Wollongong, New South Wales.

Jul 6^th - 16^th, 2004

The Monastery served the fifth Vassa as Buddhist tradition, “The Precepts are the Foundation of Buddhism and its existence”. There were more members joined, compared to the previous year that held at Van Hanh Monastery. 62 members of Sangha together with 150 Buddhists. The highlighted point was some Buddhists came from Philadelphia USA (20hrs flight), and some were from up north states of Australia.

Aug 21^st, 2004

Quang Duc Monastery hosted the 3^rdreception of Roses Offering to Parents, at 7 pm Saturday, August 21^th, 2004. The banquet was served at Happy Reception Hall in Melbourne to welcome more than 400 Vietnamese and Australian guests, who came to respect and appreciate their parents regardless of cold and raining evening. Eighteen aged ladies and gentlemen were drawn to represent the parents: Mrs. Ma Ngoc Tai, Buddhist name, Doan Thuy, 91 year olds; Mrs. Phan Huy Quat, Buddhist nam, Nguyen Luan 91 year olds; Mrs. Nguyen Thi Nhan, 87 year olds; Mrs. Ngo Thi Kieu, Buddhist name, Dieu Chanh, 87 year olds; Mrs. To Thi Ngo, 78 year olds; Mrs. Pham thi Doan, Buddhist name, Bach Van, 76 year olds; Mrs. Mai Thi Phien, Buddhist name, Duc Ngoc, 76 year olds; Mrs. Pham Thi Do, Buddhist name, Nguyen Phat, 75 year olds; Mrs. Cu ba Quach thi Kim, Buddhist name, Dieu Ngoc, 73 year olds; Mrs. Le Thi Cap, Buddhist name, Dieu Ngo, 72 year olds; Mrs. Vuong Ngoc Lien, Buddhist name, Ngoc Linh, 75 year olds; Mrs. Tran Thi Xu, Buddhist name, Quang Niem, 71 year olds; Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dao, Buddhist name, Ngoc Hoa; Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xuan Tuyet, Buddhist name, Tho Tinh; Mr. Tran Chi, 79 year olds; Mr. Ha Van Ngu, 75 year olds; Mr. and Mrs. Steve Lowe Nguyen Thien Bao, Nguyen Thien Hanh.

Quang Duc Monastery hosted The 4^thYearly Retreat right at the institution. Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong took the lead of the management for the seminar. There were 30 members of Sangha and 150 Buddhists participated.

Mar 10^th, 2006

Since the start of 2000 to these days, every year early March, Mr Rob Wood of Toorak Social Work Centre, led a group of youth consisted of many different ethnics; Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Fiji, Solomon, New Zealand and Australia, visited Quang Duc Monastery. The purpose of the visit is to give the group the opportunity to enquire about the philosophy of Buddhism. A 10 days course on Life Matters held at Armagh, Toorak, Melbourne, Australia, designed to help the individual to come to terms with oneself and how to deal with sudden change in life, to learn to forgive, as well as recognising the importance of how religion can help one to find a meaningful life. At the end of the course, Mr Rob Wood led the group visiting different religious, such as Buddhist temple, Roman Catholic Church and Muslim Mosque, to give the group an opportunity to be aware of the philosophical background between each religion. Quang Duc Monastery has been chosen by the Social Work Centre to represent Buddhism over the last 10 years.

June 19^th, 2005

The Monastery held a commemoration in honour Most Venerable Thich Dong Minh, The famous Buddhist Master who rested in peace at Long Son Temple in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province, at 6:35 pm on June 17, 2005, after 59 years of contribution to Vietnamese Buddhism. He left at the age of 79.

Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong and Vice-Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang warmly welcome the teachers and students, explained to them the fundamental philosophy of Buddhism, the idea of reincarnation and the significant view of karma from a Buddhist’s perspective, the three gems, meditation practice, chanting Sutra, bell ringing procedure, the different between Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism, the history of Vietnamese Buddhism and its development in Australia, the rules and regulations applied for visitors to the Monastery, the style of dress code for Sangha members.

