Buddhist Teachings and Their Contribution
to Sustainable Living in Harmony with Nature

In contemporary times, the importance of the natural environment's sustainability for all living beings is undeniable. It becomes a pressing concern if preventive action is not promptly taken. Hence, I strongly support today's conference and hope that government officials, religious leaders, social figures, and the community at large can collaborate to educate and encourage all strata of society to actively preserve harmony with the natural environment, thus paving the way for a better future for us and our descendants.

Buddhism, one of the world's major religions, boasts a rich tradition of teachings that emphasize the interconnectedness of all life forms and the significance of coexisting harmoniously with nature. This essay delves into the tangible contributions of Buddhist teachings, predominantly drawing from Mahayana Buddhist literature, towards fostering a symbiotic relationship between humanity and the environment.

Interconnectedness and Dependent Origination

A fundamental concept in Buddhism is interconnectedness, exemplified in the teaching of dependent origination, found in various sutras, including the "Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra." It asserts that all things are interdependent, arising based on multiple causes and conditions, highlighting the profound interconnection between humans and the natural world. Our actions not only impact ourselves but the entire ecosystem; harming nature ultimately harms us.

Compassion for All Sentient Beings

Another core principle in Buddhism is compassion (karuna), emphasized in texts like "Bodhisattva Way of Life" and the "Lotus Sutra." Compassion extends beyond humans to encompass all sentient beings, encouraging kindness and respect towards all life forms. Cultivating compassion naturally fosters responsibility towards the environment, making us mindful of our actions and their repercussions.

Non-Attachment and Simplicity

Buddhism advocates non-attachment to material possessions and desires, as elucidated in the "Heart Sutra." Realizing emptiness prompts practitioners to eschew excessive consumerism and materialism, reducing environmental degradation. Simplifying our lives and consumption lessens our ecological footprint, promoting harmony with the Earth.

Mindfulness and the Present Moment

Mindfulness, central to Zen Buddhism, enables a profound connection with the natural world, fostering appreciation for its beauty. It heightens awareness of our ecological surroundings, prompting responsible actions for their preservation. True happiness, devoid of excessive consumerism, stems from mindfulness and living in the present moment.

Engaged Buddhism and Environmental Activism

Humanistic Buddhism encourages active participation in addressing social and environmental issues. Thus, this conference serves as a platform for Buddhists and non-Buddhists to collaborate in tackling environmental challenges. Initiatives like environmental awareness campaigns and sustainability projects, inspired by religious moral values, promote a sustainable future through harmonious coexistence.

Conclusion

Buddhist teachings offer a profound framework for understanding our place in the natural world, guiding us towards harmonious living with it. Concepts such as interconnectedness, compassion, non-attachment, mindfulness, and engaged Buddhism contribute to holistic environmental sustainability. By embracing these teachings, we cultivate respect for nature, reduce our ecological impact, and foster a harmonious relationship with the planet, nurturing both its well-being and our spiritual growth.

The 26th January is Australia Day. On this day, citizenship ceremonies have traditionally been held all around Australia as part of the program of events where new Australia citizens feel very happy and proud to become an Australian. Since the day I have set foot on Australian soil and became an Australia citizen, I've discovered that “Our land abounds in nature's gifts, Of beauty, rich and rare”, and very, very proud and identified with the notion of “With courage let us all combine, To advance Australia fair”, especially the Australian values that have been stated on the Affirmation – As an Australian citizen, I affirm my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I uphold and obey

A yellow-colored Buddhist temple adorned with flags and golden dragons on its pointed roofs in a quiet town outside Tokyo presents a stark contrast to the typically somber-looking Buddhist places of worship usually found in rural Japan. But the steady stream of out-of-town weekend visitors and their nationality also set it apart, for the temple was built by and serves members of the large Vietnamese community in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Congratulatory Message on the occasion of the 7th Buddhist Summit Dear Venerables, I am very pleased to know from Ven. Chandaratana in France that the 7th Buddhist Summit will be held in November 2017 in Sri Lanka, one of the leading countries of Theravada Buddhism, for the purpose of exchanging views about the development of Buddhism around the world. I also received the information that the World Buddhist Summit Organization in Japan had undertaken the enormous task to build up a Nalanda Buddhist University in Japan. This is a great act of merit and indeed good news not only for Japanese Buddhists, but also for Buddhists throughout the world. On behalf of the Vietnamese Buddhists in Germany, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your great achievements and wish all participants of the 7th Buddhist Summit a successful conference and fruitful discussion.
