Tiểu sử Đức Đệ Nhị Tăng Thống Trưởng Lão HT Thích Giác Nhiên, Trên phương tiện tôn vinh và nhiệm mệnh thực tế, chức vụ TĂNG THỐNG có từ đời Vua Đinh Tiên Hoàng (theo tài liệu; Con người Bồ Tát, tạp chí Hải Triều Âm số 4-5, của Thạch Trung Giả). Sau khi khai đạo cho Vua, Khuông Việt thiền sư đã nghiễm nhiên trở thành vị TĂNG THỐNG đầu tiên của Phật Giáo Việt Nam, do Vua Đinh Tiên Hoàng sắc phong. Năm tháng trải dài trên mười thế kỷ, chức vụ đó, có khi được hoán vị thành hình, sự suy tôn TĂNG THỐNG được bắt đầu phục hồi. Đặc biệt trong lúc này, việc tấn phong không do Triều đình hay Chính quyền mà do đại diện của toàn thể TĂNG NI tín đồ Phật Giáo suy tôn.