Held the memorial service in honour Senior Venerable Thich Chon Kien, Surfu of Vice-Abbot Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang. Senior Venerable Thich Chon Kien passed away at Thien Phu Temple in Nha Trang City on Sunday Sep 3rd, 2006 at 6 pm (July 11^thof leap month in the Year of Dog, Binh Tuat). He attended 37 Vassa Retreats in 59 years of life including 49 years of dedication to Buddhism.

The Monastery conducted a pilgrimage to the Buddhist Holy Places in India by Vice-Abbot Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang. It was a dream of thousands of Buddhists for visiting these holy places because it rarely could happen in life. There were 52 Buddhists, those 28 from Melbourne, 6 from Sydney, 1 from Perth, 5 from USA Texas and California. They left for the trip on Nov 7^th, 2006 and returned home after 22 days of pilgrimage. Going along with the Master was Nun Thich Nu Hanh Nguyen and Buddhist An Hau Tony Thach, president of Triumph Tour Travel Services Company.

Vice-Abbot Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang led 50 Buddhists of the Monastery to the 6^thYearly Retreat, hosted by Phap Hoa Temple in Adelaide Hill of South Australia, directed by the Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation. The program included 5 days of training started on Sunday Dec 31^st. Venerable Thich Vien Tri, the Abbot of Phap Hoa took the lead of the management. There were approximately 200 Buddhists participated and more than 30 members of the Sangha came for the teachings. This seminar was considered the busiest and the most crowded one compared to the first five, and was recognized by the Congregation.

The Third Congress was solemnly held at Pho Quang Pagoda in Perch. Senior Thich Phuoc Nhon took the lead of the management of the Congress. As result, for the committee members, Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong was selected for the Commissioner for Social Charity Services Division for his second term and Vice-Abbot Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang still remained in the duty of Deputy General Secretary for 4 years of services from 2007-2011 (his third term).

The Monastery published “Sức mạnh của lòng từ”, the transalations into Vietnamese by Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang, from“The Power of Compassion written” in English by the Dalai Lama the 14^th.The Monastery selected the Vesak month of the 2631th Buddha’s Birthday for the books to be published to pay respect to the Dalai Lama in the occasion of his visiting Australia for the teachings in early June 2007. It was a small gift to him to please his compassion heart extending to beings in the world of violence, suffering, and hatred (www.dalailama.org.au).

Quang Duc Monastery led the pilgrims to China for visiting the four Holy Mountains. The trip included 72 members leaving early in the morning on Sunday and returning home after 19 days, under the lead of Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang and others Sangha members, Most Venerable Thich Bao Lac was to support and observe. Senior Venerable Nun Thich Nu Phuoc Tri, Thich Nu Chon Dao, Venerable Thich Nu Tam Van, Thich Nu Hanh Nguyen, Thich Nu Nhu Chau, and An Hau Tony Thach, director of Triumph Tour Travel Services Company also went along. The Buddhists came from different places; 38 were from Melbourne, 1 from Adelaide, 17 from Perth, 9 from USA, and 2 from Vietnam.

The Monastery served the 7^thYearly Retreat at Campaspe Down, Kyneton Victoria, 45 minutes away from the Melbourne airport, by the direction of the Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Australia - New Zealand. The seminar included 5 days as usual. Abbot Venerable Thich Tam Phuong took the lead the management for the retreat. This year particularly, the number of Buddhists attending the classes was 450 together, that was considered very high compared to the previous years. It was amazing! The result gave a great gift to the Masters, to the committee, and to the managers. Probably, one of the criteria of the success was the location of the facility, in right distance from the crowded cities, brought in convenience and comfort to the members.

The Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Australia - New Zealand together with Quang Duc Monastery held a memorial service to honor Duc Tang Thong, the 4^th (The Supreme Patriarch, 4^th), Most Venerable Thich Huyen Quang, who passed away at Nguyen Thieu Monastery in Binh Dinh Province, VN, on July 5^th, 2008, at 1:15 pm (on June 3^rdin the Year of Rat, Mau Ty). The commemorationwas served at 2 pm at Quang Duc’s Main Hall. Duc Tang Thong the 4^thdied at age of 89 those included 69 years of dedication to the Vietnamese Buddhism.

The Monastery provided the service of Holy Relics exhibitions. There were approximately 2500 Buddhists (Cambodian, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Australian) and guests who came to pay respect. The program for each day was from 5 am to 10 pm. The time slots included the mindfulness practice, Sutra chanting, sitting and walking meditation and Dharma teachings (3 hrs each day). The Buddhists had enough merits to listen to 10 teachings given by Tibetan Lama Rinpoches, the Sri Lankan, the German, Australian, and Vietnamese Masters. The event brought in the warm and earnest atmosphere to add on to their confidence. Specifically, for two weeks of observing the relics of Buddha and Bodhisattva, the Buddhists, again, faithfully and diligently increase their efforts toward their goals. The Holy Relics exhibited at the Monastery were the certain results of the deliverance from who were reached the enlightenment.

The Monastery held the Buddhist pilgrimage to India and Taiwan for the second time led by Vice-Abbot Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang. There were 98 members from Australia, United States, Canada, and Vietnam on the trip. Venerable Nun Thich Tam Van and Thich Dieu Trang from Vietnam were travelled along. Tony An Hau, director of Triumph Tour Travel Company went together to help the Master.

The Monastery held a ceremony to pray peace for victims’ families of fire in Victoria. Following the ceremony, Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong, Director of Social and Charity Division of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Australia – New Zealand, together with the Masters from other temples delivered $100,000 AUD (one hundred thousand Australian dollars) to Strathewen where the fire destroyed the most, 42 dead and 70 houses were down (of the total of 100 units were destroyed). The remained portion, approximately $ 40,000 AUD, was delivered to other regions where also got damage by the fire (the donations came from the Buddhist institutions of all five continents). The terrible fire occurred in early February 2009 in Victoria was the most severe in the history of the Australian. The disaster claimed 210 lives (including the missing, dead, and buried). The damages to properties, houses, and business were figured as high as in billion of AUD. Under these circumstances, the United Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation held prayers for victims. Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong said:‘‘Immediately after the news of this terrible fire, Chief of the Congregation, Most Venerable Thich Nhu Hue sent 2,000 AUD directly to the fund and ordered the Social and Charity Division to begin to relief. In response to the request, we together with other Masters within the Congregation started three consecutive trips, one on Feb 10th, one on 11th, and one on the 12^thdirectly came to the victims’ residences to deliver 18,000 AUD in cash to support. Also, we provided them the general supplies, food (instant noodles) and drinks which was worth approximately 21,000 AUD. The total value of the assistance of the first three trips was 39,000 AUD.”

Two Master and Nun Hanh Nguyen went to the 10^thVassa at Phap Bao Temple in Sydney directed by the Congregation. This Winter Retreat gathered 78 members of the Sangha and 100 lay Buddhists from different states. This particular Vassa, beside the closing ceremony there was the ceremony of promoting the two Venerable, Thich Pho Huong (ordained 1987) and Thich Nguyen Tang (ordained 1988), to Senior Venerable. All Buddhists and members of the Sangha were happy and wishing the Two Masters to continue their success on the long way of cultivation.

Quang Duc Monastery organised three days weekend retreat for 100 local Buddhist members. The program consisted of Dharma teaching ran by Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong, Vice Abbot Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang and Venerable Thich Vien Tinh. The Monastery also organised a day trip visiting a Tibetan temple in Bendigo where Geshe Konchog Rinpoche and Thupten Khedu Rinpoche delivered the Dharma speech to the group. After the speech, the group was invited to join in and fold Tibetan’s Sutra to be placed inside the casted statue “Wheel of Life”. Members of the Monastery group were also given the opportunity to purchase the jade Buddha necklace and the bead chain to help with the fundraising for the building project of the “Great Stupa Compassion” currently directing by Ian and Judy Green.

The 2^ndPilgrimage to China, for 20 days, led by Vice-Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang. 36 members left on Sunday in the morning for the trip. An Hau Tony Thach, director of Triumph Tour, always went along to guide and help the Master for his need. The Buddhists had enough merit to visit the Holy Sites on the four famous mountains: Potalaka Mountain, O-Mei Shan, Chiu-Fa Shan, and Pancasirsha Mountain.Potalaka Mountain is 1000 meters above the sea level, the place where Guan Yin Bodhisattvaused to save victims in the South China Sea of Dinh Hai, Zhejiang Province. Chiu-Fa Shan, in Anhui Province, where Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva built his places for his Dharma teachings. Pancasirsha Mountain in Shanxi Province where people used to see the appearance of Manjusri Bodhisattva. O-Mei Shan, the pick isas high as 3,077 meters above the sea level, inSzechuan Province, where Samantabhadra Bodhisattvaappeared for his teachings and saving beings.

The Monastery held two weeks of exhibitions of Holy Relics and Jade Buddha. The ceremony of welcoming Jade Buddha, carved from the 3000 years old gem block, and opening the Sangha new building was held in solemn. Two weeks of worship was successfully achieved in happiness. The Buddhists came to revere before the Buddha with the full belief and earnest ever. There were Buddhists had never heard of Fawkner area, but when the Jade Buddha arrived in Quang Duc, they oriented their trips to worship Jade Buddha. It was a reward of blessedness of whom with enough merit. The Monsatery welcomed all guests regardless of religion or race. Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong had expressed his emotions in a poem to welcome Jade Buddha: Greatly! Greatly! Buddha is coming to Quang Duc, Buddha’s here to bring along wisdom and peace , Buddha’s here to bring in universe the happiness, Buddha’s here to shine the darkness, to promote the beliefs, Buddha’s here to save beings from suffering and sadness, Buddha’s here for ending hatred, for the wars to stop, Buddha’s here for Joyful-happiness Buds to bloom on Earth Buddha’s here for the Compassion Flowers to smile in peoples’ hearts.

Vice-Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang along with 76 Quang Duc’ Buddhists attended the 9^thYearly Retreat opened for 5 days, in Bringelly, of 35 miles from Bankstown, under the direction of the Congregation. Senior Venerable Thich Tam Minh took the lead of management. The seminar gathered 324 lay Buddhists, in those the members from Quang Duc’s Buddhists participated in the highest count and received the recognition from the committee. The main point was all Buddhists were in their effort to be on time always to the classes for straight five days. They practiced to get up early in the mornings, and to stay late in the evenings for meditation and chanting Suttra. They eagerly questioned in expecting the good answers for their seriously learning the Dharma. The most important point was that the Buddhists noticed the calmness within, Indeed, they have earned the merit. Not everyone could have chance to attend the retreats because they don’t have enough merit for the opportunity to happen. The practice helps people realize the true value of the spiritual life. In our hope, we want to see more members to participate in the coming Yearly Retreats.

The Monastery held a fundraising dinner in self service fashion to help earthquake victims in Haiti, as the direction of the Congregation. The disaster claimed thousands lives and brought millions people in homeless. The moneys collected, 11,000 AUD and delivered to the Red Cross Office in Australia by Vice-Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang, and two Buddhists Huu Luong and Steve Nguyen Thien Bao on Feb 4^th, 2010. Mrs. Jennie Kendrick, on behalf of Red Cross, received the check and expressed her thanks to all members of Quang Duc, in specific, and to the Buddhists of the Congregation, in general, about the sharing the pain and loss of the victims’ families in Haiti. She revealed the amount of 2 million AUD of charity was sending to help Haiti people on the previous day from Red Cross.

The Monastery together with the Congregation held a commemoration to honour Most Venerable Thich Nhat Lien (1923 - 2010) who passed away at Long Tho Temple in Long Khanh Province, VN. Most Venerable Thich Nhat Lien was the assistant of Duc Tang Thong, the 3^rd(The Supreme Patriarch, 3^rd). He used to hold the 2^ndposition, Advisor the Second, in the Office of the Buddhist Supreme Institution.

There were total of 44 buses brought Buddhists from other temples to Quang Duc Monastery. Visiting 10 temples in early January each year is the Buddhist Tradition, called “Pilgrimage to Ten Temples in spring” (spring in lunar calendar). This year, the temples included Hoa Nghiem Pagoda (10 buses), Duoc Su Pagoda (3 buses), Linh Son Temple (3 buses), Phat To Pagoda (2 buses), Lien Tri Temple (2 buses), Minh Quang Monastery (12 buses), Phat Quang Temple (9 buses), Thien Binh Pagoda (2 buses), Bo De Temple (2 buses) came to visit Quang Duc Monastery.

The full moon day of January (Lunar Calendar), the Monastery guided Buddhists (8 buses) to visit 15 temples in return as tradition. The places included Hoa Nghiem Temple, Pagoda of Cambodia, Linh Son Pagoda, Temple of Sri Lanka, Bao Vuong Pagoda, Thien Duc, Quang Minh Temples, Lien Tri Pagoda, Phat Quang Pagoda, Thien Binh, Hue Quang temples, Bo De, Dieu Am, and Phat To Temples.

Quang Duc Monastery organised three days retreat for 150 local Buddhist members during the Easter weekend, starting at 4 pm on Friday 2^ndto 6 pm on Sunday 4^th. The purpose of the retreat was to allow Buddhist followers the opportunity to further enhance their practice of Buddhism through chanting the Sutra. On the last day of the retreat, the Monastery also organise a day trip visiting a Tibetan temple in Bendigo where Geshe Konchog Rinpoche and Thupten Khedu Rinpoche delivered the Dharma speech to the group. Members of the Sangha that coordinated and assisted with the running of retreat program are: Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong, Vice-Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang and Senior Venerable Zanita (Burmese’s monk).

Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Tam Phuong, Senior Venerable Thich Quang Ba, Senior Venerable Thich Nhu Dinh came to Thailand to attend Vesak Days of Vesak 2634 held in Bangkok. Despite Thailand was bloody conflict between political factions for many days before the Vesak, but things were calmed down and stability returned in the Buddha's birthday week. This proves that there is the mystery of a holy person who was born to ease the beings’ hatred and to bring love and compassion to the world. This was the 7^thBuddha's birthday, held by the United Nations from May 23^rdto May 25^th, 2010 with the participation of 1790 members from 70 countries worldwide. The number of participants was much higher than those in previous years that could show that the Buddhist disciples are to carry in their hearts the Buddha’s Teachings and to remember His Birthday always by together discussing and sharing the daily practices. Vice Abbot Senior Venerable Thich Nguyen Tang and John Tavaner (Buddhist’s name Quang Duc Minh) joined with representative of different ethnic and interreligious groups, consisted of many religions: Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Jewish, for a conference organised by the Australian Federal Police (AFP, http://www.afp.gov.au). The purpose of getting together is to discuss and share religion philosophies as well as custom, practices and cultures from different ethnics to assist members of the AFP to aware and understand differences that exist within the Australian multiculturalism society, hence allow them to provide better services. Incompletion, the group also created a mural “Mosaic” with the theme “Tree of Life” to highlight the diversity within the Australian culture. The event was held from 10 am to 2 pm at Harry Atkinson Centre in Coburg.
